"Two sailors are bargaining with a scantily clad Indian girl with a basket of fruit. Although pineapples were luxury goods at this time, the mirror, and in particular the watch offered by the seaman on the left represent a disproportionately high price for the fruit. The girl’s hairstyle resembles a pineapple reinforcing the point that she is the object of their attention rather than her wares. The two men are dressed in their shore-going clothes with buckled shoes and silk stockings. They wear baggy cotton trousers and short jackets. The sleeve of the left-hand sailor has a mariner’s cuff outlined in white piping and his wool jacket has metal buttons, which are probably made of brass. He wears a straw hat and his hair is done in a pigtail or queue. Both men have large silk neckerchiefs probably originating in India. Sailor’s dress was much the same in the merchant service and the navy. He wears uniform, his hat and sword on the ground, the sword broken at the word Ho/nor inscribed on the blade. Two women (right) watch him furtively; one is intended for Mrs. Clarke, the other for Miss Taylor, who holds a purse. In the street outside the Thavies Inn, Holborn, the coach driver Tom Nero beats the horse that has collapsed under the weight of the overturned coach, having been overloaded with four lawyers who try to scramble out the door. To the right in the foreground, another man beats to death a sheep. Behind him in the mid-distance a sleeping drayman runs over a small boy with his cart loaded with barrels. To the left a driver uses a pitchfork to prod a donkey burdened with two men, a barrel, and a large trunk on its back. In the distance, a crowd of men follow a bull being baited by a dog. On the side of the building on the left, broadsides advertise a cock-fight and a boxing bout between James Field and George Taylor at Broughton's Amphitheatre
