Behind him is a small cottage-like building with a striped barber's pole mounted on the roof. In a large diamond pattern window is a skeleton, a wig stand, and a pet monkey. Above the window a large sign reads: "Matt. Manna apothecary, surgeon, corn-cutter, &c., &c. Man midwife, gentlemen shaved & hogs gelded. Shave for a penny & bleed for 2 pence." Below the window hangs a large shelf with a jar of Jalap and two bowls on it. A milestone in lower right corner reads: XXVI mile

He wears spectacles, a large flowing curled wig, an oddly-shaped cap decorated with a pair of horns like those worn on medieval women's head-dresses, an old-fashioned heavily-trimmed coat, a long brocade waistcoat and boots (which appear to date from the 17th century) with large spurs.
