- Binding: Nineteenth century, Italy. Quarter bound in tan paper with semi-limp paper sides. Written, in ink, on spine: "De Scientia/ Loquendi/ Tacendi/ Manos" and "Albertani/ Pergomena". On parchment leaves at front and rear: rust stains from five bosses and 2 fore-edge fastenings of an earlier binding., Initials for major text divisions in red with designs on parchment ground, 18- to 4-line, and some (e.g., f. 28r) with modest penwork designs in red and/or black. Small plain initials, 3- to 1-line, rubrics, and paragraph marks, in red., Purchased in 1954 from B. Rosenthal by Thomas E. Martson., and Script: Written by a single scribe in an informal gothic bookhand, below top line.

- Description:
- Binding: Fifteenth century. Original sewing on five slit, tawed straps laced into wooden boards. Endband cores laid in grooves. Covered with white, tawed skin, blind-tooled with a St. Andrew's cross within panel borders. The covering leather is sewn around the endbands, from spine to edges, with a back-stitch. Traces of round bosses, probably brass, and of two strap and pin fastenings, the pins on the upper board., Collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 573). Given to Yale in 1929 by Mrs. J. L. Leipziger., Plain initials in red and rubrics throughout., Script: Gothic cursive script of three hands. Scribe 1) ff. 1r-156v; Scribe 2) ff. 157r-274r; Scribe 3, Laurence of Mechlin, wrote ff. 274r-317r and dated the codex 1452., and Watermarks: similar to Briquet Ancre 381, Balance 2427, Tete de boeuf 15102.

- Description:
- Binding: Sixteenth century. Brown leather over cardboard boards, the covers blind-tooled with a triple fillet lozenge inside a floral roll frame, the center and the corners gold-tooled with two different floral tools. Spine with four raised bands and remnants of gold-tooled lilies in the compartments. Edges painted blue. Marks of two pairs of ties., Headings in red. Red heightening (stroking) of the majuscules. 2-3-line flourished initials (with guide letters) in red with penwork varying from pale red to purple. A large (10 lines) decorated flourished initial in red, with developed purple penwork (“R” instead of “D”) in littera duplex style on f. 229v. Two Gothic historiated initials on gold background with floral marginal extensions: f. 1r: St. Jerome with lion and boy holding open a book (damaged); f. 25v: a monk copying., Script: Apparently four scribes: A, Iohannes de Carnago, is the main scribe and copied ff. 1r-260v (with the exception of 8 lines at the bottom) in Gothico-Humanistica Semitextualis Libraria; B copied from the bottom lines of f. 260v to f. 270v, in Humanistica Textualis Libraria; C copied ff. 271r-275v in Gothico-Humanistica Textualis Libraria; and D copied ff. 276r-304v in Gothico-Humanistica Semitextualis Libraria., and The codex belonged to the Diocesan Library of Dunedin, New Zealand. - Description:
- Binding: 1800-1810, Italy. Half bound in brown calf with bright pink paper sides that have been covered with tan paper; edges spattered blue-green. Two gold-tooled labels on spine, the first left blank and the lower one reading "Saecul XII". Bound in the same distinctive style as Marston MSS 50, 125, 128, 135, 151, 153, 159, and 197, also from the Cisterican abbey of Hautecombe. and Numerous pen and ink initials of good quality, 8- to 3-line, drawn in red. The initials are constructed of thick vine stems, divided in half and swelling at the ends, issuing sprouts of intertwining stylized foliage. On f. 10v the letter E is formed from a bird and its extended wing; on ff. 75r and 103r the initials terminate in animal heads. The most important initials, ff. 1v, 13r, 36v, 62r, 75r, 114r, 115v and 119v, are touched with patches of ochre and summary modelling in the same color. On f. 1v the continuation capitals are filled in with red and ochre. Plain initials and headings in red. Remains of instructions to the rubricator along outer edge perpendicular to text (e.g., ff. 119v, 120v).

- Manuscript on parchment of astrological texts drawn largely from Arab astrology of the early Middle Ages, and transmitted in medieval Latin translations; in addition Ptolemy's Centiloquium is present, transmitted not in Greek but through the Arabic, along with a single contemporary component, the Astrolabium planum of Johann Engel.

- Binding: Nineteenth century, English. Marbled paper boards, green calf back with six heavy (false?) bands, the compartments with patterns of small tools impressed in gold and with gold-stamped titles, a small rectangular label with the printed number 1037 and a small round label with the inked number 894 glued to the bottommost compartment. All edges gilt. Preserved in a modern green cloth folding box, probably French, with leather label., Collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps. Mellon MS 155, acquired from C. A. Stonehill, Inc. (bookseller), New Haven. Gift of Paul and Mary Mellon, 1965., Rubrics, and occasional headlines in red, diagrams in the text in brown and red inks. Full illuminated border, outlined in red, on f. 1r of leafy sprays in colors and gold, the white spaces filled up with black dots and small burnished gold circles each with three or four small tendrils; a large initial in burnished gold and colors at the beginning of the text in the first column, with gold band extending downward and then around three sides of the page forming an inner border, completed by a red line at top; a lozenge at the center of the lower band of the border containing a pattern of platelike discs, quatrefoils, and a leafy spray on a dull gold ground, this segment almost certainly a later replacement of an original coat of arms which has been erased. Elsewhere in the manuscript smaller illuminated initials in the style of the first frequently occur, and larger ones with descenders to partial borders at the foot of the page occur. Each of the ninety-six pages from f. 191r through 238v has four drawings in colors (six on those pages which open each of the signs of the Zodiac), placed within diagrams accompanied by slight text., and Script: Written by a single scribe in a large and clear hand in Gothica textualis formata and Bastarda.

- Attractive flourished initials, red and blue divided with penwork designs in the same colors, mark the beginning of arts. 1-4; first few words of each of these texts written in red and blue alternating majuscules. For minor text divisions 2-line initials red or blue with designs in the opposite color. Paragraph marks in red (or sometimes alternating red and blue). Headings and instructions to rubricator in red., Binding: Nineteenth century, Germany. Parchment case binding made from a bifolium of a missal (Germany, 15th century) containing text for the end of the Secret for the 11th Sunday after Pentecost through part of the Gospel reading for the 12th Sunday. Remains of title, in ink, on spine. Pink (faded red?) edges., and Script: Written in a small neat gothic text script, above top line and with uncrossed tironian et. Marginal and interlinear annotations, contemporary or slightly later, in a variety of scholarly hands; annotations written in ink, crayon and lead, some very faded and barely legible.
