Duroc, in his shirt, lies supported by a soldier on a wooden bed, while Napoleon (right) holds his right hand, turning away (to the right) and covering his face with his left hand. An officer stands solicitously beside the Emperor, supporting his left elbow. Another officer stands (left) behind the head of the low bed. On the extreme left a soldier bends over a table compounding medicaments. Duroc's coat and sword lie on a camp-stool, beside his hat and boots. A glimpse of the distant camp is seen on the extreme right, where a Mameluke stands by the tent holding Napoleon's horse. Duroc is addressing the Emperor, with his left arm extended. Their words are etched below the title: "Duroc, "My whole life has been consecrated to your service, nor do I regret its loss, but for the use it still might have been of to your Buonaparte, "Duroc!" there is a life to come; it is there you are going to wait for me, and where we shall one day meet again!" Abstract:
On the coast of France outside a tavern on the coast of France a group of emaciated soldiers are preparing to sail for England. On the right a soldier roasts frogs over a fire on the blade of his sword; above a flag with the words "Vengence et le Bon Bier et Bon Beuf de Angletére." In the center of the design, a monk tests the edge of an axe as he bends to over a horse-drawn sledge laden with instruments of torture, a statue of St. Antony, and a plan for a monastery at Blackfriars. In the distance on the left a line of soldiers are being forced on board a ship. Above them on the cliffs, women are seen ploughing a field. The sign above the tavern advertises Soup meagre and identifies itself as "La Sabot Royal."

"Two designs placed side by side, the title so arranged that 'The Contrast' applies to both, the first four and last two words to the two designs respectively. [1] A scene outside Jaffa where the French flag flies from a fort on a rock at whose base are hospital tents (left), in which the sick can be seen. In the foreground Napoleon (a poor portrait) points with an imperious gesture to a bottle of 'Opium' in the hand of a distressed doctor in civilian dress. He says: "Don't talk to me of Humanity & the feelings of a generous heart, I say Poison those Sick dogs they are a burthen to me, & can no longer fight my Battles!!! I say destroy them - As for those Turks, them up in the Garrison, turn all the Guns upon them, Men, Women, & Children & blow them to atoms, they are too bold & resolute for me to suffer them to live, they are in my Way." In the middle distance (left) is a body of Turks, their arms tied behind them, guarded by a French soldier who points at Napoleon. Behind Napoleon two French officers exchange glances, acutely dismayed at the orders." ... [2] Two black soldiers, in neat regimentals, prepare to kill three haggard French officers. One raises an axe to smite a bound prisoner. "A colossal but life-like bust of Napoleon is placed on a mound of decollated human heads. He gazes fixedly upwards in profile to the left; round his neck and bare breast is twisted a noose of rope. Round this idol dance demons with human heads, holding hands. They are naked except for head-coverings, and have horns, hairy legs, tail, with one leg terminating in a cloven hoof, the other in the claw of a bird of prey. These 'Hell Hounds' have labels hanging from a collar of rope, showing that they are 'Caulincourt', 'Fouché', 'Savory', with a pen in his hat (he succeeded Fouché as Minister of Police in 1810), 'Vandamme', 'Davoust', 'Ney', 'Lefebre'. Two demons fly towards the emperor, holding a large wreath which is on fire, with the inscription 'He Deserves A Crown of Pitch.' This they are about to place on the idol's head, towards which gallops through the air a small demon (right) on a goat, blowing a horn. In the foreground lie dead and dying soldiers, one is decapitated, another (right) is naked and has lost an arm which he holds out with an agonized expression towards the idol. Outside an English country inn, over whose door a sign reads "Duke of Cumberland Roast and boil'd every day", a group of soldiers and sailors laugh at a large caricature of Louis XV on the tavern wall. They sit with two attractive young women around a table on which sits a large pie, a tankard, and a broadsheet with the verses of "Rule Britannia." In the lower left a soldier leans against a drum as he plays his flute; the music sheet in front of him is "God save Great George our King". To the right, a short well-fed man smiles as he stands on tip-toe to reach the height required by the recruiting sergeant. In the distance, soldiers are drilling in an orderly fashion; beyond them, on a hill is a large country house
