- Abstract:
- After March 13, 1872, many of the letters are addressed to his successor, T. D. Odeneal and Alfred B. Meacham's correspondence deals with the routine work of the superintendent of Indian affairs, government policy and administration, the Indian wars, and his own removal from office. The chief correspondents are the Commissioners of Indian Affairs in Washington and the Oregon Indian agents. Letters from these officials after March 13, 1872, are addressed to Meacham's successor, T. B. Odeneal. The 1873 correspondence concerns Meacham's work as chairman of a peace commission to the Modocs.

- Fred Benjamin Millett Correspondence is comprised of incoming letters from American and British authors dating from 1933 to 1950. The authors write in response to Millet's request for information while preparing his books: Contemporary British Literature: A Critical Survey and 232 Author-bibliographies (New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1935) and Contemporary American Authors: A Critical Survey and 219 Bio-bibliographies (New York: Harcourt, Brace, 1940). Correspondents include: Sherwood Anderson, Gordon Bottomley, John Dos Passos, Edna Ferber, F. Scott Fitzgerald, H. D., Ernest Hemingway, Langston Hughes, Robinson Jeffers, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Dorothy Parker, Ezra Pound, Katharine Susannah Prichard, Ethel Sidgwick, Wallace Stevens, Carl Van Vechten, Robert Penn Warren, Evelyn Waugh, Thornton Wilder, and William Carlos Williams. - Accompanied by typed transcripts of the letters, by an eleven-page typescript by W. H. Goetzmann and Jerry E. Patterson dated June 17, 1959, written as an introduction to the Upton letters which they had edited for publication, and a letter with enclosures from Eleanor S. Upton to Zara Powers dated January 3, 1956, regarding Upton genealogies. and Twenty-five ALS (three of which are manuscript copies) written by Barna N. Upton to his father Nehemiah, his brother Elias, his sister Susan, and other family members and friends, dating from July 7, 1842 to August 7, 1847. With the exception of his first letter, which was written to his family while he was working as a farmhand in Williamsburg, Massachusetts, Upton's letters document his experiences as a soldier in Company E of the 3rd Regiment U.S. Infantry before and during the Mexican War. The letters describe his enlistment in the army and camp life on Governors Island, New York, early in 1845; his voyage from New York to New Orleans that spring; camp life at Fort Jesup, Louisiana, Corpus Christi, Texas, Matamoros, Camargo, Veracruz, and Jalapa, Mexico; and battles in which he fought including Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma, Monterey, and Cerro Gordo. His last letter was written from Puebla as he prepared to march to Mexico City.

- Upton was born on July 26, 1820, the eldest son of Nehemiah Newhall Upton, a farmer and clothier of Charlemont, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1845, fought in the Mexican War, and died in Mexico City on October 15, 1847 of wounds he received at a battle outside the city.

- Manuscript and typescript carbon letters, clippings and other documents relating to the Massacre at Sand Creek, Colorado. Included in the papers is a holograph manuscript draft of a letter to the editor of the New York Times dated July 26, 1897, in which Tappan corrects statements made in the newspaper regarding the massacre; an undated typescript carbon letter to an unidentified recipient in which Tappan discusses the military commission that investigated the massacre; a photocopy of a notarized statement dated June 1, 1957, by Frank M. Wynkoop which describes a meeting with the commander of the Sand Creek troops, Colonel John M. Chivington; a photocopy of a broadside entitled The Indian Question; a clipping of Tappan's letter to the editor of the New York Tribune dated September 16, 1867, regarding the "origins of the Indian War"; and newspaper clippings relating to the Massacre and Tappan obituary notices.
- Description:
- Born in 1831 in Manchester, Massachusetts, Tappan went to Kansas in 1854 and joined the movement to make Kansas a free state. In 1860, after holding various state offices in Kansas, he moved to Colorado and commanded the First Colorado Cavalry Regiment. Tappan presided over the first investigation of the Sand Creek Massacre in which hundreds of surrendered and partially disarmed Cheyenne and Arapaho were killed in a surprise attack by troops under the command of Colonel John M. Chivington in 1864. After attaining the rank of colonel in 1865, he was mustered out of the Army and appointed a member of the United States Indian Peace Commission. He promoted emigration to Oregon while employed by the Oregon Steamship and Railroad Company, and was superintendent of the Nebraska Indian Industrial School. He was a correspondent to major newspapers throughout the United States, and wrote frequently on American Indian human rights issues. He died in Washington, D.C. in 1913.

- Kingerly's letters to his parents and friends describe the 1852 journey from Illinois to California by way of Iowa, Kanesville, the Platte and Sweetwater, Kinney's and Hudspeth's Cut-offs, the Shasta and Nobles Pass route, Sierra Nevadas, and Shasta City. The letters note camping places, the cost of ferriage and food, encounters with Indians, sickness, and deaths. Kingerly traveled with a group from Pine Creek, Ogle County, Illinois. One letter describes storekeeping in Shasta City.
