"George IV, dressed as a magician, rises from the throne (right) to give a wooden sword to Canning, who is dressed as Harlequin. A clown (intended for Melville) turns his back on Canning and the King, to run off, registering anger and alarm. Wellington stands fiercely, with legs astride, both arms raised, holding his sword; he wears uniform with boots and cocked hat. On the left Eldon and Westmorland stand together, with flexed knees, registering senile dismay. The latter, dressed as Pantaloon, drops his crutch. The King, in a robe bordered with symbols (serpents, &c), has the curled wig and whiskers which he had discarded (cf. British Museum Satires No. 14637). He chants: Harlequin! the Gods above have now decreed That thou and all thy measures shall succeed. Fear not old El--n, nor that Pantaloon, West----d, the bold Duke, nor the Scotch Clown. "A three quarter length portrait of Dr. Messenger Monsey walking towards the spectator; his right arm rests on the shoulder of a Chelsea pensioner; both men walk with sticks. Monsey wears a hat and wig, the pensioner holds his hat in his right hand. The background is the north front of Chelsea Hospital showing its pediment and eastern portion. This is very freely sketched, as are two pensioners with crutches by the doorway. Beneath the title is etched: 'Epitaph on the late Dr Monsey, supposed to have been written by himself. "Sir Cecil Wray (left) is being drummed away from the hustings; Sam House, the central figure, beats a drum, looking at Wray. On the right, ignoring Wray, stands Fox addressing the populace, a cheering crowd behind him; he holds a flag on which is the figure of Britannia seated, holding the staff and cap of Liberty, and the words 'Champion of the People'. He says, "Friends & Fellow Citizens I cannot find words to express my feelings to you upon this Victory". Wray walks beside a procession which marches to Sam House's drum. It is headed by Chelsea pensioners with wooden legs, who scowl at him; one carries a crutch over his shoulder. They have two flags, inscribed respectively 'May all public Deserters feel public Resentment' (Wray had deserted the cause of Fox who nominated him for Westminster in 1782, see British Museum Satires No. 5998), and 'Chealsea Hospital'. They are followed by a detachment of maidservants, with a flag inscribed 'Tax on Maid Servants'; they carry over their shoulders a broom, a brush, a mop, a shovel. A crowd cheers frantically, hats are waved at the procession and at Fox. "George IV, seated on the throne, watches a display of jovial fraternization between John Bull and Pat, who dance, holding hands, each holding up a hat decorated respectively by rose and shamrock. A lanky garland of (thornless) roses and giant shamrocks drapes the crown on the back of the throne; one end is held up by Wellington (right), on the King's left, the other by Peel on his right, so that the King is framed by it. John Bull is an obese and drink-blotched "cit", with a snuff-box inscribed 'Irish' in his waistcoat pocket. Pat is a ragged Irish peasant, his bare legs swathed by twisted straw; his shillelagh lies on the ground; he looks with a broad but appraising grin at J. B., who sings: "Together reared together grown, Oh! let us now unite in one, Let friendship rivet the decree, Nor bigots sever Pat and Me!!!" Two discomfited 'bigots' depart on the left; one is a gouty parson using a crutch, with a 'Petition against Concession' hanging from his pocket, cf. British Museum Satires No. 15661, &c. The other is a Catholic bishop in robe and mitre. They say: 'It's time for us to be off.' Above their heads flies a figure of Discord, her hair consisting of snakes which spit flame towards J. B. "Heading to a printed broadside. The King, on a dais, sits at a table between Eldon and Castlereagh, with Liverpool (?) under the table (from fear). All are terrified at the Bill, a creature, surrounded by clouds, with stick-like limbs, supported on broken crutches and a body formed of a rolled document: 'Bill of Pains and Penalties'. The apparition interrupts a Cabinet meeting, only three Ministers are depicted, others being mentioned; the King departs to Windsor to escape the Ghost, which has addressed them. The thirteenth and sixteenth of nineteen verses: Two crutches supported its figure so drear, Two props almost broken in pieces; And as the wan spectre advanced to them near, They saw one inscribed "Ministerial fear," On the other was, "Royal Caprices." "In a room at the Pavilion Prince Leopold is introduced to Princess Charlotte, a bashful girl holding a skipping-rope in her gloved hands. She is pushed forward by Queen Charlotte (right), lean, ugly, and wearing court dress with a tiara. The Queen holds a large snuff-box inscribed 'Strasbo[urg]' (see British Museum Satires No. 12066) and says: "Go along Scape grace speak kindly to him." The Regent in the doorway on the extreme left propels the prince forward with the end of a crutch, using the other as a support to his gouty left leg. He says: "Courage Man! don't be bashfull!" A garter inscribed 'Honi soit' holds up the bulky covering of his gouty leg. Prince Leopold wears a braided and fur-bordered hussar tunic with tight pantaloons and spurred Hessian boots. His left hand is on the hilt of a large sabre, and he holds his heavily plumed and tasselled shako before his face. He says: "Madam I have no money, but I'm of the right breed, true German, an blood Royal." The Princess answers: "I had rather you was English! but a German husband is better than none." Both stand with flexed knees and lowered eyes. Behind Princess Charlotte is a much-festooned window looking on to the sea. Dragons dominate the decorations of the room, and, as in British Museum Satires No. 12754, the Regent's crutches. They support the curtains, a window-seat, and a console-table (right) where a large china mandarin sits with his back reflected in a wall-mirror; below it is a large Chinese jar.
