Carleton E. Watkins was a San Francisco photographer who worked both with official surveys and independently to photograph California, Nevada and Utah. In 1867 he served with Clarence King as the official photographer to the California Geological Survey, and in 1870 was the official photographer for King's Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel., Manuscript or letterpress captions on mounts, some with numbers. Additional titles supplied, when necessary, in brackets on mount versos., and Accompanied by a box list.

Corps of Engineers Survey of the 40th Parallel, Carleton Watkins traveled independently to Nevada, arriving in Comstock in 1875. He photographed the mining towns of Gold Hill and Virginia City in 1875-1876.

The last several pages of the album are devoted to unidentified cartes-de-visite portraits. The clippings follow the mining career and social activities of James Whitlatch through the 1900s

Included with the photographs are newspaper clippings, magazine articles, trade advertisements, and one drawing of Eugene Whitlatch. A Montana Society of New York program is also included in the scrapbook, in which the name Elijah Woodward is written. and Accompanied by a list of photographs.
