On parchment leaves at front and rear: rust stains from five bosses and 2 fore-edge fastenings of an earlier binding., Initials for major text divisions in red with designs on parchment ground, 18- to 4-line, and some (e.g., f. 28r) with modest penwork designs in red and/or black. Small plain initials, 3- to 1-line, rubrics, and paragraph marks, in red., Purchased in 1954 from B. Rosenthal by Thomas E. Martson., and Script: Written by a single scribe in an informal gothic bookhand, below top line.

- Binding: Eighteenth century, France. Greenish brown goatskin gold-tooled. Gold-tooled panels and dark red gold-tooled label (damaged) on spine. Red edges., Folios 1-50 have flourished initials, 3- to 2-line, alternating blue with red penwork designs and red with purple; two initials of better quality, divided red and blue, with red and purple flourishes (ff. 42r, 43v); many initials have harping designs. For remainder of manuscript uninspired red initials, either plain or with harping designs in brown ink. Rubrics, underlining and initial strokes, in red, throughout. - Binding: Between 1800 and 1810, Italy. Half bound in brown calf with bright pink paper sides and edges spattered bluish green. Two green, gold-tooled labels: "Gregorii. M/ Pastoralis/ Manuscrip" and "Saecul XII". Bound in the same distinctive style as Marston MSS 50, 128, 135, 151, 153, 158, 159, and 197, also from the Cistercian abbey of Hautecombe., Part I: Decorative initials, 3- to 2-line, in black, with simple pen designs and small "pearls" on the thin parts of the letters, on irregular grounds of pale yellow wash. Initial strokes and plain line-fillers in pale yellow (initial strokes in red on f. 9r presumably added by the rubricator of ff. 1-8). A series of red dots (also a later addition?) outline the ground of initial on f. 18v. Explicit on f. 80r brushed with yellow wash. Part II: Plain monochrome initials, 3- to 2-line, in red or blue. Spaces for rubrics left unfilled; guide letters., and Script: Part I (ff. 1-80): Written by a single scribe in a well formed late caroline calligraphic minuscule. - Binding: Contemporary, now in bad condition. Limp parchment, part of a notarial document in Latin in handwriting close to the main hand of the manuscript., Pale red headings. The decoration proper does not extend beyond f. 26v: red heightening of the majuscules and red plain initials (2-3 lines), occasionally with guide letter. On f. 1r large flourished initial I in red and black, with penwork extension in the inner margin., and Script: Copied in Gothica-Humanistica (Gothica Hybrida Libraria under Humanistic influence,visible in some majuscules and the occasional use of the ampersand), probably by one hand lacking consistency.

- Manuscript on paper (sized) of Vincent Ferrer, Sermones. In this version of the sermons the text begins in Latin, presents the main points of the sermon in Spanish, and then returns to the body of the text in Latin.
- Description:
- Binding: ca. 1500, Spain. Wound sewing on four tawed skin, slit straps or double cords laced into the wooden boards. Plain wound natural color endbands, caught up on the spine, are sewn on cores laced into the boards and pegged. They are tied down around a strip of tawed skin. There is a coarse cloth spine lining. Back pastedown is part of a bifolium from a liturgical manuscript with Aquitanian musical notation. Covered with reddish-brown sheepskin, blind-tooled with a rope interlace tool, fleurs de lis and annular dots. Spine: supports outlined with double fillets; panels diapered with double fillets with annular dots at the intersections. There are traces of two fastenings, the catches on the lower board, and traces of five round bosses on each board. Damage from a chain attachment (?) near the tail of the upper board; remains of a paper or vellum label near the head., Plain red intials for each sermon; headings, foliation and paragraph marks in red. First words of each sermon in large gothic bookhand for display script., Script: Written in gothic cursive script, above top line., and Watermarks: similar in design to Briquet Ciseaux 3694-3702, and unidentified cross bow in a circle.

Covered in white tawed skin with two fastenings, the catches on the upper board. Remains of label with title on spine; traces of inscription on upper board. Rebacked., Only selected leaves scanned., Plain red initials, 3- to 2-line. Paragraph marks, initial strokes and underlining in red; rubrics added sporadically., Purchased in 1956 from Bernard Quaritch of London by L. C. Witten, who sold it in 1958 to Thomas E. Marston., Script: Written in hybrida script, perhaps by a single scribe., The bookplate of Hilprand Brandenberg (hand-colored woodcut of an angel holding a shield representing his arms: an ox passant with a ring in its nose) is pasted below the ownership inscription, to which the shelf-mark "CXXXI" was added by a later hand., and Watermarks: several bull's heads including Piccard Ochsenkopf V.636 and similar in design to V.305-13.

- Description:
- Attractive pen-and-ink drawings throughout the manuscript, in red, though much of manuscript now stained. Folio 1r with a partial border formed of fantastic beasts, dragons and grotesques. Other drawings in margins include a fantastic bird, f. 9r; a dragon with a human head issuing forth stylized scrolls, f. 40v; a scroll inhabited by a fantastic bird, f. 49r; a lizard-like creature, its tail forming a partial border, f. 53r; a grotesque, f. 73v. Several drawings in the lower margin have been trimmed. Plain initials in red, some with penwork scrolls or simple flourishing. Headings and underlining of Biblical passages in red., Binding: Nineteenth century (?), Italy (?). Brown leather case with title, in ink, on spine: "Homil. in Evangel". Fragment of an unidentified 13th-century Latin document (monastic register?) bound in as second front flyleaf., and Script: Written in a nice large early gothic script, above top line.

- Binding: Original brown leather over heavy wooden boards, sewn on four split leather thongs; plaited leather headbands; spine missing. The covers are blind-tooled with frames and lozenges of triple fillets and the following stamps: a lare and a small lozenge-shaped fleur-de-lis; a large and a small rozette; a circular Pascal Lamb; a rectangular stamp with inscription “MARIA”. Remnants of two brass clasps attached to the front board., Most pages slightly damaged by the acid ink. Water stains at the bottom of the outer margins of the leaves in the final quires., Paragraph marks and underlining in red. Red stroking of majuscules. Red plain initials (2-3 lines; 4 lines f. 3r, 7 lines f. 73r); red flourished initials with black penwork (9 lines, f. 72r, 7 lines and of a less careful execution f. 116v). - Manuscript on paper, composed of two independant sections. Part I (ff. 1r-121v): Sermons, excerpts and treatises. With works by Thomas de Hibernia and Albertus de Padua. Part II (ff.122r-180v): Works by St. John Chrysostom; with a treatise on temptations and special Mass prayers.

- Binding: Contemporary Northern French or Flemish binding, which no doubt was made for Part II and rebacked when Part I was added: blind-tooled brown calfskin over bevelled wooden boards; the decoration consists of frames and a lozenge pattern traced in triple fillets, the lozenges filled with three tools: a rose, an acorn motif and a standing figure (?). Remnants of two clasps attached to the rear cover, with engraved brass catches on the front cover. On the 19th-century (?) spine the gold-tooled inscriptions “SERMONES” / and “IOANNES / CHRYSOSTOMUS”., Part I: Underlining and plain initials. Headings underlined or framed or written in red. Framed running headlines on the pages where a new article begins. Part II: Headings, heightening of the majuscules, and red 2-line plain initials in art. 41. The heightening is continued up to f. 137v, but the initials have not been executed from art. 42 onwards. Guide letters for all initials., Script: Part I: Copied by one hand in small Gothica Hybrida Currens. Some additions in a larger and more formal handwriting. Marginal captions. The scribe is Iohannes de Lovanio (John of Louvain), called (de) Dynen, lector in the convent of the Hermits of St. Augustine in Venice. Part II: Copied by the priest Jean Frassent in Gothica Cursiva Formata (Bastarda), which is less carefully executed on the final pages. Calligraphic extensions at the ascenders on the top line., and There is a contemporary foliation in red ink in arabic numerals in the middle of the upper margins of the recto pages, which coincides with the modern foliation up to f. 86; ff. “87”-“88” of the contemporary foliation are missing; the latter continues from “89” (= f. 87) to “113” (= f. 111). There are traces of a still earlier foliation, also in the center of the upper margins, which has been erased and appears to run from “70” (= f.1) to “159” (= f. 90, “156” and “157” being the missing leaves).
