The profile head of the dentist is close to the fat face of his patient, a woman with a wide smiling mouth, open to show two rows of artificial teeth and gums. He smiles, displaying his own artificial teeth, and holds his patient by the chin. Facing him (right) is a man's head in profile, staring up at the woman through a double lorgnette; his open mouth reveals sparse and irregular teeth, in a grotesque jaw. Above his head is a notice: 'Mineral Teeth Monsier De Charmant from Paris engages to affix from one tooth to a whole set without pain. "The Prince of Wales, languid with repletion, leans back in an arm-chair, holding a fork to his mouth. His waistcoat is held together by a single button across his distended stomach. On his right a circular table covered with the remains of a meal, with decanters of 'Port' and 'Brandy', a castor of 'Chian'. Under the table, partly covered by the cloth, are empty wine-bottles. Behind the chair (right) a brimming chamber-pot stands on a table or commode on which are long bills: 'Poulterers Bill . . . unpaid, Butcher's Bill . . . unpaid, Baker's Bill . . . unpaid', and (on the ground) 'Doctors Bill'. In the foreground (right) lie a dice-box and dice with three books: 'Debts of Honor Unpaid', 'Newmarket List', and 'Faro Partnership Account Self Archer Hobart & Co.' On a shelf behind the Prince (right) is a triple stand of jelly-glasses, among which is a small pot: 'For the Piles', and a bottle: 'Drops for a Stinking Breath'. Beside it are a box of 'Leakes Pills', and a bottle of 'Velnos Vegetable Syrup' (see BMSat 7592). On the wall above is a candle-sconce with a burlesque coat of arms for the Prince: a plate with a crossed knife and fork, with his motto, coronet, and feathers; one candle is stuck in a wine-bottle, the other in a wine-glass. Above the Prince's head is a round picture in an elaborate frame inscribed 'L. Comoro, Ætat. 199 [sic]': a half length portrait of a man with a long beard drinking from a glass inscribed 'Aqua'. (Luigi Cornaro of Padua, 1467-1566, published 'Discorri della vita sobria . . .', a treatise on the means of living to extreme old age, describing the ascetic diet by which he had recovered health and vitality when in danger of death at the age of forty. "The artist introduces us to the laboratory of a so-called alchemist. A roguish Jew and his familiar are busily engaged in the transmutation of metals; the servant, with a pair of long- nozzled bellows, is engaged in kindling the furnace, in which is a crucible; various retorts, alembics, and other paraphernalia of the 'black arts,' are scattered about, as well as a formula for 'changing lead into gold'; although the alchemists at best could only contrive to accomplish the reverse transmutation. Suggestive prints are hung on the walls of this chamber of mystery, such as the portrait of the notorious 'Count Cagliostro, discoverer of the Philosopher's Stone,' and the figure of the spurious 'Bottle Conjurer.' A military officer, in the next apartment, is turning his opportunities to more practical advantage by embracing, with a certain display of ardour, a pretty maiden who is nothing loth, the daughter, it appears, of the philosophically minded investigator."--Grego, J. "A three quarter length portrait of Dr. Messenger Monsey walking towards the spectator; his right arm rests on the shoulder of a Chelsea pensioner; both men walk with sticks. Monsey wears a hat and wig, the pensioner holds his hat in his right hand. The background is the north front of Chelsea Hospital showing its pediment and eastern portion. This is very freely sketched, as are two pensioners with crutches by the doorway. Beneath the title is etched: 'Epitaph on the late Dr Monsey, supposed to have been written by himself. "A satire on the fashionable lectures at the Royal Institution. The audience are in a semicircle facing the lecturer's table, which is covered with apparatus. The lecturer, probably not Garnett but Thomas Young who succeeded him as Professor of Natural Philosophy at the Institute in July 1801, and who delivered thirty lectures there between January and May 1802, is experimenting on Sir J. C. Hippisley (left). Holding him by the nose, he applies to his mouth a tube from a series of retorts in which a gas has been made. The result is a violent explosion of flame and smoke from the victim's breeches. Next Young stands Humphry Davy, assistant lecturer to the Institute since July 1801. Holding a pair of bellows with vapour and gas spouting from its nozzle, he watches the experiment with a sardonic smile. Facing the table from the right, Count Rumford (see British Museum Satires No. 9565) stands a little apart from the audience, looking on with a complacent and proprietary smile; he wears an order. On the extreme right the audience are Isaac D 'Israeli, wearing spectacles over half-closed eyes, Lord Gower, watching impassively, and Lord Stanhope, looking intently through an eyeglass. Beside him on the padded green bench is an open book: 'Hints on the nature of Air requir'd for the new French Diving Boat.' (Fulton's submarine was tried in Brest harbour in 1801, and a small vessel was blown up by a torpedo; Stanhope's experiments with steam navigation had been unsucces-ful, cf. British Museum Satires No. 8640.) Two unidentified ladies watch open-eyed. Immediately in front of Stanhope sits Lord Pomfret, enormously stout, his eyes almost shut. These watch from the right. Facing the lecturer sit (right to left) Sir H. "A young woman stands upon a high stool, her skirts raised to show her posteriors to three men (half length) behind her. She bends forward, pointing to Charles Fox who stands with his hands handcuffed in a booth or box behind a bar. Fox has an enormous head and an expression of terrified dismay at the denunciation. Behind him is a man in profile holding a constable's staff. The three men are evidently Bow Street Justices (Sir Sampson Wright, Addington, and Bond); the principal magistrate (Wright) wears a hat and spectacles and is much caricatured (cf. British Museum Satires Nos. 6119-21). Above their heads are the evenly balanced scales of Justice. "A scene in a vaccine institution; poor patients crowd in through a doorway on the left; in the room are those whose treatment has had dire consequences. A comely and frightened young woman sits in an armchair in the centre, the doctor (Jenner, a good portrait, see British Museum Satires No. 9925) holds her right arm and gashes it with his knife, while a deformed and ragged boy holds up a bucket of 'Vaccine Pock hot from ye Cow'. A charity-schoolboy's oval badge on his sleeve is inscribed 'St Pancras'; from his coat pocket projects a pamphlet: 'Benefits of the Vaccine Process'. From the patients miniature cows sprout or leap. A pregnant woman (right) stands in profile to the right, a cow issues from her mouth, another from below her ragged petticoat. A man dressed as a butcher registers despair at the horns which sprout from his forehead. A labourer with a pitchfork sees a cow bursting from a swelling on his arm while another breaks through his breeches; cows struggle through huge swellings on nose, ear, and cheek. Another patient has only reached the stage of large carbuncles on forehead and chin. The doctor's medicine-chest and a close-stool stand on the left. On the chest are bottles, a syringe, &c, and a tub of 'Opening Mixture'. This a haughty assistant ladles contemptuously into the mouths of the patients as they crowd into the room.
