Abstract:
"A crowded fair-ground, with many seen combining realism with a fantastic survey of the international situation. The are spectators and attractions in the foreground, on the ground-level backed by adjacent and competing platforms, all with performers, placards, and flags On the ground on the extreme left. in front of a notice: 'German Sour Crout with French Sauce', a waiter hurries with a steaming dish towards Germans at a table who are hideously guzzling sauer kraut as in British Museum Satires No. 10170. Behind are the backs of spectators gazing up at a platform, on the extreme left., on which a Russian displays a bear on its hind-legs, padlocked to a post inscribed 'French Influence'. The Russian, holding out a sheaf of papers, blows a trumpet with an attached banner decorated with the Russian eagle. Behind is a back-cloth inscribed: 'Russian Booth - . This day will be presented the Comedy of The Double Dealer [by Congreve] to which will be added a new Burletta called The Bear in Leading Strings - The Music principally French' [see British Museum Satires No. 10750, &c.]. Next are three narrow platforms close together: a zany wearing a conical cap, shouts to the audience below. His placard announces: "Danish Booth - The English Fleet [comic opera by T. Dibdin, 1805] and The Devil to Pay" [opera by Coffey, 1730]. Below the script a naval engagement in depicted. Next, a pierrot, wearing a fool's cap, beats a drum, before a placard: 'Sweedish Booth - Blind Bargain [comedy by Frederick Reynolds, 1805] and Hob in the Well' ['Flora; or, Hob in the Well' by Hippisley, 1730]. A Punch-like man stands in front of the 'Westphalia Booth - Wife and no Wife [unacted farce by Coffey, 1732] with Jerry Sneak [in Foote's 'Mayor of Garratt', 1763] in his Glory'. All three booths fly their national flag, except the last, on which there is a ham inscribed 'Venison', see BMSat 10759. The booths recede in perspective and from left. to r., a pendant to similar booths on the opposite side. Between them, facing the spectator, is the central and largest: 'The Best - Booth in the Fair Iohn Bull and Company - The Englishman's Fire Side, and The Wooden Warn of Old England, Principal Characters by Joh Bull, Paddy Bull, Ben Block &c.' This is surmounted by the Royal Arms and British flag. On the little stage Britannia stands, holding her spear and pointing to a group seated round a punch-bowl: John Bull, a fat 'cit' smoking a long pipe, Erin with her harp, a fat Welshman with a leek in his hat, and a lank Scot in Highland dress; the last three are drinking. The toast is on a paper below the punch-bowl: 'Old England for ever the land Boys we live in'. Beside Britannia is her lion, rampantly supporting her shield. The space under the platform (boarded upat the other booths) is an eating-place: men (in shadow) guzzling hard, while a cook triumphantly brings in a huge sirloin. "Fox as Abdallah, captain of the thieves, leads his band towards the treasure-cave; he stands in profile to the right., facing the cave where a Chancellor's gown and a Chief Justice's gown are suspended. On a table decorated with the Royal Arms are three coronets; in front of it, two sacks of 'Cash', a mace, large rolls of parchment inscribed 'Places' and 'Pensions'. The thieves all wear jewelled turbans with aigrettes, Turkisn trousers tucked into boots, zouave jackets edged with fur over short sleeves. Each holds a sabre. Fox exclaims "Open Sesame." The thieves are crowded together behind Fox and Sheridan, who points to the cave, turning round to say: "Glorious spoils comrades in this Cavern of Ours, surely there is enoug to satisfy us all, I long to lead a sober steady Life." The other thieves are not characterized, and it is not clear to which speaker the different speeches belong. Behind and between Sheridan and Fox is Sidmouth saying: "Blister me [cf. BMSat 9849] if I dont think my exploits deserve that roll of Parchment." Windham (regarded as a war-monger, cf. BMSat 9871), says: "I should like a little cutting and slashing befor I left off Buisiness!" The Marquis of Buckingham, indicated by spectacles, says: "If the Cady will but make me a Viceroy ill give up this buisiness at once." This speech is also connected with Bedford's profile Next the head of the latter is that of the tall Moira. Erskine (1.) says: "I'll take the black gown trim'd with gold, and the valuble [the mace] that belongs to it. for my share". An unappropriated speech must belong to Ellenborough (not discoverable): "Well I'll take the one with the Fur upon it, and some thing to make up for the want of Gold trimming." Others of the band are little Lord Henry Petty looking up at Sheridan and the bulky Grenville with his sabre resting on his shoulder. "George IV, crowned, and with orb and sceptre, sits on a coronation chair in Westminster Abbey (right). The Archbishop, well characterized, stands beside him, holding his mitre, his right hand on the chair. On the King's right hand stands Londonderry (Castlereagh) in Garter robes; other peers stand behind him. All watch the antics of Canning, dressed in parti-coloured clothes as a merry-andrew or buffoon. He kneels on the dais at the King's feet, arms flung wide; at his feet is a high-crowned hat with a peacock's feather; on the back of his tunic are the letters M P and P C. He declaims: The delight of the Nation at the Celebration of your Majesty's Coronation, the Exultation throughout the Creation exceeds all Imagination. the Expectation to which the Anticipation of this Consumation has given occasion is beyond Contemplation; we offer the Oblation of our Congratulation, without Hesitation or Trepidation; no Tribulation can effect a Cessation of the Sensation which pervades every Station; no Situation in whatever Deprivation will utter an Execration for the Association are in Preparation to effect an Extirpation of all Defamation. We hope the Expectation of a Decollation will produce Annihilation of all Deviation from strict Regulation; we submit to Subjugation without Hesitation, and we offer our Oration with gratefull Adoration upon this Jollification. The King composedly touches (or kicks) Canning's chin with his toe. Peeresses stand in a gallery across the north transept, holding their coronets. "Three volunteers or militiamen, three-quarter length figures, exult at the head of Bonaparte which one of them (right) holds up on a pitchfork, saying, "Here he is Exalted my Lads 24 Hours after Landing." The head is in profile to the left, the sharp well-cut features contrast with those of the chubby yokels. The centre figure, holding out his hat, says, turning to the left: "Why Harkee, d'ye zee, I never liked Soldiering afore, but some how or other when I though [sic] of our Sal the bearns, the poor pigs, the Cows and the Geese, why I could have killed the whole Army my own Self." He wears a smock with the crossed straps of a cartouche-box. The third man (left) in regimentals, but round-shouldered and unsoldierly, says: "Dang my Buttons if that beant the Head of that Rogue Boney - I told our Squire this Morning, what do you think say's I the Lads of our Village can't cut up a Regiment of them French Mounsheers, and as soon as the Lasses had given us a Kiss for good luck I could have sworn we should do it and so we have." All three have hats turned up with favours and oak-twigs, the favours being inscribed respectively (left to right): 'Hearts of Oak'; 'Britons never will be Slaves', and 'We'll fight and We'll Conquer again and again'. In the spaces between these foreground figures is seen a distant encounter between English horse and foot and French invaders, who are being driven into the sea, on which are flat-bottomed boats, all on a very small scale. Two women search French corpses; one says: "why this is poor finding I have emtied the pocketts of a score and only found one head of garlic 9 onions & a parcel of pill Boxes." Cf. "The White Horse of Hanover (the King) kicks violently; he has thrown off members of the Ministry who lie under his heels, while Howick and Grenville are about to fall from the saddle; the reins have broken. On the horse's shoulder is the star of the Garter. Grenville, on the hind-quarters, his peer's robe floating behind him, holds the (torn) 'Catholic Bil[l]', while he clutches the slipping Howick. In the middle distance (l.) John Bull, a yokel in a smock, watches delightedly, saying, "Dang it! he has kicked um off at last zure enough! Aye, Aye, it was that cursed Catholic Bill tickled his rightump and set him a Kicking." Sidmouth lies in front of the animal, holding up his arm; he clutches a clyster-pipe (cf. BMSat 9849). The others (l. to r.) are Petty and Erskine in their gowns; the former clutches Howick's r. ankle, dragging him down; the latter sits on a cushion inscribed '4.000 Pr Anm' [see BMSat 10714.] He says: "I've had a cursed short ride! and if it had not been for this little cushion I should have a confounded thump on my Rump." Ellenborough tries to protect his head from the horse's heels. Sheridan, as Harlequin (see BMSat 9916), sprawls on the ground, bleeding at the nose. Moira runs off, as does Temple, also with a bleeding nose; he says: "Curse that Stone I've broke my Nose against it." Before him is a large piece of 'Portland Stone' [see BMSat 10718, &c]; behind him is his spectacled father, Buckingham.
