Binding: Eighteenth century, France. Tan, mottled sheepskin; gold-tooled spine and red label with title: "Passio/ M. S. XIII. S"., Part I: 3-line red initial, f. 1r, with penwork designs extending length of inner margin. Headings, marginalia, paragraph marks, initial strokes, in red, through f. 39r only., Script: Part I (ff. 1-48): Written in humanistic bookhand, below top line. Part II (ff. 49-77): Written by multiple scribes in different styles of humanistic bookhand., and Watermarks, in gutter: Part I: similar in design to Piccard Waage VII.261-66 and similar to Piccard Werkzeug IV.1162-63; unidentified crossed arrows and balance within a circle. Part II: similar to Piccard Waage V.378 and similar in design to Piccard Waage VII.261-66; unidentified bull's head and same unidentified balance in a circle as in Part I.

Manuscript on paper of 1) Noël de Fribois (d. 1467/1468), Abrégé des croniques de France, presented to King Charles VII of France in 1459. 2) Simon Gréban (d. ca. 1473), Epitaph for King Charles VII (1461). 3) Moral aphorisms in the form of distichs. 4) Moral aphorisms in French after the manner of the Disticha Catonis, perhaps by the same author as art. 3. 5) Catalogue of the library of Jaspar Scaeck, apparently a lawyer in northern France (Lille?). The 57 books, listed without a clear order, are almost all in French and were printed between 1534 and 1595, with one book dated 1495; they mostly were produced in Paris, Lyons, Douai and Antwerp. For each the owner gives a full transcription of the title page, reproducing its layout (exceptionnally also the colophon); for the last two items also a note on the binding.

Manuscript on parchment of Cyril of Alexandria's Glaphyra in Genesim, Books I-IV (first part of Glaphyra in Pentateuchum).
Description:
Binding: 19th or 20th century: brown morocco, both covers gold-tooled with a floral stamp, four times crosswise applied in the center. Spine with three raised bands, to which the gold-tooled leather of the 17th century binding has been pasted, with the inscription: “CIRILI / ALEXAND / OPUS / MS”. Marbled paper pastedowns., Cyril of Alexandria's Glaphyra in Genesim, Books I-IV (first part of Glaphyra in Pentateuchum). Latin translation ascribed to Iosephus.Due to the loss of two leaves (ff. 124-125) a part of the text preceding the final sentences is missing. A few 17th century annotations., and Script: copied by one hand writing Humanistica Textualis. Pale red headings, mostly not executed. Space for initials is provided, with guide letters, but initials are mostly not executed. On f. 1r a 6-line white vinestem initial with extensions in the upper and left margins; white vinestem decoration in the lower margin around a wreath, containing now a blank escutcheon. On ff. 37v (4 lines), 42r (6 lines) and 60r (4 lines) white vinestem initials of lower quality and in a different style.

Description:
2-line plain initials alternately in red and blue at the beginning of the subdivisions of the text. They are placed almost entirely in the margin and are missing ff. 17v, 28r and 33r. Guide letters, written in the space reserved for the initials, are equally often missing. On f. 1r the Prologue opens with a 4-line foliate initial in red, green and blue with two flowers on a gold background and floral extensions in the inner margin, in Lombard style; in the lower margin of the same page a painted double-headed imperial eagle in black, its two heads with a golden crown and on its chest an oval shield with the coat of arms or, three bends azure., Binding: Original Italian, undecorated blue-stained leather over beech boards. Sewn on three double leather thongs. Remnants of three clasps attached to the front board (one at the upper, one at the lower and one at the right-hand side); thin brass engraved catches on the rear cover, decorated with a floweret and the Gothic majuscule “S”. The parchment pastedowns are now detached from the boards., Collection of Bernard M. Rosenthal, Berkeley (MS 149). Purchased from Rosenthal on the Edwin J. Beinecke Fund., Parchment end leaves., Script: Copied by one hand in Humanistica Cursiva Libraria/Currens, widely spaced. The first letter after an initial is in Capitalis., and Watermark: two crossed arrows, similar to Briquet 6269-6275, especially to Briquet 6271 (attested 1462). The whole group and its variants are attested in Northeastern Italy 1448-1495.

Binding: Original brown leather over bevelled beech boards, both covers blind-tooled with fillets and small tools in ropework design. Sewn on three split leather thongs. Spine damaged. Remnants of three clasps, one at the top, one at the bottom and one at the side edge of the covers, each attached with three engraved nails to the front cover; quadrangular decorated brass catches on the rear cover, engraved with the initial “S” and each fixed with four nails., Headings in purplish red. Alternately red and blue paragraph marks and 1- and 2-line plain initials with guide letters. Decorated initials: f. 1r (Prologue), 7-line white vinestem initial followed by text line in fancy Capitalis; f. 2r (Part 1), 4-line Humanistic dentelle initial; f. 12r (Part 2), 4-line white vinestem initial; f. 18v (Part 3), 4-line Humanistic dentelle initial; f. 127v (Part 4), idem. Running headlines in Capitalis in purplish red., and Script: Copied by one hand writing a small and rather uneven Humanistica Textualis Libraria, highly abbreviated, especially in the quotations of authorities.

Acquired in 1954 from C. A. Stonehill by Thomas E. Marston., Binding: ca. 1900, England. Red goatskin case with gold-tooled title "Valla In Poggium MS" and turn-ins. Gilt edges. Bound by Zaehnsdorf (London, 1842-1930)., Illuminated page (f. 1r) with partial border in outer and lower margins, white vine-stem ornament on predominately green and red ground, with some blue and white dots, framed by thin gold bars. In lower border, unidentified mutilated coat of arms, against blue ground. Seven illuminated initials, 4- to 2-line, gold, against blue, green and red grounds with white vine-stem ornament and white dots. Headings and marginal annotations in pale red., and Script: Written in a round humanistic script by a single scribe, above top line.
