Manuscript on paper of Iohannes de Virgilio (Giovanni del Virgilio, 1300-1350), Allegoriae librorum Ovidii Metamorphoseos, in prose and verse.
Description:
Binding: Fifteenth century. Brown leather (sheepskin?) over cardboard (replacing worm-eaten wooden boards), blind-tooled with a frame of fillets and rolls; in the central panel a motif made of small rhomboid stamps. Parchment front pastedown. Remnants or marks of four clasps attached to the front cover., Copied by one hand in extremely small Humanistica Semitextualis Libraria. In the poetical sections the majuscules at the opening of each verse are set apart., Headings (“liber secundus” etc.) in clumsy Capitalis (several times erroneous: “LIBE”). Space for a 2-line initial left free on the first line of f. 1r, although this is not the beginning of the text., and Watermark: tower, var. Piccard, Turmwasserzeichen 611-613; var. Briquet, 15911?.
Manuscript, on paper, in a number of hands, containing a variety of religious and devotional texts, many related to the Franciscan order. Contents include lives of Francis of Assisi, Clare of Assisi, and Anthony of Padua; a poem on the day of judgement in ottava rima; lives of Christ and the Virgin Mary in Italian; writings of St. Bridget of Sweden in Italian; an account of the dedication of St. Lawrence's cathedral in Genoa; St. Anselm's Miracles of the Virgin; and two itineraries of visits to the Holy Land.

Manuscript on parchment (endpieces, holes, speckled on hair side) of 1) Joannes Cassianus, extracts from De institutis coenobiorum et de octo principalium vitiorum remediis libri XII. 2) Joannes Cassianus, Conlationes XXIV. 3) Miscellaneous notes. 4) Ambrosius Autpertus, Oratio contra septem vitia. 5) Joannes Cassianus, extracts from Conlationes XXIV.
Description:
Binding: Twelfth century, Italy. Original sewing on two tawed pigskin slit straps. The sewing supports and endband cores are laced through a tawed skin spine lining (from a palimpsest?) which extends about 50 mm. on either side and is turned in at head and tail. There is a fragment of finely woven cloth caught up by the lower sewing support and kettle stitch. Chevron endbands on tawed skin straps, one of which extends across the lower side under the lower turn-in. The lower side is reinforced with two irregular pieces of vellum. A flush, tawed skin cover with overlapping corners and irregular turn- ins, wide at the fore edge. Stubs of fastenings which are extensions of the supports. Contemporary title in ink on upper cover: "liber intitulatur de habitu monachorum". Decorative panel containing a drawing of an unidentified animal smeared blue and/or green within a border of brown circles, on lower side., One decorated 5-line initial (rubbed) on f. 1r, constructed of interlacing bands in parchment, outlined in brown ink against an irregular red ground. Plain red initials, some of which are drawn vertically rather than upright, and often with small red pearl designs, appear to be executed by many different hands. Instructions to rubricator in upper margin of f. 1r. Guide letters for decorator., and Script: Written by multiple scribes of varying degrees of accomplishment in late caroline minuscule and early gothic bookhand.
Binding: Twentieth century, England. Quarter bound in alum tawed pigskin, blind-tooled, over oak boards. Title, in ink, on head edge: "Statij. thebaidos". Title on spine: "Statii Thebais/ MS. 1406"., One garishly painted initial, 16-line, red and blue divided with penwork designs in both colors. Spaces left for decorative initials at beginning of remaining books are unfilled. For ff. 1r-13r only: headings, paragraph marks, underlining of passages glossed in marginalia and running headlines, all in red; for ff. 1r-16v: first letter of each verse touched with yellow., Purchased from C. A. Stonehill in 1952 by Thomas E. Marston., Script: Written by several scribes in scripts ranging from calligraphic mercantesca to a more formal gothic bookhand., and Watermarks, obscured by text: similar in type to Piccard Horn VI.110-29.
Manuscript on paper of Guarinus Veronensis (Guarino da Verona, 1374-1460), De diphthongis, consisting mainly of annotated lists of words containing the diphthongs "ae" and "oe" successively. In both cases the words beginning with the diphthong come first, followed, in alphabetical order, by those in which the diphthong is in another position ("in mediis"). In the introductory text spaces have been left open for the Greek words, which have not been added.

There are guide letters and space for a 4-line initial on f. 1r and a 2-line initial on f. 1v, but neither initial has been executed., Script: One hand, writing an imperfect Humanistica Semitextualis Libraria, using tironian et instead of the ampersand and mixing ae and ẹ., and The paper at places damaged by the acid ink.
