"The Regent, in tight and dandified admiral's full-dress uniform, wearing a cocked hat, is carried by two bathing women (cf. British Museum Satires no. 8432) from a bathing-machine (right) to the barge 'Royal George', for transit to the royal yacht. Just behind is the machine, inscribed 'The Best Machines in Brighton'; from it two naked girls look towards the departing prince. A sailor standing in the barge, which flies the Royal Standard, seizes the Regent's ankles; one foot is gouty and swollen; he says to the man standing behind him (left): "My eyes jack this here craft will never carry him--we should bring the sheers and reeve a tackle for him in the long boat--!!" A naval officer stands beside the sailor, and shouts an order to the man behind: "shove the Barge further a stern & be d--d to you--what you about a head there." The Regent has an arm round the neck of each woman and grasps the plump breast of the nearer one who is comely. He says: "Do my dear Girls put me on board safe, I shall Tell Paget to give you some Grog--I have been almost suffocated in that infernal Bathing Machine--mind my foot." One bathing-woman says: "Faith he's no joke Judy the devil a heavier Burthen in all the country"; her comelier companion answers: "By my own soul I'd rather carry such a nice neat beautiful young Gentleman, than the best basket of mackerel that ever was at Billingsgate." The sailor on the left uses a pole to manipulate the barge, the bow of which is cut off by the left margin. He wears a tight blue jacket to the (pinched) waist, with red collar and cuffs, white trousers, and top-hat with a badge: 'Royal George'. With a grimace he says: "D--n these soldiers jackets I can't move in em--I suppose we shall all be lobsters by & bye!!" "An election mob in which Townshend and his supporters, as butchers, are violently attacking the populace with cleavers and marrow-bones. They wear aprons with butchers' steels dangling from the waist. George Hanger (right), his hat decorated with three ostrich feathers and the coronet of the Prince of Wales, raises a cleaver in both hands and threatens two constables with staves who fall backwards, wounded or terrified. He is in violent action, one foot rests on the unconscious body of a sailor whose face is gashed and bleeding. In the sailor's hand is a flag with a ship and the words 'Royal Navy'; on this Townshend, who uses his marrow-bone and cleaver as a musical instrument, not as weapons, is trampling. Behind Hanger, Fox, climbing above the crowd, is violently smashing the sign of 'The King's Head' (a bust portrait of the King) which is over a door inscribed 'Martin'. In the foreground a woman half-lying on the ground tries to protect her screaming infant from a cleaver and bone brandished by Sheridan. On the extreme left Lord Derby attacks a kneeling sailor with a wooden leg. The man at the head of the table, seated in a chair which is higher than the others, holds a blunderbuss and wears a hat. He must be Richard Parker, but does not resemble him. At his elbow and on the extreme right stands Thelwall filling a glass from a 'Grog' can; he says "Tell him we intend to be Masters, I'll read him a Lecture"; from his pocket hangs a paper: 'Thellwals Lecture' (see British Museum Satires No. 8685). One man only is seated on the president's left and on the near side of the table. He places a fist on a long paper headed 'Resolutions'. Under the table in the foreground, lifting up the tablecloth, five secret instigators are (left to right): Lauderdale, holding a paper: 'Letter from Sheerness to Ld L------le'; Horne Tooke, Stanhope, Grey, Fox, the most prominent, saying, "Aye, Aye, we are at the bottom of it", and Sheridan. "A pair of scenes on one plate, each with its own title, from The Political Register, September 1768, facing page 129. The scenes satirise the unpopularity and the alleged corruption and disloyalty of Lord Bute as he embarked on a trip to France. In the upper scene Bute is shown with a witch on a broomstick, laden with large bags of money, flying across the Channel, “over the Water to Charly” (an allusion to the Young Pretender in exile). Dover Castle is shown on top of a cliff on the left and Calais in the distance on the right. On the shore below Princess Augusta faints lamenting “Ah me what Shall I do Sawny is flown & with him all my Joy”. She is comforted by an attendant who hopes he will come again, a man beside her calls out to Bute ”Won’t you take Madam with you”. Others on the shore remark on his departure, one sailor says “Now he has got all our Dollars let him go.”, another would like to throw him to the shark, a boy throws stones and a man shoots at him, a satyr aims a bow saying “I’ll reach you my L(or)d where ever you go” Britannia sitting on the right advises her children to let him go so that she may recover. In the lower design Bute is shown being greeted outside the well guarded fort at Calais by the Young Pretender who calls him cousin and thanks him for his services. Bute, bonnet in hand and bowing , responds “I have sett the 3 Kingdoms at variance for your Sake my Prince now is your time or never”. The Mayor of Calais comes forward to welcome Bute effusively telling him of “the grand Monarqe’s” love; three monks on the left assure each other that Bute is not a heretic (Protestant) as he has demonstrated this by giving France such an advantageous peace. On the right an old woman in raptures is sure all the English ladies love him, while a Scot with a wooden leg plays on his fiddle singing “And the King shall enjoy his own again”.
