Abstract:
"The interior of an apothecary's room: jars on shelves; a counter with drawers, pestle and mortar, flasks, &c. A bust of Galen stands on the lintel of the door (right). An alarmed undergraduate in cap and gown stands clasping his stomach. The doctor faces him triumphantly, with raised arms and holding a pill-box. His man, who wears an apron, walks off with a large box inscribed 'Anti-Fibbibus'. The (prose) inscription below the title relates that a 'College Wag' called on a 'travelling Empiric' and asked to be cured of a bad memory, and a habit of lying. He is cured by the 'gilded pill called - Pillula Memoria - Anti Fibbibus!!' The youth complains that he is poisoned with Asafœtida, the doctor answers that he speaks the truth and will never forget the medicine, so is cured."--British Museum online catalogue

A fat divine stumbles backward as dogs fight in the foreground. A seller at right is alarmed as he threatens to fall onto her table. "The College Gate": Three men ride off in different directions after coming through a gate with square brick pillars surmounted by stone vases. Behind the left rider walks a fat divine wearing an academic cap. McCowan’s time as superintendent of the Phoenix Indian School in Phoenix, Arizona, and efforts creating the “Model Indian School” exhibit as part of the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in Saint Louis, Missouri, 1894-1904 and Circa 118 photographs in 2 photograph albums show students of the Phoenix Indian School. A scrapbook with photographs, press releases, and newspaper clippings related to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition documents McCowan’s exhibit and the work completed by students of the Chilocco Indian School in Oklahoma. Included is a draft of a speech by McCowan regarding Indigenous education, as well as “Asakeeta” and “A Tale of the Cataract” (essays likely relayed to McCowan by a Samuel Beecher).

Samuel M. McCowan (1863-1924) was superintendent of the Fort Mojave Industrial School from 1890 to 1896 and Phoenix Indian School from 1897 to 1902 (both in Arizona), as well as the Chilocco Indian School in Oklahoma after 1902.
