Abstract:
"A family scene of barren discomfort. An elderly man (left) in profile to the right sits in a high-backed wooden arm-chair asleep. Next him his wife sits asleep, her hands clasped, her left elbow supported on a table. At the table sits a boy asleep over a book. On the right, very upright on the edge of her chair, sits a middle-aged woman, wearing a low bodice, her hair dressed high. In the foreground a dog and cat are fighting. The room is lit by one guttering candle which stands on the table. A window and a door are indicated."--British Museum online catalogue
Description:
Title etched below image., Sheet trimmed within plate mark., and Mounted on page 79 of: Bunbury album.
A scene in an artist's studio lit from an attic window (left). Four connoisseurs are grouped round a large canvas on an easel: an Apollo with a sheaf of arrows, head turned in profile to the left. The model is a tall black man in the pose of the Apollo but with very different features, the left hand holding the stick of a broom which supports the pose. A fifth connoisseur reaches up to alter the position of the model's head. The artist stands beside his canvas facing the invaders, the left hand, holding palette and brushes, rests on the canvas; he sucks his mahl-stick with a gloomy scowl. On the extreme right a cat sits in a cradle, behind which an alarmed little boy hides. The artist's wife, with an infant in her arms, faces the fire with her back to the visitors whose unwelcome intrusion is apparent. Behind is a bed with drawn curtains. Three casts from the antique decorate the bare room. The model's coat and hat lie on the ground (right). On the far left in the foreground a dog urinates against two canvases leaning against the wall

Abstract:
In a London street, young boys inflict various forms of cruelty upon animals. In the centre, a boy (Tom Nero), identifiable by the badge on his shoulder as a pupil of St. Giles's Parish School, thrusts an arrow into a dog's anus; he ignores the offer of a large tart from a sympathetic young gentleman (said by Paulson to be a compliment to the young George III). To his left on the front of the balustrade, a boy draws a prophetic picture of Tom hanging from the gallows. Below Tom, another boy ties a bone to a dog's tail. In the lower left, a dog disembowels a cat. In the center foreground another boy kneels on the cobblestones, about to release a cock, as another boy prepares to a stick at it; the boy behind him holds a second cock. On the balustrade one boy holds a torch while his companion blinds a bird with a wire. Further to the left on the balustrade a group of boys laugh at the sight of two cats fight as they are hung by their tails from a gibbet-shaped lamp post. Above them a cat with a pair of wings tied to its back has been tossed out the attic window to see if it could fly
Description:
Title engraved above image., State, publisher, and series title from Paulson., First in a series of four: The four stages of cruelty., Quotation engraved below image: "While various scenes of sportive woe, the infant race employ, and tortur'd victims bleeding shew, the tyrant in the boy. Behold! A youth of gentler heart, to spare the creature's pain. O take, he cries - take all my tart, but tears and tart are vain. Learn from this fair example - you whom savage sports delight, how cruelty disgusts the view while pity charms the sight.", 1 print : etching and engraving on laid paper ; plate mark 38.5 x 32.1 cm, on sheet 59 x 46 cm., and Plate 76 in the album: Queen Charlotte's collection of Hogarth works.

Abstract:
In an alcove on the right in an untidy garret, a man in a dressing-gown scratches his head as he writes on a sheet with the title "Riches a Poem". In the center of the image his wife is seated as she mends a pair of breeches; at her feet a cat and her kittens are curled up on the man's coat. Under the sleeve of the coat on the floor is an issue of "Grubstreet Journall." She looks to the door on the left where she is confronted by a milkmaid who holds a lengthy tally; the daisies in her bonnet suggest Michaelmas day when bills are due; she also is shown with a yoke across her back. Just inside the doorway a dog snatches the single pork chop from a plate on a chair; the cupboard above the door stands open to show empty shelves. Behind the poet, a baby lies in a bed crying. Above the poet's head is a print 'A View of the Gold Mines of Peru." Above the mantel is a "dare for larks" -- a circular mirror surrounded by eight smaller circular mirrors

Abstract:
A scene in London, possibly near St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, shows a musician at an open window holding his ears against the noise of the street; a pregnant ballad-seller chants while her baby cries and a parrot above her head on the lamp post squawks; a milkmaid and other street-traders cry their wares; one small boy plays a drum while another urinates under the startled gaze of a small girl who holds a rattle and stands by a house made of toy blocks; an itinerant oboist plays; a dustman carries his basket and a bell; a knife-grinder sharpens a cleaver, a dog barking at his feet; on the roof at the right two cats fight (both shown with arched backs) just beyond the chimney from which a chimney sweep emerges. A sign to the left of the musician's window advertises The Beggar's Opera. A sign on the building to the right reads "John Long Pewterer." In this state the horse on the extreme right is black (white in the earlier state), the boy's slate trailing on the ground was only half shaded in the earlier state, but is now darkened
