- Approximately 65 manuscript letters, signed, relating to Simeon Baldwin or sons Ebenezer Baldwin and Roger S. Baldwin, 1788-1867. Circa 50 letters are addressed to Simeon Baldwin and pertain to his time as a city clerk, congressman, and judge in New Haven, Connecticut (and occasionally Washington, D.C.). Letters to Ebenezer Baldwin and Roger S. Baldwin primarily concern political or financial matters and Included is an oath of office taken by Simeon E. Baldwin, son of Roger S. Baldwin, in 1867
- Description:
- Simeon Baldwin (1761-1851) (Yale 1781) was born in Norwich in the Connecticut Colony and practiced law in New Haven. In 1790, he was elected New Haven city clerk--he served this position until his election as a Federalist to the United States Eighth Congress, which he held from 1803 March 4 to 1805 March 3. Baldwin was associate judge of the Superior Court from 1806 to 1808 and the Connecticut Supreme Court of Errors from 1808 to 1818. In 1826, he served as the Mayor of New Haven., Baldwin was married to Rebecca Sherman Baldwin (1764-1795), with whom he had seven children--among them were Ebenezer Baldwin (1790-1837) and Roger S. Baldwin (1793-1863) (Yale 1811)., and Source unknown.

- Description:
- In English., Watermarks: unidentified pot., Script: Written in a well formed chancery hand by a single scribe., and Binding: Sixteenth century. Endleaves reinforced with vellum, two leaves originally pasted to each board. Sewn on five single, tawed skin thongs laced into paste boards rounded on the outside of the spine edge. Beaded endbands sewn on leather or cane cores but not laced to boards. The spine is square, with traces of adhesive. Covered in dark brown calf, blind-tooled with a triple line border and a small central ornament. Two ribbon fastenings, now wanting. Leather broken at joint, sewing reinforced.

- Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of about 85 copies of primarily political documents pertaining to events between 1592 and 1632. The volume includes speeches and letters relating to the murder of Thomas Overbury and the trial of Walter Raleigh; a description of voyage to France to aid the Huguenot cause in 1626-7 and seige of La Rochelle; a factual account, with figures, of fighting in Thirty Years' War; "The examinations of the counterfett ghost that came into St James on fryday night the 13 of 9br 1612, beeing that day sennight after Prince Harries death," whose testimony was taken by Sir Thomas Chaloner and Sir John Holles; and the confession of Anne Lady Ross to the Star Chamber declaring that she had perjured herself by "accusing the said Right Honorable Countess of Exeter with an intent & purpose to poison" her. The volume also contains a copy of the will of Holles' father, Thomas Holles of Haughton, dated 17 March 1592 and "written in his owne hand"; and "A prayer wch my deere sister Wentworth did use, coppied from her owne hand, wch I had of my mother 24th Jan. 1631."
