Lady Archer is the most prominent; she holds a pack of cards in one hand, a knave in the other, looking with a triumphantly rapacious smile at a stout lady (? Mrs. Hobart) who sits (right) clenching her fists and scowling back. All the others have expressions of alarm or concern, the least agitated being the Prince of Wales, seated on Lady Archer's left. On the extreme right and next Mrs. Hobart is Fox, turning up his eyes. The guests (except the Prince) are much caricatured; one of Gillray's witch-like hags sits between the Prince and Mrs. Hobart. Either a copy or the original of British Museum satire no. 7388, in any event similar design except that Sydney, the coronet, and the tailor's goose are absent and inscriptions have been added; the satire alludes to taxes imposed by Pitt prior to 1788. The Prince says: "I appeal to the People of England to defend their own Rights and those of the House of Brunswick against this Banditti of Plunderers". Richmond says: "Tho' a Bastard of the Stuart Race, I have only 17,000£,per Ann: from the Poor, for my duty on Coals - make it 20,000 Prince Pitt, and I am yours for ever." (An allusion to the 'Richmond shilling', see BMSat 7393.) Grafton says: "I am as good a bastard as R------d, & yet I have only 6 or 7000£ a year upon the Excise on Wine & spiritous liquors - But Prince Pitt has promis'd me an additional Tax on Malt." Pitt says: "The Prince of Wales has no more right to the rightegency than I have." In the foreground on the left and right are 'White's' and 'Brookes's'. The former is being raided by French troops; the Opposition is in triumphant possession of the latter. In the centre foreground a 'tree of Liberty' (see BMSat 9214, &c.) has been planted: a pole garlanded with flowers and surmounted by a large cap of 'Libertas'. To this pole Pitt, stripped to the waist, is tied, while Fox (left) flogs him ferociously, a birch-rod in each hand. Between Fox's feet lies a headsman's axe, bloodstained; on it stands a perky little chicken with the head of M. A. Taylor (see BMSat 6777). On the right is an ox, his collar, from which a broken cord dangles, inscribed 'Great Bedfordshire Ox' (the duke of Bedford); it is tossing Burke, goaded on by Thelwall, who holds its tail, and flourishes a document inscribed 'Thelwals Lectures' (see BMSat 8685). Lord Jersey, dwarfish, shambling, and elderly, dressed in nightcap and night-shirt (on which is a 'J' with a coronet), stands by the door, holding a candle and pointing to the bed; he raises his night-cap deferentially to the Prince, who says, with contemptuous arrogance, 'va-t-en' (see BMSat 8809).
