- Abstract:
- "Britannia, buxom and beneficent, sits on one side of the 'Irish Channel'; on a smaller piece of ground stands Pat, his hands deep in his coat pockets, looking sideways towards Britannia. She sits with her shield and spear beside a pile of bales of goods and a cornucopia from which pour coins and jewels; she holds out a scroll: 'Union of Security Trade & Liberty'. She looks appealingly towards Pat, her right hand on her breast, one foot trampling on a book inscribed 'Discord' and a venomous snake. Tierney, Fox, and M. A. Taylor look out from behind bushes, gazing fixedly at Pat: Fox says, his hand before his mouth: "Hip! my old Friend Pat! - hip! - a word in your Ear! take care of yourself Pat! - or you'll be ruin'd past Redemption - dont you see that this damn'd Union is only meant to make a Slave of you! - do but look how that cursed Hag is forging Fetters to bind you, & preparing her knapsack to carry off your Property, & to Ravish your whole Country, Man, Woman & Child! - why you are blind sure! - rouse yourself Man! raise all the Lawyers & spur up the Corporations, Fight to the last drop of blood, & part with the last Potatoe to preserve your Property & Independence -" Tierney says "beware Pat", Taylor echoes "beware." Pat is a sturdy fellow with bare legs; his clothes are ragged, his broken spear lies beside him. Behind (right) is a building in flames. He says: "Plunder & Knapsacks! & Ravishments, & ruin of little Ireland! - why - by St Patrick, its very odd, now! for the old Girl seems to me, to be offering me her Heart & her Hand, & her Trade & the use of her Shelalee to defend me into the bargain! - by Jasus! if you was not my old friend, Charley, I should think you meant to bother me with your Whisperings to put the old Lady in a passion, that we may not buss one another, or be Friends any more.""--British Museum online catalogue.

- Abstract:
- "Sir Francis Burdett, scarcely caricatured, is being drawn (r. to left.) by his supporters in his carriage towards the hustings, past a densely packed and cheering mob. He bows gracefully, his tricorne (with a tricolour cockade) under his arm. On the three panels of the barouche are depicted (1) a bird with an olive-branch, and the scroll 'Egalité'; (2) a hand emerging from flames holding up a fire-brand, with a scroll, 'The Torch of Liberty') a frothing tankard on which is a bust portrait of 'Buonaparte', the scroll 'Three Pence a Pot'. The first and third panels have the motto the 'Peace &\ Plenty'. The driver is Horne Tooke; he flourishes his whip over the heads of his team, and smokes a long pipe. In his hat are a tricolour cockade and a blue and orange (buff) favour. From his pocket issues a stream of election literature, part of which has reached the ground: 'Speeches for Sir Fra[ncis] on ye Hustings'; 'Hints'; 'Speech from the Hustings'; 'Speeches for the Crown & Anchor Dinner'; 'Sir Fra[ncis's] Address to the Mob'; 'Bills for all the Pissing Posts [cf. BMSat 9886]; 'Hints for the Democra[tic] Newspapers'; 'Sir Francis's Patriotic Speech on the Defence of the Country' [see BMSat 10054]; Bills for Hackney Coaches'; 'Important Fact - Pitt the Supporter of Justices'; 'No Begging Candidate'; 'No Squinting Representative'; 'A Squeese for the Contractors.' The last lies besides a dog over whose body the hind-wheel passes makine a wound from which guineas are pouring. Its collar is inscribed 'A Cur-tis' (Sir W. Curtis, a contractor, cf. BMSat 7676, was one of Mainwaring's chief supporters). Behind the carriage, in place of footmen, stand Sheridan Erskine, and Tierney. Sheridan, a favour inscribed 'no Govr Aris' in his hat, holds up a fringed pictorial banner, inscribed 'Governor Aris [the name almost obliterated] in all his Glory': Pitt violently scourges Britannia, whose hands are confined in a pillory. Erskine (in wig and gown) holds up a banner 'The Good-Old Cause' (a republican slogan of the seventeenth century), surmounted by a cap of Liberty with a tricolour cockade. Tierney holds up a huge key tied to a pole and labelled 'No Bastille'. Ten or more men drag the carriage by ropes; the wheelers are Fox as a ragged chimney-sweeper with a brush under his arm, and Norfolk, wearing a striped shirt and an apron and mopping his forehead. In front of these are Derby, as a jockey, and Lansdowne. The next pair are the Duke of Bedford as a farmer in a smock and (?) the Duke of Northumberland, wearing an apron. In front of these are Lord Carlisle as a tailor, with a pair of shears and a measuring tape, and Grey with shirt-sleeves rolled up. Near him is Lord Spencer. ..."--British Museum online catalogue.

- Abstract:
- "Britannia, terrified, faint, and dishevelled sits on the ground supported by Addington and Hawkesbury, and defended by Sheridan, a Silenus-like and ragged Harlequin. They are on the coast towards which are advancing many rowing-boats filled with little French soldiers. Napoleon stands with drawn sword in the foremost boat, a tiny figure with a large head and no body, to show that he is Nobody, as in BMSat 5570, &c. The distant French coast (right) is covered with troops marching towards the shore. Clouds of smoke rise from the beach, which is concealed by the foreground. Britannia, wearing Roman dress with cothurnes, raises her arms, and shrieks (parodying Hamlet): "Doctors & Ministers of dis grace defend me!" The 'dis' is scored through but conspicuously legible. Addington holds a bottle of Gunpowder to her nose, and looks in alarm at the approaching army. He says: "Do not be alarm'd my dear lady! the Buggabo's (the Honest Gentlemen, I mean,) are avowedly directed to Colonial service, - they can have nothing to do Here - my Lady! - nothing to do with Us! - do take a Sniff or two, to raise your Spirits, and try to stand, if it is only upon One Leg!" Hawkesbury looks down with deep melancholy, supporting her (cracked) shield, and holding her (damaged) spear. He says: "Yes my Lady, you must try to Stand up, or we shall never be able to "March to Paris"". Sheridan holds Harlequin's wooden sword of 'Dramatic-Loyalty' in his right hand (cf. BMSat 9916). On his left arm is a shield with Medusa's head, the snaky locks inscribed: 'Abuse', 'Bouncing', 'Puffing', 'Detraction', 'Stolen Jests', 'Malevolence', 'Stale Wit', 'Envy'. He wears a hat turned up in front with a tricolour cockade; its crown is a fool's cap with two ears and a bell. Round his paunch is a tricolour sash through which is thrust a paper: 'Ways and Means to get a Living'. He shouts in defiance at the distant army: "Let 'em come! - dam'me!!! - where are the French Buggabo's? - single handed I'd beat forty of 'em!!! dam'me, I'd pay 'em like Renter Shares, sconce off their half Crowns!!! - mulct them out of their Benefits, & come ye Drury Lane Slang over 'em!" Behind, between Addington and Sheridan, is the head of Fox, holding his hat before his eyes; he says: "Dear me - what can be the reason of the Old Lady being awak'd in such a Fright? - I declare I can't see any thing of the Buggabo's!" In the foreground lies a long torn scroll, headed 'Treaty of Peace.'"--British Museum online catalogue.

- "A pair of breeches, formerly belonging to Fox, much inflated and forming two merging and transparent globes with projecting legs, is poised (at the seat) on three ostrich feathers, erect in a round bed of (ministerial) roses (see BMSat 10558, &c). Within these globes members of the Ministry sit at a round table, devouring loaves and fishes. The nearest ones are in back view, and have the heavy posteriors characteristic of the Grenvilles (cf. BMSat 10530). Lord Grenville, a fish in each hand, with Lord Ellenborough on his right, Buckingham on his left., and, next the latter, Lord Temple. They sit on a cushioned bench like those of Parliament, which follows the curve of the breeches. The others, left to right from Temple, are Spencer, Windham, Erskine, Petty, Lord Holland, [Identified by his own note.] Moira, who sits full face opposite Grenville, Lauderdale, Sheridan, Howick; Sidmouth on Ellenborough's right completes the circle. All are gormandizing on fish in different degrees, except Spencer and Holland who eat normally. Before Grenville is a dish containing two large fish: 'Treasury' and 'Exchequer', see BMSat 10543, &c. A dog, its collar inscribed 'Tierney', puts its forefeet on the bench, yapping at Grenville's back (cf. BMSats 10128, &c., 10603). On the ground beside him are three cats eating fish in a dish inscribed 'Tabbeys'; their collars are inscribed 'Bet Fox', 'Fitz', and 'Jordan'. Rats surround a dish inscribed 'Scribblers' [ministerial journalists and pamphleteers]. Larger rats in the Ministerial rose-bed gnaw at the feathers which support the breeches. ..."--British Museum online catalogue.

- Abstract:
- "Sir Cecil Wray (left) is being drummed away from the hustings; Sam House, the central figure, beats a drum, looking at Wray. On the right, ignoring Wray, stands Fox addressing the populace, a cheering crowd behind him; he holds a flag on which is the figure of Britannia seated, holding the staff and cap of Liberty, and the words 'Champion of the People'. He says, "Friends & Fellow Citizens I cannot find words to express my feelings to you upon this Victory". Wray walks beside a procession which marches to Sam House's drum. It is headed by Chelsea pensioners with wooden legs, who scowl at him; one carries a crutch over his shoulder. They have two flags, inscribed respectively 'May all public Deserters feel public Resentment' (Wray had deserted the cause of Fox who nominated him for Westminster in 1782, see British Museum Satires No. 5998), and 'Chealsea Hospital'. They are followed by a detachment of maidservants, with a flag inscribed 'Tax on Maid Servants'; they carry over their shoulders a broom, a brush, a mop, a shovel. A crowd cheers frantically, hats are waved at the procession and at Fox. - "Britannia, massive, but childlike, sleeps in a large wicker cradle, rocked by Addington, dressed as an elderly woman, who is seated on a low stool (right). Hawkesbury, a thin and spinsterish nursemaid, (left) approaches the foot of the cradle holding out an ornate child's commode, inscribed 'French C . . k . . g Chair'. Behind the cradle appear the head and shoulders of Fox, looking furtively towards Britannia and Addington, while he hangs out napkins to dry on a cord stretched across the fireplace; one is 'French Cambrick'. Britannia sleeps with her thumb in her mouth, her right arm across the coverlet, holding her shield and spear; her uncovered shoulder shows that she is wearing a Roman corslet. The head of the cradle is inscribed: 'Requiescat in Pace'. Addington sings: "o, By - my Baby, my Baby, - o, By - in Peace! my dearee! - For such a sweet Nap as This, You never had, far nor nearee! - so. By - my Baby, my dearee!' On the ground is a casserole of 'French Pap'; on the plain chimney-piece are a bottle labelled 'Composing Draught' and a box of 'Opiate Pills'. Above it is a print of 'Buonaparte' playing a fiddle and capering ecstatically. On the wall (left) are a broadside: 'Rule Britannia . . . Britons never will be - ['slaves' torn off] and (right) a birch-rod tied with tricolour ribbon. - Abstract:
- "The King sits impassively in his badly damaged state coach, which is being assailed by a mob; facing him sit two courtiers in abject terror. Pitt (right), dressed as the coachman, drives furiously, lashing the horses, the hind legs only of the wheelers being visible on the extreme right. These are trampling on Britannia who lies prostrate, her shield and broken spear beneath her. Four footmen in striped liveries stand behind, one holding the straps; the others hold each other's waists: Loughborough, the Lord Chancellor, wearing his wig, stands next the coach; behind him is Grenville, then Dundas, wearing a plaid and with a bottle projecting from his coat-pocket. Last is Pepper Arden wearing a judge's wig. All, like Pitt, wear jockey-caps. Lord Lansdowne (right), a sansculotte, composedly fires a blunderbuss point-blank through the coach window, aiming at the King. Fox and Sheridan, facing Lansdowne, run beside the coach, holding on to it. Both are tattered ruffians brandishing clubs, but wear breeches. The other three assailants cling to the spokes of the back wheel to stop the coach: (left to right) the Duke of Grafton, neatly dressed and wearing a cocked hat with tricolour cockade, Lord Stanhope, and little Lord Lauderdale, both wearing bonnets-rouges. Behind, a sea of heads indicates the mob; they carry a tricolour flag inscribed 'Peace and Bread' and a loaf draped with black and spiked on a pitchfork. A cat, stones, and eggs shower on the coach, the crown on the top of which is broken."--British Museum online catalogue.
