"Design in an oval. An old military officer with a wooden leg describes his campaigns to two cronies. He is seated in a chair (right) in profile to the left wearing regimentals and sword, his wig has a long loosely twisted pigtail queue; his wooden leg (right) projects horizontally from his chair. He holds a map or plan taken from the wall, and is showing it to a stout man sitting on his right, who looks at it through spectacles. The third man standing behind, his left arm on the back of the soldier's chair, looks over their shoulders at the map. At their feet a small dog lies asleep.
