Abstract:
A scene outside the Bell Inn in which a country girl, Moll Hackabout, just arrived on the York Wagon, meets an extravagantly dressed bawd (Mother Needham); a clergyman on horseback fails to notice the encounter, but a lecherous old gentleman (Colonel Charteris) eyes the girl with anticipation. In the lower right the girl's initials "M.H." (M[ary?] Hackabout) are on her portmanteau, next to which is a basket with a goose with a note around its neck, "For my Loving Cosen in Tems Stret in London", presumably the person who has failed to meet her. In the background a woman hangs out her laundry on a balcony

A view of the Stock Exchange, filled with members; the wall-clock points to 1:30. A few sticks and fists are raised above the crowd, and a hat flies up. In the foreground a horse, led in by two members, is incited by others to kick, a practical joke on its owner. Members in the foreground are after, or vaguely resemble, City portraits by Dighton. ... On the right, Wright stands with raised hand, amused at the horse. Montefiore in profile to the right, faces Hibers(?). Others are mentioned, including Bish. Among the crowd a bearded Jew is consipicuous. On a raised platform at each side stands a beadle

A single-horse carriage is stopped in front of a rustic inn or roadhouse, with two caricatured Frenchmen (one a postillion wearing enormous boots) engaged in changing out the horse. An occupant of the carriage hands money out the window to a peasant woman holding an infant and accompanied by a young boy; two other shabbily dressed figures are nearby next to a tree, one of them playing a makeshift drum. In the doorway of the building stands a young woman, and to the left a man under an archway stands with arms crossed; both watch the scene unfold. In the background a postillion rides away on horseback, whip extended into the air
