"Mrs. Clarke's house is on the right. A military officer (Wardle) wrapped in a cloak slips a purse into the hand of a meretricious young woman at the door, with a belt inscribed Favorit. Mrs. Clarke, her breast much exposed, leans from a window to look down at him. Two other men look from other windows. Above the door is a lantern inscribed: Now Exhibiting Wonders upon Wonders or Mrs Clarkes Puppet Show Which has given satisn to Po[ ? pulace] and Prince. Below this is a board: All the World's a Stage and Men and Women merely Players-- some play the upper some the under part, but chief Play that--most foreign to their heart. On the door: Knock and you shall Enter. On the wall (by Mrs. Clarke) is a sign for "Globe Fire Insurance". On the right the Duke of York walks away from the house; he wears a mitre and carries a crosier; a bishop's robe, on which are the words "Men have their Entrances & their Exits". Next to him walks an elderly lawyer (Adam) and a fat parson (O'Meara) hurries after him. Facing Mrs. Clarke's house is a row of houses: Prospect Row; old women, Maiden Ladies, watch from upper windows, as does an old man with a telescope who puts a grotesque head out of an attic window inscribed Peeping Toms Observatory. He says: O the Devil choak her he's Waddling in as Im a prying Croaker. Two cats fight on the roof; words issue from one of them: "Come what come may the Cat will mew. The Dog will have his day"."--British Museum online catalogue

"Wardle stands in a bedroom addressing a crowd in the street below through an open sash-window flush with the floor. Behind him stands Mrs. Clarke (left), with arms outstretched, pointing at Wardle, and declaiming: "And Clarke said unto Felix. Thou art the Man- behold the Furniture! and Felix Trembled". Wardle, fashionably dressed and wearing Hessian boots, stands with clasped hands and flexed knees. He says: "Good People of the United Kingdom suspend your judgement for the present till I get this woman placed in the pillory-I never did any thing naughty with her no more than the child unborn-it was all for the good of my Country I assure you I am as firm a patriot as ever purchased a convex Mirror, or a red turkey Carpet". The heads and shoulders of the proletarian and much amused spectators are closely grouped on the extreme right, with a background of town houses. Behind Mrs. Clarke is a draped dressing-table on which stands a bottle of 'Ratifie' and glasses. The curtains of the bed form a background (left)."--British Museum online catalogue

"Mrs. Clarke stands between Wardle and Wright, arms akimbo, an impudent and alluring virago. Wardle turns his head from her to speak to General Clavering, who stands on the extreme left. Clavering, in regimentals, his cocked hat poised absurdly on the top of his head, stands glaring angrily at Mrs. Clarke; he says: I intend to commence an Action against her for obtaining Mony under false pretences in the case of French's Levy -- I'll teach her to send Gentlemen to Newgate. Wardle, in civilian dress, answers: Leave her to me Ill touch her up in the Furniture Business. Mrs. Clarke says: I dont care a fig for any of you -- and as to you Mr Furniture Monger [Wardle]--ll be before hand with you. Wright, the upholsterer, stands behind her (right); he looks to the left scowling, and says: Thats a good girl follow him up--ll back you Ill let him know who's Wright and whose Wrong. If I dont enter an action against him I am no Upholsterer. On the extreme right and in profile to the left, stands Serjeant Best, in wig and gown, holding a large Brief, with turn over at the bottom of the first page. He looks slyly towards all four, saying, That's right my good Friends it is All for the Best."--British Museum online catalogue
