Abstract:
A composite manuscript written in different locations and periods: Part I was written in Italy in the first half of the 14th century; Part II was probably written in England (or Northern France?) at the end of the 13th or beginning of the 14th century. The index was added on blank leaves in Italy in the 14th century, perhaps at the same time that Parts I and II were joined together to form the present codex. and Manuscript on parchment composed of two distinct parts. Part I: 1) Brief prologues to the Pauline Epistles, paraphrasing or extracted from the argumenta of Haimo of Auxerre, Expositio in epistolas Sancti Pauli. 2-4) Notes for sermons arranged according to the liturgical year. Part II: 5) Unidentified sermons. 6) John of Wales, Breviloquium.

Binding: Nineteenth century, England. Backs of quires cut in for original sewing. Brown calf case, blind-tooled., Part I: Red initials, 3- to 2-line, with crude harping designs in black; headings and paragraph marks (art. 3) in red. Instructions for rubricator. Part II: Flourished initials, 3- to 2-line, alternate red and blue with penwork designs in the opposite color. Paragraph marks alternate red and blue; headings, often added in margin, in red. Remains of guide letters for decorator., Purchased from C. A. Stonehill in 1958 by Thomas E. Marston., and Script: Part I (ff. 1-24): Scribe I copied ff. 1r-6v in small gothic bookhand with southern features; Scribe II copied ff. 7r-24r in a somewhat more angular gothic bookhand; additions by different scribes on f. 24r-v. Description:
Binding: Fifteenth century, Italy. Parchment stays adhered inside each quire. Original wound sewing on three tawed skin, slit straps laced through tunnels in the edge to channels on the outside of beech boards and nailed. A natural color endband, caught up on the spine, is sewn on a tawed skin core which is laid in grooves on the outside of the boards and pegged. Tied down through brown leather. Quarter bound in mottled brown tawed skin cut out around the head and tail supports. Two fastenings, the leaf-shaped catches (wanting) on the lower board, the upper one cut in for the red fabric straps. The letter R written in ink on head edge., ff. 53v-60r blank, not digitized., Plain red initials, 3- to 1-line, throughout. Guide letters for initials in margin., Script: Written in humanistic cursive script with gothic features by a single scribe, above top line., and Watermarks, buried in gutter: similar in design to Briquet Fleur 6647-49, Briquet Croix grecque 5576 and Piccard Kreuz II.607, Piccard Einhorn III.1648.

Binding: Nineteenth century, England. De luxe, gold-tooled green morocco over cardboard; each cover framed by rich gold-tooling imitating the decorated initial on f. 1v; turn-ins gold-tooled. Gold-tooled spine with repeated motif in the same style and title: “GREGORII / PASTORALIS / M.S.”. Gilt edges., Collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (MS 14872)., Headings in red, missing from f. 12v onwards. 1-3-line plain initials in red of various shades. On f. 1v very large (c. 25 lines) decorated Romanesque initial “P” in red., Holes and defective corners, many repaired; the lower margins of ff. 63 and 91-92 are repaired by means of a strip of parchment; the lower margin of f. 93 is cut off. The manuscript is heavily trimmed at the top. First and last pages very soiled., and Script: Copied by various scribes writing Praegothica, difficult to distinguish from each other because of the uneven level of execution of their hands.

Binding: 15th-16th centuries. Original sewing on four double, tawed cords laced into flush wooden boards. The covering extends over the endbands and is sewn around them. Traces of a secondary embroidery. Spine lined with tawed skin extending to outside of boards. Covered with tawed, cream-colored skin. A brass catch on the lower cover and traces of a clasp attachment on the first few leaves. Lower board detached, upper board and most of the spine covering wanting, probably for some time., In Latin and Anglo-Norman., Lower half of ff. 33, 78 torn; large portions of text stained and illegible., Script: Written in small, cramped anglicana by one scribe., and Twelve illuminated initials (crudely drawn and much rubbed), in dark red, blue, gold, green, and orange, with simple borders extending the length of the folio. Reformatio Sigismundi, originally written in 1439 at the alleged instigation of the Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund (1368-1437) for the Council of Basel. The text of Marston MS 273 is the vulgate version (V), composed around 1440. As with other versions, the author of this text is supposedly Friedrich von Lantnau or Lantzenau (see f. 6r), who claims to have undertaken the translation of it into German from the "original" Latin. The identity of this person is still uncertain (see Koller, op. cit., p. 6), and the idea of a Latin "original" is rejected by the editor (Koller, op. cit., p. 17).
