"After the title: 'fully accow [crossed out and replaced with a 'u'] --tred the Hero lay.' Above the design: 'Review--PI 2.' Wellington, sword in hand, falls from his horse, his white trousers crashing into a patch of cow-dung. He wears (in place of his field-marshal's cocked hat) a bearskin so enormous that it may well have overbalanced him. His horse stands beside him, pawing the ground. Behind (right) a group of mounted officers watch the accident. On the left two privates in huge bearskins stand at attention."--British Museum online catalogue

"An ugly man (left) kneels (on a spotted handkerchief) at the feet of a plain old maid seated on an upright chair; he holds her left hand, his right is on his breast. She holds up her fan in a way more encouraging than coy. Both grin broadly. A patterned carpet and plain wall complete the design."--British Museum online catalogue

Depiction of the dream of Horace Walpole that inspired him to write The castle of Otranto. The fantastic scene involves a large armored hand perched atop an enormous staircase ascending four levels within a Gothic castle. Two suits of armor stand guard at the junctions of the staircase with each level, and two more are present in the foreground, suggesting that the staircase continues downward. Arched windows and a painting of a mounted knight are seen on the wall to the left of the staircase; a bat is seen flying above

"The design simulates a pyramidal monument in bas relief against a stone wall, supported on short Corinthian pilasters between which is an inscription. On the face of the pyramid Lady Cecilia Johnston, is seated in profile to the right on a round close-stool. She is thin and witch-like, her chin is support by her left hand, the elbow resting on her knee. In her right hand is a torn paper inscribed 'Tranquility'. Behind the stool stands a little cupid holding his nose; in his left hand is a torch, reversed. On the ground (right) are bones and two skulls which gaze at Lady Cecilia. Beneath is the inscription: "By Patience, minds an equal temper know, Nor swell too high, nor sink too low; Patience the fiercest grief can charm, And fate's severest rage disarm: Patience can soften pain to ease, And make despair and madness please, This the divine Cecilia found, And to her Husbands ears, confind the sound." Vide St Cecilias Day."--British Museum online catalogue and The allusions are to St. Cecilia (died 177) and to Cecilla's husband General James Johnston.
