"Ministers and others strike at a shuttlecock above their heads inscribed 'Speakers Warrant'; among the feathers sits a little man holding a crowned staff; he says: "Curse this game I dont Like it I never experienced Such boning about in my life, I wonder when you will have done"; he is Colman the Serjeant-at-Arms. Eldon, in his Chancellor's wig and gown and holding the Purse of the Great Seal, is the centre of a close group; he says: "Dont knock it here we have not power to Strike it". Perceval, in back view, wears his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown and holds a document inscribed 'Majority'; he says: "Curse the thing I wish I had never Seen it away with it". A second judge whose head is partly visible behind Eldon is probably Ellenborough. On the right is Gibbs, holding a paper inscribed 'Attorn[ey Gen]eral'. He says: "D-n it Ill hit it as Hard as I can tho I'm almost afraid to meddle with it". There are two others in the group, one is silent, the other resembles Canning (not in the Ministry); he says: "Sure honey Right or wrong I always stick to the Strongest Side so do let me have a Slap at it". The sturdiest striker stands in back view on the left, with a paper inscribed 'Read Bow Street' projecting from his pocket; he says: "I cant Read it Die Veneris! why its Spanish to me we dont understand Them there warrants". On the extreme left stands the Speaker, Abbot, with a bat inscribed 'Double'; he says: "Dont Strike it to me again Ill have nothing more to do with it I've sent it to Bow Street". The bats used are not the usual long-handled battledores as (e.g.) in British Museum Satires No. 9716, but short-handled wooden bats. "A pugilistic encounter between two old market-women who are Eldon (left) and Wellington (right). Eldon is much the stouter and more purposeful, facing his enemy grimly and aggressively. He has a basket of oranges (emblem of the Orange Lodges) beside him, and wears a flat wide-brimmed hat. Wellington wears a soldier's coat over his skirt and apron (as beggar-women or basket-women often did, cf. (e.g.) BM Satires No. 15763). His profile is apprehensive, his hands loosely closed and on the defensive. Each has a bottle-holder; that of Eldon is John Bull, a stout yokel who puts his hand on his principal's bulging posterior, saying, 'Welldone--old Mother Baggs--you have got the best bottom after all. see what it is to have a good Constitution--give it her--she has'ent got the Mounshears to deal with now.' Wellington's supporter is a bare-legged Irish ragamuffin with a pipe thrust in his little hat. He capers excitedly, putting a hand on Wellington's back to push him forward, saying, 'Murder ye ould cat kape your fists Tight--or you'I let the Ould Orange-Woman bate ye clane.' In the background is a freely sketched crowd of spectators, women of St. Giles or Billingsgate. Two only are characterized: a fat woman with parson's wig and bands, with a basket of 'Oxford Sauce' on her head, looks over her shoulder at a handsome young virago (Peel), who is shouting at her, to say: 'Come give us none of your Jaw--Mother peel'."--British Museum online catalogue

Alecto, a fantastic hag, stands outside the Crown and Anchor tavern between a diminutive Sheridan (left), playing a fife, and Fox (right), a burly drummer, both wearing regimentals. She towers above them, holding a long pike surmounted by a cap of 'Liberty' and holding out to John Bull, a yokel, a handful of 'Assignats'. Hissing serpents form her hair and serpents suck at the pendent breasts which her ragged garments do not cover. She has webbed wings, and wears a French cocked hat with a tricolour cockade inscribed 'Liberty'. She says: "Come on my brave Lad, take this bounty-money, & enter into my Company of Gentlemen Volunteers enlisted in the cause of Liberty - I'll find you present pay and free quarters, & I'll lead you where you shall fill your knapsack with Plunder; - nay Man, never talk about your old Master the Farmer, I'll find you Hundreds of Masters as good as he; Zounds I'll make you one of the Masters of England yourself: - come on, I say, keres riches for you, - come on; the glorious 14th of July is approaching, when Monarchs are to be crush'd like maggots, & brave men like yourself are to be put in their places - here hold your hand, enter boldly in the cause of Freedom, & cry Huzza - Vive la Nation! Huzza". John Bull stands on the left, scratching his head with a puzzled grin; he wears a smock and very wrinkled gaiters; his hat and a pitchfork are in his left hand. He answers: "Wounds, Measter Sarjeant, an I should enter into your sarvice, what'll Varmer-George say to I, for leaving of 'en without warning? - and yet I is half in love with the sound of your drum; & wishes to leave off Ploughing & dunging, & wear one of your vine cockades, & be a French Gentleman; - & yet, dangs it, it goes against ones heart to leave the Varmer; - ah Varmer George has been a rare good Measter to I! - but, am I to have all them fine paper Moneys - but to leave my old Measter! "John Bull, a much overburdened soldier, looks up in angry dismay at a helmet inscribed 'Glory' which Pitt (left) is about to place on his head. "The corner of a tailor's fitting-room. A hideous and plebeian Englishman, fat and short-legged, and wearing a curled Brutus wig, looks at his reflection in an elaborately framed wall-mirror crowned with a bonnet-rouge (left). The tailor, a simian monstrosity standing behind him (right), adjusts the sleeve of the coat. The coat (so styled after de Bry, see BMSat 9389) has a high collar, is heavily padded, with full sleeves gathered at the shoulders, and is cut back into narrow tails. The boots have long pointed toes, the tops, with high tasselled peaks, projecting in front of the leg far above the knee. He stands on a large volume: 'Nouveaux Costumes'. The tailor is foppish, though wearing a bonnet-rouge with a long peak, long queue, ungartered stockings, and slippers. A tricolour measuring-tape is draped about him. He says: "A ha! - dere my Friend, I fit you to de Life! - dere is Libertè - no tight Aristocrat Sleeve, to keep from you do, vat you like! - aha! begar, dere be only want von leetel National Cockade to make look quite a la mode de Paris!!" John Bull answers: "Liberty! - quoth'a! - why sound I can't move my Arms at all! for all it looks woundy big! - ah! damn your French Alamodes, they give a man the same Liberty as if he was in the Stocks! - give me my Old Coat again, say I, if it is a little out at the Elbows." On the wall (right) is visible the left portion of a framed plate of the official costumes of the Directory (see BMSat 9196, &c): in six compartments are tiny simian creatures inscribed respectively: 'Membre du Directo[ire], Cornell des Anciens, Ministre, Conseil des 5 Cents, Juge------, Administrat ...'. "Ministerial rats with human heads scamper about a barn, searching for food. John Bull, a yokel in a smock and holding a pitchfork, holds open one leaf of the door facing the spectator, to watch their antics with amusement. George III, in profile to the right., puts a hand his shoulder, and says: "What! What! looking for Grain, eh! looking for grain; it's all gone, all gone all gone, quite Empty." John answers: "Why, these Hungry Rats thought to have had some fine pickings, I warrant, but egad they'll he woundedly mistaken, tho'f they seem to want it nationly; but that dom'd Scotchman [Melville] carried off a rare lot of it & as to poor Billy the Butler [Pitt] why he was so fond of a drop of Black Snap, [Perjorative for thick, sweet port. Partridge, 'Slang Dict.', 1938.] that when he and his friends, not at it, d'ye see, the rest of the Servants did as they pleased, poor Rogues I'se afraid they'll Undermine the Barn they're so main Hungry." The rats are on a smaller scale. On the extreme left., Lord Derby peeps from a bin inscribed 'Treasury', saying, "Why I suppose the Old Rat Died because there was nothing to feed upon." Moira climbs down a tilted sieve, Grenville sniffs at an upturned '[T]reasury' tub on which Lord Ellenborough sulkily reposes. Grey scampers towards an empty lantern but Windham has dragged out its candle and is nibbling at it. Sheridan races towards the candle from the r. Behind him is Erskine, looking sly. A bulky animal wearing a garter ribbon, probably the Marquis of Buckingham, lies with its head inside an empty '[T]reasury' sack. Fox and Bedford nibble at a pile of tattered and folded sacks on which is Lord Spencer, looking down at them. In the background are three other rightats, whose heads are less characterized: those on the left may be Sidmouth and Lauderdale; one nibbling a bundle of straw (r.) resembles Burdett."--British Museum online catalogue
