- Abstract:
- A collection of 75 wash drawings and watercolor landscape drawings, mostly unidentified and unsigned. Later annotations attribute the drawings to Mason, Gilpin and Holland, and identify specific places in the British Isles: Mason's Arched Rock on the Isle of Wright, Bolton Abbey; Gilpin's Windermere Lake; Summer House Aston Rectory,Yorkshire. Possibly drawings executed for Gilpin's series "Observations, relative chiefly to picturesque beauty, made in the year ..." or for his "Observations on the River Wye, and several parts of south Wales, &c." Also laid in is an engraving in blue ink on a paper doily etched with the title: Maths.Huelin & Ca. Malaga. Some drawings dated in pencil on mount, in a later hand, "1797".

- Title written in ink below image., Date supplied by cataloger., Inscription below title, in a different hand: This monumental inscription is cutt in brass, and sett in black marble, fixt into the south wall of a small chapple joyning to the church of Hungerford. Comm. Berks., Inscription at bottom of sheet: There formerly lay under it, the figure of a man in armour cross legg'd, but that is remov'd into another part of the church and is much defaced., and Mounted on page 41 in a volume of ca. 50 drawings that was assembled from works purchased by Horace Walpole at the Vertue sale of 1757. Now bound in red morocco, this volume has Walpole's manuscript title-page: Original drawings of heads, antiquities, monuments, views, &c. by George Vertue and others.

- Abstract:
- An album of amateur drawings, with scenes in Kent, East Sussex, Hertfordshire and Surrey. The artist, only identified with the initials 'S.G.L.', provides titles and dates for the majority of the drawings. The first group (thirteen in all) dated 1828 are views in Kent, Sussex, and Hertfordshire, including Leeds Castle, Hythe, Sandgate, Rye, Pevensey Castle, Tunbridge Wells, St. Albans, and Hatfield. The second, larger group of drawings are scenes in and round the village of Bletchingley (sometimes Bletchingly) in Surrey, depicting village life -- for example, the 'Church Yard', 'Parsonage', 'Farm Yard', landscapes with farm houses, country lanes, bridges, and people fishing, andc. -- and include both people and animals. Other views of places in the vicinity are scenes in Nutfield, London Road, Bletchingley from London Road, Rabbit Heath, et cetera All the drawings in or around Bletchingley (thirty-nine in total) are dated between August 14th and October 14th 1829. Several of the drawings are on blue paper and are highlighted with white chalk, conveying a nocturnal quality to the scene. A final group of ten undated, untitled drawings also depict rural scenes, presumably in southeastern England

This portrait was completed shortly before Locke's death, according to a contemporary annotation in ink on verso: This is a portrait of Mr. John Lock, author of the Letters on Toleration, the Essay on Human Understanding, on Coinage, & many other valuable pieces, sketch'd from a painting & afterwards (not long before his decease) finished up from the life, by George Vertue., One of eight portrait drawings that were probably among the works purchased by Horace Walpole at the Vertue sale of 1757.
