Binding: Date? Italy. Vellum case with title in ink on spine: "Cesare Comment". Gilt, gauffered edges and gold and cream silk endbands. Fragments of a printed service book with musical notation partially visible under pastedowns., Elegant illuminated title page (f. 2v) with the title, written in blue over an erasure, in a circular wreath, green with gold flowers, and framed by narrow gold bands with fillets and inkspray issuing from the top and bottom with blue and deep red flowers, green leaves and gold balls. Full border, f. 1r, white vine-stem ornament on blue, green, deep red and gold ground between thin gold frames. In lower border, medallion, blank, framed by wreath, green with yellow highlights and narrow deep red frame. Partial border, f. 3r, white vine-stem ornament on blue, green and deep red ground between narrow gold frames, enlarged to elongated dots at terminals; white vine-stem ornament extends into upper (trimmed) and lower margins, with single gold balls with hair-line strokes. 8 large initials, 11- to 3-line, gold on blue, green, gold and deep red ground with white vine-stem ornament shaded with pale pink. First few words of each book in gold; incipits, explicits and marginalia in red., and Script: Written below top line in a bold round humanistic hand by a single scribe who added extra rulings in outer margins for headings, annotations, etc., in red. Additional annotations in humanistic cursive, in a brighter shade of red.

Seven illuminated borders with strewn flowers, leaves, fruits, birds, insects, and hybrids and nineteen miniatures of saints and other figures, on parchment, cut out from a book of hours and pasted onto folded paper sheets in the mid-nineteenth century, creating a scrapbook in the English Gothic Revival tradition.

Binding: Original quarter binding on two split leather thongs, square-edged beech boards; white pigskin decorated with blind-tooled fillets. One decorated brass clasp attached to the rear board, with a decorated brass catch fixed with three nails to the front board. The binding is reinforced with a strip of parchment cut from a ca. 1100 missal (?), decorated with versals and plain initials in red and a 5-line Romanesque initial in red with blue tendrils on a liquid gold background., Rubrics and underlining, versals and 2-line (3-line on f. 25r) plain initials, all in red. On f. 5r a 3-line initial at the opening of Ps. 1 is not executed. All decoration is missing on ff. 23v, 24bis r, 119bis r, f. 125v, line 12 to the bottom of f. 126r, ff. 137r-143v. On ff. 133r-136v there are rubrics (in pale red) but no initials. No guide letters., Script: The main part of the codex (ff. 1r-132v) is copied by a single scribe writing a bold and compressed small Gothica Semitextualis Libraria. Ff. 133r-143v and the two inserted leaves 24bis and 119bis are copied in a larger and less careful hand using the same type of script., and Watermarks: (1) Cardinal's hat, var. Briquet 3397 (1479-1494); (2) and (3) Bull's head, var. Briquet 15373 (1488-1501).

Binding: Original, yellowish pigskin over bevelled wooden boards; both covers blind-tooled with frames of fillets and rolls. Spine blind-tooled with three raised bands. Remnants of two clasps attached to the rear board, with engraved brass catches (one partly preserved) on the front board. Yellow spine., Red rubrics and red stroking of majuscules. Red initials: 1-line versals, 2-line plain initials; art. 1 opens with a 4-line initial and features several 3-line initials, all of the same type as the other ones in the manuscript., Script: Copied by two hands, both writing Gothica Textualis Formata. Hand A copied ff. 1r-8v (art. 1) in bold script with little angulariy and long ascenders and descenders; hand B copied all the other pages in Textus Semiquadratus in two sizes, with conspicable forking at the top of the ascenders, spurs, hairlines, a very short d and Southern German or Central European features such as the shape of the -orum and -arum abbreviations, the use of y for ii, etc. The texts on the inserted leaflets in art. 2 and some corrections are in Gothica Hybrida (Fractura)., and Slips of parchment with additional texts have been inserted between ff. 18-19, 33-34, 35-36.

Abstract:
Manuscript on paper, composed of two segments, formerly separate books. Part I: 1) Letter from Inigo Lopez de Mendoza, Marques de Santillana (1398-1458), to his nephew Pedro de Mendoza, Senor de almacan. Santillana promises to send a copy of his own sonnets, some proverbs, and sayings of the philosophers and of Seneca which Mendoza had requested, and discusses a translation of a letter of Seneca sent to him by Mendoza. 2) Reply of Mendoza to Santillana, about Santillana’s Sonnets. Artt. 3-25: sonnets by Santillana. Part II: 26) Pseudo-Seneca, Proverbia, Castilian tr. perhaps by Pedro Diaz de Toledo (d. 1499), Counsellor to Juan II of Castile, Chaplain to the Marques de Santillana, and later first bishop of Malaga. Each proverb is followed by an explanatory text. 27) Dichos de filosofos, in 29 parts, mostly lists: 4 things a king should do, 3 sorts of friends, etc. 28) Tacitus, Annales 14.52-56, in an unidentified Castilian translation.
