Abstract:
"Satire on Grand Tourists: scene outside an inn in France, with a sign reading "Poste Royale", where a young English gentleman, holding a copy of "[Lord] Chesterfield's Letters", arrives with his tutor. He is greeted by the smiling inkeeper wearing large wooden shoes stuffed with wool who holds out a menu; beside the innkeeper a positllion holding a whip climbs out of his large boots On the right, a fat servant carries two bottles of wine and four books; behind him another postillion drives the coach with two horses towards the right. In the background, a woman can be seen through the archway of the inn standing on a bench and reaching up to clip the wings of a cockerel; a door beside the arch, lettered, "Bon Chere icy chez La Grenouille / Traiteur", is open to reveal a ladder up which a cook has climbed in order to catch three cats running along a wall; he holds a knife in his hand. An image of a young Bacchus seated on a barrel has been chalked on the wall; a dog jumps up towards it. "A fight between Lyndhurst and Peel with Ellenborough and Wellington as bottle-holders. Lyndhurst (left), in Chancellor's wig and gown, staggers back, arms flung out, at a punch on the nose from Peel who lunges forward, ruthlessly pugnacious. Ellenborough, dressed and behaving as a dandy (in tight-waisted blue coat and white bell-shaped trousers), holding a tubular eau-de-cologne bottle, emblem of the dandy, cf. BM Satires No. 13031, registers alarm, exclaiming, 'Oh! Oh! my dear Lud, take care--he's a terrible hitter--or he'll have your Ludship's dear head in Chancery.' Wellington (right), in uniform with sword, gauntlets, and heavily spurred cavalry boots, says: 'That's it Bob; serve him out--He won't ride rusty after this I know.'"--British Museum online catalogue

"Between the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York trips the tiny Duchess of York, holding a hand of each, her arms raised in order to do so. Behind the three stands a colossal man in Highland dress wearing a plaid, sporran (with the Prince of Wales feathers as a crest), and feathered cap. The Prince (left), who is in civilian dress, wearing a round high-crowned hat, says, "My Dear little Sister when you are tired Big Sam shall carry you!" The Duke, handsome in regimentals, turns to her, saying, "come my Love you shall see Papa driving the Pigs & Mama Milking the Cows". He points (right) to a distant scene, where the King in hunting dress chases two galloping pigs with a whip, saying, "Pig wont go", and the Queen is milking a cow."--British Museum online catalogue

"A boxing encounter; the combatants, wearing waistcoats and gloves, stand facing each other with clenched fists. One (left) says:"I'll Box the Minister about if I get in & tip him Seven the Main". The other (right) says: "Now Mr Alderman I vil Show you vone Jews Blow". Each has a second; on the extreme left a backer sits on a cask inscribed 'Combe's Entire [scored through] Small hopes'; he holds a paper inscribed 'Aldn Combes for ever' and says: "He'll Make a better Boxer than a Parliament Man". On the extreme right the bottle-holder of Combe's opponent stands holding a bottle and a lemon. "George IV, crowned, and with orb and sceptre, sits on a coronation chair in Westminster Abbey (right). The Archbishop, well characterized, stands beside him, holding his mitre, his right hand on the chair. On the King's right hand stands Londonderry (Castlereagh) in Garter robes; other peers stand behind him. All watch the antics of Canning, dressed in parti-coloured clothes as a merry-andrew or buffoon. He kneels on the dais at the King's feet, arms flung wide; at his feet is a high-crowned hat with a peacock's feather; on the back of his tunic are the letters M P and P C. He declaims: The delight of the Nation at the Celebration of your Majesty's Coronation, the Exultation throughout the Creation exceeds all Imagination. the Expectation to which the Anticipation of this Consumation has given occasion is beyond Contemplation; we offer the Oblation of our Congratulation, without Hesitation or Trepidation; no Tribulation can effect a Cessation of the Sensation which pervades every Station; no Situation in whatever Deprivation will utter an Execration for the Association are in Preparation to effect an Extirpation of all Defamation. We hope the Expectation of a Decollation will produce Annihilation of all Deviation from strict Regulation; we submit to Subjugation without Hesitation, and we offer our Oration with gratefull Adoration upon this Jollification. The King composedly touches (or kicks) Canning's chin with his toe. Peeresses stand in a gallery across the north transept, holding their coronets. She towers above them, holding a long pike surmounted by a cap of 'Liberty' and holding out to John Bull, a yokel (as in BMSat 8141), a handful of 'Assignats'. Hissing serpents form her hair and serpents suck at the pendent breasts which her ragged garments do not cover. She has webbed wings, and wears a French cocked hat with a tricolour cockade inscribed 'Liberty'. ... John Bull stands on the left, scratching his head with a puzzled grin; he wears a smock and very wrinkled gaiters; his hat and a pitchfork are in his left hand. ... Sheridan stands between Alecto and John Bull. ... Fox is much larger than Sheridan, both wear French Grenadier's caps. On his drum is the head of a Medusa (Discord) with snaky locks.
