He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1791, and in 1792 he was appointed Portrait Painter in Crayons to the King. In 1797, he began to lose his vision almost completely. He died in London in 1810., and No. 5 in the Catalogue of Framed Pictures in the Lewis Walpole Library.

Portrait of Lady Elizabeth Laura Waldegrave

Title devised by curator., Ozias Humphry (1742-1810) was a British miniatures and portrait painter. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1791, and in 1792 he was appointed Portrait Painter in Crayons to the King. In 1797, he began to lose his vision almost completely. He died in London in 1810., and No. 16 in the Catalogue of Framed Pictures in the Lewis Walpole Library.
Maria Walpole (1736-1807) was the daughter of Sir Edward Walpole (1706-1784) and his common-law wife Dorothy Clement (1715-1739). She married first, in 1759, James Waldegrave (1714-1763), Earl Waldegrave, and second, in 1766, Prince William Henry Hanover (1743-1805), Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh., Maria, Countess Waldegrave, dressed in mauve, when the widow of James Waldegrave, Earl Waldegrave. Hone painted his miniature after the Sir Joshua Reynolds portrait in the Euston Hall Collection, Suffolk (Mannings, D. Sir Joshua Reynolds, number 1900)., Signed by the artist with monogram, lower right., Date of the minature is based on the Reynolds portrait., Portrait set in gilt metal locket with burnished glass bezel and ridged case edge. Maria Walpole (1725?-1801) illegitimate daugher of Sir Robert Walpole, prime minister and his mistress Maria Skerrett; the daughter later became the wife of Colonel Charles Churchill. She is wearing ermine, an indication of noble status that she did not have until her father obtained for her a patent of precedence as the daughter of an earl in 1742. This portrait may have been made to mark this event., Title, date, and artist assigned by curator., Framed in antique carved wood., Formerly (and purchased as) a portrait of the Duchess of Gloucester, Edward Walpole's daughter Maria (1735-1807), who married the 2nd Earl Waldegrave before marrying the Duke of Gloucester. Mis-identified as such in the print version of Neil Jaffares's Dictionary of Pastellists before 1800.
