In Latin and French., Script: Two hands can be distinguished: ff. 1r-6v and 15r-63r are written in a small, even batarde; ff. 7r-14v in a rounded gothic script showing some batarde characteristics. Folios 7-14 may have been added later, judging by the difference in the style and color of the miniatures and their placement on the page. Prayers added on ff. 63v-64v in batarde, early 16th century., Sixteen camaieu-gris miniatures by three artists, in tondo format, with gold frames inscribed in white capitals. The miniatures on ff. 15v and 19v are by the leading artist; the remainder are by a competent assistant (with the exception of ff. 7v, 8r, 9r, and 10r, which are of inferior quality). 4-, 3-, 2-, and 1-line initials, grey with gold highlights, on a black ground, some with leaves and dots in gold. On ff. 7r-14v the letters are composed of leaf forms. Ribbon line-fillers, geometric and leaf forms, gold, grey, and white on black. Rubrics in pale red. Calendar has KL monogram as 2-line initials, month and dates in red; feasts in blue, major feasts in red., The black ink of the initials has run on many pages, and has sometimes adhered to the opposite pages., and Binding: 18th-19th centuries. Brown goatskin gold-tooled, silver fastenings. On the spine, flowers and the words "Heur en Latin. MSS. S. Velin en Min."

In Latin., Script: Written by a single scribe in Southern Gothica Textualis Libraria (Rotunda), especially marked by the use of two forms of d (Uncial and Half-Uncial)., Headings in red. The decoration consists of (1) alternately gold and blue flourished initials, 1 line, within the text and in the Litany; the penwork is mauve with the gold initials, red with the blue ones; (2) dentelle initials, 2 lines, also used for "KL" in the Calendar; (3) decorated foliate initials, 5 lines, with full "Ferrarese" borders, painted at the beginning of the Hours from Lauds to Compline in the Hours of the Virgin; (4) large historiated initials, mostly 7 lines, at the opening of the various sections: f. 13r (Hours of the Virgin), Virgin with Child, full border with in its lower section a shield held by two putti; f. 93r (Penitential Psalms), King David in prayer, full border; f. 117v (Hours of the Cross), the Cross on a hill, two-margins border; f. 122r (Hours of the Holy Spirit), the Holy Spirit as a dove, two-margins border; f. 126r (Mass of the Virgin), a lily, full border., and Binding: Eighteenth century (?). Parchment checkered with green-gold motifs. On the spine red title-label with gold-tooled inscription "Manuscrit du XIIIe siecle".

In Latin and French., Script: Written in liturgical gothic bookhand in two sizes, by a single scribe. Prayers (ff. 1r-2v, 49r-v, 101r-103r) added in an informal batarde script, apparently by a single person., The manuscript originally contained the full complement of miniatures; their removal (following ff. 8, 13, 22, 33, 37, 39, 41, 43, 45, 49, 61, 64, and 87) is indicated by stubs, missing bifolios and breaks in the text. The remaining decoration consists of compartmentalized borders typical of late 15th-century Rouen manuscripts. One full border (f. 3r) in red bounding lines with pink and blue acanthus leaves on a gold ground, alternating with flowers and strawberries on parchment ground, filled in with black and gold dots; three borders (ff. 4r, 6r, 7r) in outer margin only. 3/4 band borders (with 5- and 4- line initials); single bands in outer margin (with 2-line initials); additional small bands occur when 2-line initial is on a recto. Borders are traced whenever they occur on recto and verso of same leaf; all with blue and gold acanthus leaves, flowers on parchment ground, filler as for full border. Many pages have no border. Initials, 5-, 4-, 2-, and 1-line, gold, on blue and red grounds with white highlights; 4-line initials, blue on a gold ground, filled with red and blue trilobe leaves in lattices; the 2-line initials occasionally with a narrow border in inner margin with flowers, black hair-spray, and gold dots (red bounding lines). Ribbon and quatrelobe line-fillers in gold, blue, and red, highlighted in white. Rubrics in orange-tinted red. Calendar has months, dates, and important feasts in gold; other feasts alternately in blue and red. Most spaces for initials within the added prayers have not been filled., and Binding: Seventeenth century. Dark red goatskin, gold-tooled, with a smooth spine.

In Latin., Script: probably copied by two hands, both writing Northern Gothica Textualis Formata: A copied the Calendar, B all the rest in a more formal script in two sizes, except ff. 102r-103r, which are in a different hand. Rich decoration. Rubrics in gold. Calendar written in blue and gold. Majuscules stroked in yellow. Line fillers in gold and colour. Numerous 1-line versals (dentelle initials). 2-line foliate initials with marginal extensions, or with a one-margin gold and colour foliate bar border, extending into the upper and lower margins; some of them contain a human face, a flower or a geometrical design. 6-or 7-line historiated initials, always accompanied by a full gold and colour foliate bar border. Several marginal portraits of a woman (ff. 21r and 83r) are probably of the original owner., Elaborate illuminated miniatures, decorating a calendar, Short Hours of the Cross, Hours of the Virgin, Penitential Psalms, and the Office of the Dead. The manuscript also includes the beginning of the Gospel according to John, a litany, and petitions., and Binding: 20th century binding by Douglas Cockerell (1926): dark red morocco over pasteboard. Spine with five raised bands, with gold-tooled title “HORAE BEATAE / MARIAE VIRGINIS // MS. SAEC. XIV”. Green silk endbands. Two leather straps with silver clasps and catches engraved with the Hornby crest.

In Dutch., Script: Written in gothic bookhand., Four 9- or 8-line historiated initials, blue with white highlights or spiralling acanthus in white and gold, against cusped grounds, with penwork floral sprays in border, tinted red, blue and yellow. Fourteen 5-line initials for the Hours, blue, with leaves in white, filled with flowers or fruit, against gold grounds, square with cusps at corners: each with a three-quarter border, a red, blue and gold bar, some with dragon-head terminals, in outer margin; foliage with flowers, red, blue, green, purple and pink, and animals surrounded by brown and black hair-spray and gold dots. 4 inserted miniatures probably date ca. 1475-85 and differ in style from the manuscript to which they were added. The miniature on f. 55v Angels with Monstrance (Hours of the Eucharist) and most of the overpainted borders around miniatures and pages with historiated initials probably date from ca. 1500-10. The borders consist of pink and/or gold arched frames, cusped in black, with full borders, some compartmentalized, pink, blue and/or gold, with various combinations of gold curling acanthus, red, blue, and green flowers, insects and jewels; one (f. 149v) a damask pattern with jewels and flowers in roundels., Many small initials in red or blue with flourishing in blue or red, often extending the length of the written space. 1-line initials alternating red and blue. Rubrics throughout., and Binding: Seventeenth century. Gold-tooled, green goatskin with a red label and a spine decorated "a la grotesque," possibly by one of the Padeloups, a family active in Paris from ca. 1654 to 1800. Traces of original sewing and paste in gutter and on contemporary parchment flyleaves. Gilt edges.

Eleven 5- to 4-line initials (ff. 139v, 158v, 161r, 162r, 163r, 163v, 164r, 165v, 168r, 169v, 176v), gold, edged in black against a cusped ground, quartered in blue and pink, with white highlights and floral hair-spray. 3-line initials, blue with red penwork throughout. In Latin., Script: Written in batarde script., Miniatures and an extensive cycle of border vignettes by Jean and Jacquelin Montlucon who were active in Bourges between 1477 and 1492. The calendar pages are framed by gilt columns and entablatures in the antique manner with the occupations of the month and signs of the zodiac in the outer margin and a Creation cycle in the lower margin. Eleven half-page miniatures framed in magenta and gold with cusping at the top; fanciful architectural bases, surrounded by simulated grey-black marble with joined wings and foliage branches in gold. Twenty-three miniatures, 8-lines in height, in magenta and gold frames, each with a full border of flowers and acanthus, birds and grotesques on compartmented gold and white grounds. Text pages with full borders: columns in inner margin; panels with masks, shields, garlands, and wings in upper margin; flowers and acanthus, as above, in outer margin; and, in the lower margin, one of the fullest known cycles devoted to the wild man (sometimes extended to include outer margin as well). Other manuscripts from the same shop, the Monypenny Hours and Grenoble Bibliotheque Municipale MS 1011, also contain extensive cycles of wild-man imagery; the artists Jean and Jacquelin de Montlucon lived in Bourges in a house "at the sign of the Wild Man.", 5- and 4-line initials with leafy branches, gold with fruits, flowers, profile heads on pink or mauve grounds. 2- and 1-line initials, line-endings, and KL monograms in the same style. Rubrics in red. Calendar entries alternate red and blue. F. i verso added in 16th century: the arms of Gian Francesco di Montegnacco in a frame closely modelled on the decoration of the calendar pages., and Binding: Nineteenth century. Initials infilled with intertwining vines, often on gold ground, sometimes with small animals; modest use of gold dots inside rectangular grounds and borders. 1-line initials of blue with red penwork with blue dots and of gold with blue penwork and red dots. Line-fillers in combinations of red, blue and gold (various linear and flower designs)., and Binding: Nineteenth century. Bound in a piece of blind-tooled brown calf, once part of a 17th-18th century binding. Front pastedown and flyleaf from a Bible concordance, version 3 (France, ca. 1300). Back pastedown from 15th-century antiphonal, with musical notation, containing a portion of the office for Nicolas (6 Dec.).
