"A parody of British Museum Satires No. 10979 by Gillray. Queen Caroline and her supporters, realistically depicted, sleep round the dinner-table after dessert (at Brandenburgh House), their dreams are supported on clouds which hide the upper part of the wall. The Queen (left), dressed much as in British Museum Satires No. 14103, but with trailing draperies, lies back in an arm-chair, arms extended, her knees crossed and shoes kicked off. She wears the accustomed miniature of Bergami, see British Museum Satires No. 13858; her bracelets are inscribed 'C B'. Lieut. Flinn leans on the back of her chair, looking down at her protectingly, the only one awake. At her right hand sleeps Joseph Hume, identified by a paper in his pocket: 'Humes motion upon Queenboro'. Facing him and on the Queen's left sits Lady Anne Hamilton, wearing a feathered (Scots) bonnet. In an arm-chair facing the Queen Alderman Wood (right) leans back, one thin leg on the table. On his right is Dr. Parr; on his left Hownam, in naval uniform, bestrides his chair with his back to the table, his head buried in his hands which are folded on the back of his chair (inscribed 'C R'). Decanters are labelled 'C BR'; a (gold) centrepiece for fruit is supported by three naked nymphs. On the floor are glasses and many more decanters: 'Brandy' (by the Queen); 'Rum', 'Madeira', 'Port' by Wood. The carpet is patterned with hearts and arrows. In the centre of the wall is a large fireplace flanked by fire-screens, each with a half length portrait surmounted by a crescent. On the chimneypiece are three dancing figurines: the Queen apparently as Columbine (see British Museum Satires No. 14120) between a Turk (Mahomet, see British Museum Satires No. 13929) and a Harlequin (Bergami as in British Museum Satires No. 14120). Two bell-pulls terminate in satyrs' heads; similar heads decorate the chairs. The pictures are (left) a half length of Bergami as a courier above two smaller pictures: a tent on a ship, see British Museum Satires No. 13818, and the Queen walking with Wood. On the right a half length of Bergami after his promotion above a picture of Bergami and the Queen walking together, and one of Bergami rowing her in a boat (on Como). A globe enclosing a lamp mounted with rams' heads hangs from the ceiling. On the cloud, behind the lamp, is a vision of loaves and fishes, above, an open book inscribed 'Bless the [Qu]een'. The topmost dream is a coronation, realistically depicted: the King, crowned, and Queen kneel face to face, the Archbishop about to place a crown on her head. Peeresses stand behind the Queen, peers behind the King. On the right and left are two disks of light, which illuminate the scenes below. One is 'R I G H T S' (the letters in a circle) above a view of Buckingham House ('the Queen's House'). The other is 'P R I V I LE G E S': the Queen, wearing a crown, stands on a dais, a lady kisses her hand, other ladies stand on the left and right. Below the title: 'Thus Queen Mab Gallops Night by Night Thro' Lover's brains, & then they dream of Love; Sometimes she gallops oe'r a Courtiers Nose, And then dreams he of smelling out a Place, And sometimes comes she as a tythe pigs tail Tickling the parson as he lies asleep; But, 'tis the baseless fabric of a Vision, that leaves not a rack behind. "Lady Hertford, seated regally on a small sofa, cuts locks from the head of the Regent who reclines against her knees, asleep. The locks already cut are on the ground inscribed respectively 'Sheridan', 'Norfolk', 'Moira', 'Holland', 'Erskine'. She is about to shear off one inscribed 'Grenville'; the last, 'Grey', is still on his head. The Prince, who is conventionally handsome, and wears uniform, holds a paper signed '[Gren]ville / Grey'; his garter, inscribed 'Honi so . . .', is loose, and his left hand hides the star on his breast. Lord Yarmouth (right) stands holding a guttering candle; he points to the uncut lock, saying, "Don't forget that lock laying [on] the shoulder its Grey dy'ye see!" In his pocket is a pamphlet: 'Art of Milling' [see British Museum Satires No. 11842]. To leave no doubt as to his identity, a basket of fish is beside him inscribed '[Y]armouth Herrings'. Lady Hertford is heavily handsome; a small crown, which might pass as a tiara decorates her head; one foot rests regally on a footstool. A pillar and drapery behind her suggest regal state. On the sofa beside her is a rolled document headed 'Road to Hertford from Pall Mall'. On the ground (left) are empty wine-bottles; on a book by the Prince's feet, 'Economy of Human Life', lies a broken bottle from which wine pours. Behind (left) stands Perceval in his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown, watching from behind a curtain which he holds aside; Castlereagh stands behind him, saying, "By Jasus, but she's as pretty a Barber as ever I clap't my eyes upon." Copied from a very curious print designed and engraved by Hogarth, of which there are only two impressions, both of them in the possession of John Ireland. March 15th 1796. [Image of hand with pointing finger]. After taking the above impressions, Hogarth changed the point of his satire from the superstitious absurdities of popery and ridiculous personification delineated by ancient painters, to the popular credulities of his own day, erased or essentially altered every figure except two, and on the same piece of copper engraved the plate now in the possession of Messrs. Boydell, entitled Credulity, superstition & fanaticism, a medley., Dedication etched either side of title: Humbly dedicated to his Grace the Arch Bishop of Canterbury, by his Graces most obedient humble servant Wm. The fourth print in the series "Four Times of the Day" is set at the intersection of Rummer Court and Charing Cross. Le Sueur's equestrian statue of Charles I can be seen in the background. It is the anniversary of the Restoration of Charles II (29 May, known as "Oak Apple Day"). In the foreground a drunken freemason (probably the corrupt magistrate Sir Thomas De Veil) is supported by a serving man. Behind them a man pours gin into a keg. To the left a barber is seen at work through a window; each pane of the shop window contains a lit candle. From a window above the barber shop, a chamber pot is being emptied onto the top of a wooden shelter under which a man and woman sleep. Beside them, a link boy crouches as he blows on the flame of his torch. Behind and to the right of the freemason, the Salisbury Flying Coach has crashed and overturned while trying to avoid a bonfire in the middle of the street; the passengers reach out the window of the coach, alarmed looks on their faces.Two men look on, one of whom appears to be a butcher. Shop and tavern signs include the barber's which is decorated with oak leaves and advertises "Shaving Bleeding & Teeth Drawn wth. a Touch Ecce Signum"; the Rummer Tavern; the Earl of Cardigan; and, the Bagnio and the New Bagnio
