He is seated before an easel in mid-stroke painting the image of John Wilkes holding the Cap of Liberty; he holds a paint brush and palette in his hands as he turns to talk to a gentleman leaning against the artist's chair (right foreground). Under the chair is Hogarth's dog Trump. In the background is a caricature of Hogarth's "Sigismunda" being a grotesque skiethc of Mrs. Hogarth and with an indecent suggestion
