Barrett was secretary of the New York Mercantile Exchange and the editor of American Grocer when he travelled from New York to California in order to study that state's "contribution to the world food supply." The newspaper clippings represent the letters he sent back to the American Grocer, published under the heading "From Ocean to Ocean: Notes by the Way" in 1889., Accompanied by two folders, one containing a 26-page typescript with manuscript annotations describing the cross-country trip illustrated in the album, and the other containing clippings and miscellaneous commercial photographs of scenery along the route of the trip., and Album pages are extremely fragile.
