"George IV, dressed as a magician, rises from the throne (right) to give a wooden sword to Canning, who is dressed as Harlequin. A clown (intended for Melville) turns his back on Canning and the King, to run off, registering anger and alarm. Wellington stands fiercely, with legs astride, both arms raised, holding his sword; he wears uniform with boots and cocked hat. On the left Eldon and Westmorland stand together, with flexed knees, registering senile dismay. The latter, dressed as Pantaloon, drops his crutch. The King, in a robe bordered with symbols (serpents, &c), has the curled wig and whiskers which he had discarded (cf. British Museum Satires No. 14637). He chants: Harlequin! the Gods above have now decreed That thou and all thy measures shall succeed. Fear not old El--n, nor that Pantaloon, West----d, the bold Duke, nor the Scotch Clown. George IV and three of his ministers (Castlereagh, Liverpool, and Wellington) struggle to pull on a rope tied a mortar, which is shaped like a fantastical winged creature. Their targets are apparently the "Satirists" in the sky in the upper right, who wield pens and banners; an additional satirist, with the beaked face of a bird, is seen in the sky in the upper left, sitting on a wheeled hobby horse and ready to shoot an arrow inscribed 'Cradle Hymn" from a bow. Additional depicted figures included Gifford, wearing a wig and gown and holding a scourge; Sidmouth, using a clyster pipe to shoot at the satirists in the sky; and Canning, holding a cudgel above his head, ready to strike a fleeing Burdett. Following behind the mortar are several men, one wearing a liberty cap, two of them holding a banner inscribed "Life and amours of Madam Hunn[?]" between them. A monkey in military uniform rides a donkey towards the left edge of the design, exclaiming "Clear the way for his most gracious Majesty!" "The House of Lords, as arranged for the Bill of Pains and Penalties, see British Museum Satires No. 13825, is seen from the right, so that the angle of the left and end walls form the centre of the design, the throne being on the right. The peers are crowded together to watch the entry of the Queen, complacently seated on a black ram with the head of Bergami; the animal wears two orders, and from its neck hangs a disc inscribed 'Santa Carolina', see British Museum Satires No. 13810. Immediately behind her walks Alderman Wood, wearing his furred gown and holding a decanter. Behind him, and in the foreground, marches Brougham, followed by Denman and Lushington. Her other followers hold long staves. A plebeian fellow in a red gown just behind the barristers may be Fellowes, her chaplain. A woman and a fashionably dressed man walking together are probably Lady Anne Hamilton and Keppel Craven, the Queen's Vice-Chancellor. From the crowd of her supporters emerges a pole supporting a cap of Liberty, and a placard: 'May our Wives be like Her' (which is against pictures of the allegations of the 'trial', see below). In the foreground (left) a ragged Savoyard sings, turning the handle of an orgue de barbarie slung from his neck. On the woolsack, in front of the peers, sits Eldon, saying "Go and Sin no more" (words quoted by Denman in his speech for the defence). On his right stands Grey, hands crossed on his breast, bowing towards the ram. Behind the Chancellor stands a peer, saying, "Innocent as our Wives." On Eldon's left stands a tall man, wearing the ribbon of St. Patrick. On the end of a bench in the right foreground sits a peer who has some resemblance to Liverpool. Behind him stands a man resembling Lord Holland. Among a crowd on the steps of the throne is Wellington. From closely seated peers (left) rises the word 'Guiltless'. In the right foreground, and screening himself by a cloth, a crouching incendiary, resembling Cobbett, holds a torch to a pile of papers. These are Addresses, with, at the base, 'Gunpowder Treason'. The other inscriptions are 'London Address', 'Leeds Address', 'Manchester Address'. The gallery (left) is crowded with spectators; against it and above the heads of those on the floor of the House is a medley of canvasses, supported on poles; on these incidents from the evidence against the Queen are depicted. [1] A Turk, Mahomet, dances (see British Museum Satires No. 13929). [2] The Princess and Bergami sit amorously together. [3] Bergami helps the Princess to dress as the Muse of History (see British Museum Satires No. 13890, &c.). [4] Bergami bathes the Princess (see British Museum Satires No. 13819, &c.). [5] Bergami and the Princess in a carriage (see British Museum Satires No. 13820). [6] The pair look from the tent on the polacca at a helmsman (see British Museum Satires No. 13818, &c.). [7] They inspect statues of Adam and Eve in a grotto ('Parl. Deb.', N.S. ii. 1094). [8] They sit together on the deck of the polacca ('ibid.', pp. 895, 920). [9] Seated under a canopy they are rowed on Lake Como. [10] The Princess dances a pas seul. Enclosed in an oval below the title are the Queen's words: "Here I am Riding on a Black Ram Like a w-e as I am, . . . Therefore I pray you Mr Steward let me have my C-n again." (By the custom of certain manors a widow who, through unchastity, had lost her freebench, or life interest in her husband's copyhold, could recover it by coming into the court on a ram, and reciting the above words ('crown' replacing the 'land' of the original), given in full in 'The Spectator' for 1 Nov. 1714.) "Apparently an imitation (better drawn) of British Museum Satires No. 15716. Wellington drives (left to right) four galloping horses, each with a human head. The leaders are Lyndhurst (piebald) and Scarlett (black), both wearing legal wigs; the wheelers Brougham, also in his wig, and Burdett. He flicks his lash over the leaders, saying, 'Kim up Motley--keep together odd Rat [Lyndhurst] ye--or I'll lay it into ye!!' The King's (pleased) face is seen through the coach window; he says: 'I say Arthur, you are the Man Wot can make'm go, if you like!!' The guard is Lady Conyngham: she stands up, blowing her horn. She wears a guard's greatcoat and satchel over her dress and holds a blunderbuss. The coach is the 'Windsor Castle'; 'Wellington & Co.'; 'G R 1829'. It has just passed and overturned a two-wheeled ass-cart, the ass falling on its head, the driver, Eldon, sprawling on the ground. In the cart, which is inscribed 'John Eldon Rubbish Carter' [see British Museum Satires No. 15700, &c], are big bundles of 'Anti-Catholic Petetions' [see British Museum Satires No. 15661, &c.]. Standing behind and below the guard's dickey is Peel as 'cad', or conductor; he thumbs his nose at Eldon, saying, 'There's a Guard for the Sovereign eh!!!' "Heading to a printed broadside. Four well-dressed men hold open a large bag, resting on the ground, in which stands a fifth, in profile to the right, who says indignantly to one of the openers: "Oh here you are--now for the Truth, the whole Truth & nothing but the Truth, by whose authority did you make Tools of the Clergy, to create divesions [sic] among their Parishione's [sic], & become sources of discord instead of Peace Makers." The other draws back disconcerted, answering: "Indeed it was not my master but the Pit Club, to whom the Nation is so much indebted." The first speaker rejoins: "Yes to whome the Nation is indebted 9 Hundred Millions." A slanting blast issues from the bag to the left, carrying into the air Wellington astride a cannon, who turns round to look anxiously down at the bag, and is followed by a cannon supported on clerical arms and legs and ridden by a bishop. The latter says: "my Minor Cannon are of little use." A little man (? Canning) runs in the blast, below Wellington. Smoke surrounds the bag. The text is the speech of Mr. Marsh at the Hampshire meeting on 12 Jan., when petitions to both Houses in favour of the Queen were resolved on. The plate illustrates a passage from the facetious printed speech: 'Besides the Ultras had a terrible weight of metal for the fight. They could muster all the great guns from Portsmouth; and if these did not do execution enough, they had at hand the little canons of Winchester.'"--British Museum online catalog
