Manuscript, in multiple hands, of a collection of about 25 primarily satirical or lighthearted poems, many on the subject of women and love. Poem titles include Damon to Philomel; Advice to a lady, by George, 1st baron Lyttleton; On Sr Isaac Newton; Upon the death of Mrs Page's dove; and A receipt to make an epigram by Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th earl of Chesterfield. Other poets include John Hervey, baron of Ickworth and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu., The last section of the manuscript contains a 19th-century collection of social letters by religious figures addressed to Mr. or Mrs. Young and Miss Anna Young, pasted or tipped into the volume., and The poems are followed by a copy of a letter from the Earl of Orrery to Thomas Southern, dated 1735; and several poems, including one on the death of Lady Caroline Seymour, and several rebuses and poems on flowers.

Most of the poems concern love, including An Amorous Catch; Solicitation to a Married Woman; and Ben Jonson's In Defence of Women's Inconstancy. Other verses include The Tragedy of Mr. Christopher Love, rendered in five acts; and Roger L'Estrange's Loyalty Confined. The volume also contains several instructional prose texts, including Directions for Right Writing; Directions for Making Latine More Elegant or Pure; and An Introduction to Philosophy; as well as epigrammatic notes "collected out of Mr. James Howell's letters"; a letter titled "News out of Scotland by way of Letter the Author unknowne;" and "An imitation of Mr. Cleveland's letter of thanks sent to my Lord Westmorland who was pleased to send him an elegant paper in commendation of his poetry."

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of 12 sentimental acrostic poems on the writer's marriage and family members, and 1 incomplete verse on maternal love. The acrostic on the phrase "to Colonel James John Forbes Leith, of Whitehaught. By Williamina Helen Stewart. Forbes Leith of Whitehaugh" is annotated with Forbes Leith's date of birth and the date of their marriage. Ten other acrostics are based on the names of the children, including "William Forbes Leith, Second Son," and are annotated with the dates and places of birth of the children to whom the poems are written. The last acrostic is on Williamina's father and is an extensive acrostic on the phrase "Colonel James Stewart, of the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment, Second Son of Charles Stewart Esquire, of Shambelly, New Abbey, near Dumbries." and These poems are followed by a chart, in pencil in another hand, with an attendance list of names labeled "Footbal," and then by about 130 pages of notes in a shorthand, interspersed, and at times drawn over, with numerous crude drawings in pencil and other notes in a childish hand. The drawings are primarily combative scenes, including several of soldiers with guns, men punching each other, and a series of boxing images. The volume is signed numerous times by two young boys, Henry and Augustus Nightingale, with their address, 17 Victoria Villas, Richmond, Surrey.

Autograph manuscript. Folios 1, 23, and 60, with about 10 others at end of manuscript (probably blank), have been cut out. Many leaves are written on both sides. FitzGerald's autograph pasted on fly-leaf. Accompanied by TLS from W. R. Browne to Thomas B. Mosher, TLS from Ralph A. Beals to Mr. Otis Bradley, and 2 periodical articles, all concerning the manuscript.
Manuscript on paper, in a single hand, containing about 43 entries including religious meditations; Biblical notes; religious poems and verse paraphrases on Biblical subjects; sermon extracts; a play titled "The Tragedye of Jepthas daughter;" a treatise on dueling "according to the unjustifiable Custome of this age by a true Lover of honnour;" and a collection of medicinal recipes. Elsewhere, a brief description of "the nature of the irish, who are cal'd naturall Irishe, out of Campion's History" is annotated, "This being a booke of Commmon place this comes not out of order." The volume begins with a letter addressed to the author's son, in which the author describes the contents of this manuscript as "the fruits of my solitude whilst under restraint" as a royalist prisoner at Exeter, ca. 1651-53.
