- Abstract:
- After March 13, 1872, many of the letters are addressed to his successor, T. D. Odeneal and Alfred B. Meacham's correspondence deals with the routine work of the superintendent of Indian affairs, government policy and administration, the Indian wars, and his own removal from office. The chief correspondents are the Commissioners of Indian Affairs in Washington and the Oregon Indian agents. Letters from these officials after March 13, 1872, are addressed to Meacham's successor, T. B. Odeneal. The 1873 correspondence concerns Meacham's work as chairman of a peace commission to the Modocs.

- Correspondence, photographs, and an incomplete catalog raisonné related to the work of artist Charles Demuth, which Richard W. C. Weyand collected and compiled from 1940 to 1955, as well as auction catalogs related to Weyand's estate, 1957-1976. Correspondence in the collection documents artwork created by Demuth and owned by different persons and institutions, while circa 125 photographs document work created by Demuth, circa 1906-1934.

- Charles Demuth (1883-1935) was an American watercolor artist who turned to oils late in his career and developed a modern art movement known as Precisionism., Folios 203, 207, 209-10, 213, 216, 218, 220, 227-229, 244, 250-260, 272-276, 287-289, 291-292, and 298 are missing., Gift of Ann Grether Hill, 1988., and Richard W. C. Weyand (1905-1956), born Richard Conklin Weyand, was the son of Edwin Stanton Weyand (1863-1913) and Wilhelmina Thompson Weyand (1873-1943). He had two sisters, Dorothy Adams Weyand Grether (1897-1982) and Louise Victoria Weyand White (1899-1924), as well as two brothers, Edwin Stanton Weyand (1903-1973) and William Rodgers Weyand (1908-1970). Weyand served in the United States Navy during World War II, 1942-1945. Weyand and Robert Evans Locher (1888-1956), a close friend of artist Charles Demuth, operated an antique store and lived in the former home of Demuth in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 1943-1956.

- Fred Benjamin Millett Correspondence is comprised of incoming letters from American and British authors dating from 1933 to 1950. The authors write in response to Millet's request for information while preparing his books: Contemporary British Literature: A Critical Survey and 232 Author-bibliographies (New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1935) and Contemporary American Authors: A Critical Survey and 219 Bio-bibliographies (New York: Harcourt, Brace, 1940). Correspondents include: Sherwood Anderson, Gordon Bottomley, John Dos Passos, Edna Ferber, F. Scott Fitzgerald, H. D., Ernest Hemingway, Langston Hughes, Robinson Jeffers, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Dorothy Parker, Ezra Pound, Katharine Susannah Prichard, Ethel Sidgwick, Wallace Stevens, Carl Van Vechten, Robert Penn Warren, Evelyn Waugh, Thornton Wilder, and William Carlos Williams. Evans Collection of James Baldwin is comprised of a typescript draft of Baldwin's Another Country (New York: Dial Pub., 1962) and correspondence sent from Baldwin to Mary Garin-Painter, David Adams Leeming, and Eugene Lerner dating from 1953 to 1987. In his letters Baldwin discusses his writing projects and personal life (ranging from his relationships to his experience living abroad in France and Turkey). Baldwin also reflects on his experience at the MacDowell Colony where he was in residence while working on his novel Giovanni's Room. The correspondence constitutes a window into Baldwin's creative process and life during this period.
