Binding: Between 1800 and 1810, Italy. Half bound in brown sheepskin, gold-tooled, with two green, gold-tooled labels: "Hieronimi/ In Epistol/ ad Romanos/ Manuscrip" and "Saecul XII". Bright pink paper sides and edges spattered blue-green. The spine of the manuscript is back bevelled at head and tail. Rust stains from the nails of four corner bosses of early binding on first two leaves., Fine painted initials, ff. 1r and 29v, red with simple green penwork designs and pale yellow wash, 8-line; smaller red, green, or dark yellow-brown monochrome initials, 7- to 1-line. On f. 141r red initial, 7-line, with pale yellow wash. Headings in red., and Script: Written by multiple scribes in well formed early gothic bookhand.

The preceding binding had wooden boards as appears from the worm holes in the first and final leaves., Headings and explicit formulas in pale red; the heading of art. 5 in Capitalis. Space for 3- or 2-line initials reserved in art. 1. The first words of artt. 2 and 5 are written in pale red capitals., and Script: Copied by one hand in Humanistica Cursiva Formata; artt. 7-9 in a more sloping and more rapid script.
Binding: Nineteenth century, England. Bound by Zaehnsdorf (London, 1842-1930) in brown goatskin, blind-tooled, with gold-tooled spine "Cicero" and "MS". Yellow edges. Discoloration on early parchment endleaves reveal traces of corner tongues., Blanks at end not digitzed., Script: The manuscript was copied by two scribes who exhibit distinct formats and scripts reflecting the transition from gothic to humanistic types of book production. Scribe I) ff. 1-107r, line 14. Written in a very fine early humanistic bookhand, above top line. Scribe II) ff. 107r, line 15-135r. Written in a semi-gothic script, below top line, in a style of writing similar to that used by Coluccio Salutati; strong gothic influence in forms of majuscules., and Twenty-three illuminated intials of fine quality, 6- to 2-line, yellow on rectangular bright blue grounds with narrow black frames. Grounds filled with restrained and stylized thin white vine-stem ornament and intricate white filigree. Most spaces for rubrics left unfilled.

Plain edges., Blank binder's leaves not scanned., Large capitals in red at text divisions, sometimes with slight pen ornament, other capitals stroked red throughout, fancy ascenders on top lines transgressing the upper rules and stroked red, similar descenders occasionally below the bottom bordering line, usually not colored., Modern pencil foliation., On paper., Script: Neatly written in a gothic cursive hand., and Watermarks: Two batches of unidentified paper watermarked with a gothic "P," the mark plain and smaller in one batch, larger and surmounted by a trefoil in the other.
