Abstract:
"Judges and barristers, variously mounted, and bunched together, are galloping towards Hell, where flames rise from a pit (right). They are led by the Devil, black and naked, with webbed wings, who rides the skeleton of a horse and grasps a sceptre inscribed 'P'. In front two demons, dressed as postilions, act as outriders riding together on a smaller horse's skeleton. The foremost flourishes two rolled documents: 'B[ill] of Indictment' and 'Exparte Information', and shouts: "D--n your lazy bones make haste, do'nt you see what company we have got." The other has a document inscribed 'Declaration' and cries: "Come Gentlemen do'nt be chop fallen tho' we have no juries you will have justice done ye--!" Nearest the spectator is Ellenborough mounted on a tiger, his head concealed, but identified by his wig and gown, his bulk, and his words (to the Devil): "You infernal Imp what are you grining at an be d--d to you!!" [cf. No. 12808]. Next him is the Chancellor, Eldon, on a horse; he says: "Throw it into Chancery, and I'll warrant it will lay there long enough." Beside these two are two barristers (perhaps the Attorney-General and the Solicitor-General, Shepherd and Gifford); one holds his nose, saying, "Curse it what a smell of Brimstone, one would think we were all going to Hell." The other, who rides a (?) fox, leans forward, to address the Devil: "I say Friend do you think we can put off the trial till next term." The Devil answers: "Indeed Friend Botherem we have no put off's in our court, Justice and Dispatch is the Law that guides us." A third barrister (left) sits facing his horse's tail, addressing a miserably emaciated and ragged man who is at the back of the procession on a wretched horse; he holds a 'Writ of Error' and says: "Egad I am afraid I shall not be up to the practice of this court, but with your assistance we shall have time to breathe a little." The other, who personifies the 'Long Vac[ation]', the name being on a scarf round his hat, answers: "Yes! yes! the long Vaccation has given many a poor fellow time to breathe, and brought their Tormentors to their last gasp!" "After the title: 'Dedicated to the enlightened and temperate Protestants of the united Kingdoms--.' The 'Bugabo' is held up by an Irishman in the centre of the design: a huge sheaf of straw to which is tied a mask inscribed 'Inquisition' with glaring eye-balls and fanged mouth; from the sheaf project a cross and a lighted church candle. The Irishman peeps from behind it, saying, 'Hurra! by Jasus! a'rnt I a comeing.' He terrifies a crowd of 'old women' (right) who flinch, flee, and fall. The foremost is Eldon, wearing a cap over a Chancellor's wig, and holding a 'Petition of the Old Women of Petty France Westmr against Catholic Emancipation' [cf. BM Satires No. 15716]. He says: 'Avaunt and quit my sight! Hence! Horrible shadow Hence! Hence without Hesitation!!' A little boy exclaims: 'D'ont be frightened Mother! why i'ts only straw!' A woman, holding a big birch-rod, to show that she is (?) Joseph Birch, M.P. for Nottingham, exclaims: 'Oh! this is the consequence of that fatal Thursday! O that I could give them their deserts I'd make them remember Birch!!' Of the remaining six women, one exclaims 'Indeed Sir it was not me that cried No Popery'; two others wear ducal coronets: Cumberland (moustached) says: 'Only let me catch you in Cumberlan thats all!' Newcastle (unrecognizable) adds: 'Aye or at Newcastle we'd make Pickle Salmon of him.' On the extreme left are Wellington and Peel; the Duke, who is in uniform with cocked hat, sword, and boots, says to Peel: 'That many would be frightened at straws is no more than I anticipated my worthy Colleague! -- but depend upon it they will find the Hearts of his Majestys Catholic Subjects contain as much Honor Loyalty and Gratitude as those of their fellow Countrymen of a different persuasion --and in time they will find I have made no Mistake!!' Peel, who walks hat in hand, carrying a box of 'Candi[ed] Peel', answers: 'It is with this conviction I have candidly acknowledged my change of former sentiments assured that your measures as leader of His Majesty's Government will prove as conducive to the Peace and Happiness of these realms as your Tactics when Leader of his Armies.'"--British Museum online catalogue

Grenville scurries es off stooping, his peer's mantle looped over his arm, leaving coat-tails and posteriors exposed; he says: "This comes of getting into bad Company." Howick, as he hurries off with his Catholic Bill, looks behind him at the King, saying, "I thought we should have cramed it down his throat." Moira, in uniform, stares in consternation. Petty and Erskine, both in their robes, escape together, much alarmed. Behind them, Sheridan slinks off, dressed as Harlequin, see BMSat 9916. Abstract:
"Birmingham brass-founders have cast a large brazen head, representing Sir Charles Wolseley, and are about to place it upon a full-dressed effigy without a head, which two men hold erect under a tripod. Two workmen carry the head from a furnace (left) towards the tripod; a third who stands behind says: "Say what they will of our Member they can't say he wants Head!!" One of the pair, who strain under the weight, answers: "No or that he is light headed!" The other adds: "Faith they'll soon find that out if they should come to logerheads." The (normal-sized) body is under the tripod from which hang ropes by which the head is to be hoisted into position. One of the men holding the ropes looks round to ask: "Have you put Brass enough in the [head] he'll soon be put out of countenance if you have 'nt." Two of the others say: "We are the Body and shanks when they are wanted you know!" and "Now Lads up with it! never mind a little mistake in proportion--it's a Head we want!" Behind them (left) is a furnace. From the right workmen hurry forward, one carrying two large cans of beer; one of them shouts: "Here is the liquor and the Parson, so make haste that we may Christen him." On the left lie the moulds in which the head and limbs have been cast. Tools and tankards are also on the ground. "The Pope has descended from his dais (r.) to bless the Petitioners; his cross rests against his shoulder, and both hands are extended, a ring on each forefinger. Behind the Pope, standing on tiptoe on the Papal robe, is Napoleon, dressed as at his coronation, wearing his crown and holding his sceptre. He puts his hand on the Pope's shoulder and says: "Thank them for pleading our cause and particularly for their assertion that the rightoman Catholic Religion is totally altered, make the people believe that, and we'll soon give them the second part of Fox's book of Martyrs." At the head of the petitioners kneels Fox, saying, "Bad luck now, better next time please your Holiness." The Pope says: "Bless you all my Children, for the great good you intended us, but it is not in Mortals, to command success, My Master here, will be very much disappointed". Behind Fox, Norfolk and Sheridan kneel side by side. Next are Derby, in hunting-dress, bending his head, and Moira in regimentals, very erect. Behind them and on the extreme left. "A sequence of seven designs of unequal size, divided by lines and arranged in two rows, four above and three below. The inscriptions parody 'The House that Jack built', cf. (e.g.) British Museum Satires No. 11414. [1] This is the City of Lisbon. A view of Lisbon with the Tagus in the foreground. [2] This is the Gold, that lay in the City of Lisbon. Four sacks heaped with coins, church plate, rosaries, &c. [3] These are the French who took the Gold, [. . . &c.]. Two French officers standing together, registering sly satisfaction. [4] This is Sir Arthur (whose Valour and skill, began so well, but ended so ill) who beat the French, [. . . &c.]. Wellesley stands in the foreground with drawn sword directing the battle; British soldiers pursue French troops. [5] This is the Convention that Nobody owns, that saved old Junots Baggage and Bones, altho' Sir Arthur [. . . &c.]. Junot sits complacently (right) while Wellesley signs the Convention, and Dalrymple and Burrard (not characterized) wait their turn. [6] These are the Ships that carried the spoil, that the French had plundered with so much toil, after the Convention which nobody [.. . &c.]. British men-of-war in full sail. "Marie Louise (left) sits on the edge of a canopied bed adjusting her garter (she is perhaps adapted from Mrs. Fitz-herbert in Gillray's 'The Morning after Marriage', British Museum Satires No. 7298). Her back is to Napoleon, who sits up in bed turning to the Devil (right) who approaches from behind the curtain, pitchfork in hand. The Emperor's hand rests on an open book: 'Aristotle's Master-piece or the Secrets of Nature Reveal'd'. He says: "My good friend I smell your approach, and know what you are come about, I am loth to part with Maria yet, and am consulting this book before I determine, yes! yes! she must sleep with her Aunts & Cousins if it is necessary for my Reputation I'll not he laughd at". The Devil, who is nude, with horns, webbed wings, and barbed tail, answers: "Poh! Poh! dont gammon me about books, you know your impotence, send her to Heaven, or I'll withdraw my protection and you'll come to Hell presto". Marie Louise says: "Oh dear! if this is the deligt's of Love I am surfeited already, to be sure few husbands disturb their wives rest more than mine does, but it's with starting & kicking in his sleep & crying have mercy on me. I suppose Josephine used to worry him so. bless me what a smell of brimstone there is!" On the floor (right) lie a book, 'Life of Henry the VIII of England', and two documents: 'Medical opinion on ...' and 'Progeny of the Emperor of Persia'. "A 'conjuror' or magician displays to John Bull on a screen four scenes, one below the other, representing the expedition to Flushing. He wears a conical hat with a wide fur brim, and his magician's robe resembles that of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, indicating Perceval; he holds a long staff or wand topped by a little head, that of Portland, grinning; it is labelled The Old One. John stoops to look through a telescope inscribed Patent directed at the screen, the vision on which is projected by a small dark-lantern held by Perceval. John is a yokel in a smock; beside him lies his cudgel inscribed Oak. He is highly delighted at what he sees, namely: [1] a fleet leaving England, tiny figures being indicated on the shore. [2] Ships bombarding and soldiers attacking a fortified town which is on fire. [3] The garrison of the town surrendering to British officers, with grenadiers drawn up at attention. A French officer holds out the keys of the town to Chatham, one of whose staff is in Highland uniform. Two tricolour flags are being laid down by fat Dutchmen in French uniforms. [4] British troops being landed from a man-of-war; wounded soldiers are being carried up the beach. John says: Zookers Measter Shewman that be a main foine sight sure enough, that will fright the Mounseers however Aye Aye they be at it. I think I can smell the Gonpowder, by Goles if they ha'nt done the Job! there's Mounseer and Mynheer on their Marrow-bones! but Dang it what have we got at the bottom here I be quite. Perceval interrupts: Stop! Stop! Mr Bull if you have got to the bottom of it I'll turn the Instrument for that part wont bear Magnyfieing. Canning (?), poorly characterized, as is Perceval, kneels (left), raising John's smock to take a money-bag from his pocket. He says: With your leave Johnny I'll take a little more money for the next shew of the Jubilee [see No. 11381]. A demon looks out from behind the curtain on which the 'Phantasmagoria' is projected; he laughs: He, He. The room is that of a quack, cf. No. 9611. A large crocodile is suspended from the roof, draped with a tricolour flag and labelled Caug [sic] in the Nile by Nelson [cf. No. 9250, &c.]. A bat (alive or stuffed) is also displayed. Perceval and John Bull stand within a circle surrounded by cabalistic signs and lit by a second dark-lantern which stands on the floor beside a celestial globe (left). Behind Canning and on the extreme left three small niches are recessed in the wall, one upon the other, in each of which is a skull; inscriptions: Conjuror Pitt (above), Katterfelto, and Conjuror Bute. They are: Curious Collection of Conjuros Capets [sic]. On a high shelf are documents: Way to raise the Wind; New Taxes; Proceedings in Spain and Portugal; Plan of an Expedition to Brobdignag; List of Killed and Wounded [torn]. A broadside is pinned to the wall. A soldier on two stumps for legs, supported on a crutch: Soldier Dick come from the War.
