Caption title., First line: "Your Majesty having been pleased to refer to your Privy Council the Queen's memorial ..., A broadside that lays out Queen Caroline's appeal to be rightfully crowned Queen alongside her estranged husband George IV. Despite the withdrawal of the Pains and Penalties Bill following Caroline's trial in the House of Lords, the King continued to shun his wife, culminating in his refusal to allow her entry into the coronation which took place at Westminster Abbey on July 19th, 1821., Ornamental border around imprint., "(Price one penny.)"--Lower right below imprint., and Laid down on modern paper backing. She pouts her lips to kiss. Their words are engraved below: Falstaff--hou dost give me flattering busses. Doll Nay, truly; I kiss thee with a constant heart. Fal-I am old, I am old. Doll-I love thee better than I love e'er a scurvy young boy of them all. --vide Shakspeare ['II Henry IV, II. iv.] Behind (right) stands Bardolph, with the head and nose of Curtis, talking to a lean Mrs. Quickly, who has the unmistakable profile of Lord Conyngham, behind whom a huge antlered stag's head looks down from the wall. Both women wear steeple-crowned hats, but the dress of one is flamboyant and ornate, of the other demure. A man looks in cautiously from the doorway. "A handsome rakish-looking man (left) puts his arms round the waist of a good-looking young woman, who draws away from him. Their words, in large labels above their heads, are from verses in the 'Examiner', 10 Jan. 1813 (by Tom Moore) [reprinted, 'The Twopenny Post-Bag', 1813, pp. 83-5, with an additional verse by the lady on 'an old Marquis [Headfort], in mischief grown hoary']: He (the first and last of four verses): "Come fly to these arms, nor let beauties so bloomy To one frigid owner be tied, The Prudes may revile, and the old ones look gloomy, But dearest we've Law on our side. . . . And ev'n should our sweet violation of duty By cold blooded jurors be tried, They can but bring it in, a "Misfortune" my beauty As long as we've Law on our side." She: "Hold! Hold my good Sir! go a little more slowly For grant I thus guiltily sigh'd, Such sinners as we are a little to lowly To hope to have Law on our side. Had you been a great Prince, to whose star shining oe'er 'em, Then people should look for thier [sic] guide, Then your Highness (and welcome) might kick down decorum, You'd always have Law on your side. . . . But for you Sir Crim Con. is a path full of troubles, By my advice therefore abide And leave the pursuit to those princes and nobles Who have such a Law on their side." On the right the Prince walks off in back view between Lady Hertford and Ellenborough, in wig and gown. He takes Ellenborough's left arm, his left arm is round Lady Hertford, whose right arm is round the Prince, her profile turned possessively towards him. Ellenborough declaims: "Too busy Senates with an over care, "To make us better than our kind can bear, "Have dash'd a spice of Envy in the laws, "And straining up to high have spoil'd the cause; "Yet some wise Nations break the cruel chains, "And own no laws but those which Love ordains." On the ground behind the group are two papers, one below the other and showing only the left margin: 'Trial / Mar[quis of Headfort] / Crim / Decem / -Dam / £20,00 .. "George IV, with a swathed and gouty leg, stands in front of the throne, supported by Lady Conyngham and a crutch, his arm round her shoulder. Peel stands partly hidden by a curtain and immediately behind Wellington, his mouthpiece; he speaks into a speaking-trumpet, the stem of which passes from Wellington's ear to his mouth from which the trumpet projects. From this mouthpiece issue the words: I feel happy in being allowed thro any medium, however degrading to communicate my expressions of sincere devotion TO-- The King interrupts him: PLACE--hat will do Arthur, always keep between me and that fellow -- he rings such a peil in our Ears. Lady Conyngham turns to the King, pointing to the trumpet: This is a contrivance of my own -- I hate the sight of him & now your M-y can keep him at a distance. "George IV (left), plainly dressed in frogged coat with fur collar, sits in an arm-chair regarding Wellington with surprise. The Duke, dressed as a carpenter, approaches him from the right, bending forward and raising his paper cap which is shaped like a coronet. He is in shirt-sleeves with a high-collared waistcoat, and an apron over his own strapped white trousers. In his left hand is a saw. He says: 'I begs pardon your honor, but I can't stand it no longer--There's my foreman Bob, and Chancery Jack, as we calls him, are fighting instead of minding their work--The vagabonds von't be easy 'till I bundles 'em out.' He watches the King with wary intentness. "A mail-coach inscribed 'Sovereig, Windsor and London', with high-stepping horses, is driven, left to right, by Wellington, who wears fashionable coaching dress with multiple-caped coat and broad-brimmed hat. He has just passed a rival coach, 'the Humbug & Co London Windsor', which has overturned, after colliding with a roadside post inscribed 'Emancipation'. An alarmed face looks out of the window; the traces have broken, the front wheels are off; the driver, Eldon, has fallen on his back on to the prostrate wheelers. The Duke of Cumberland falls head first from the frail dickey; another man (? Winchilsea) falls from the roof, which is stacked high with bulky petitions, one inscribed 'Old Womans Petition']; a paper also falls to the ground inscribed 'Bigotry, Ignorance, Intolerance, Loaves, Fishes, Pensions, Places'. Behind Wellington, on "The Sovereign", sit four men: Brougham, in barrister's wig and holding a brief-bag, a bishop, Burdett, a judge (probably Lyndhurst). The guard is Peel, who stands up, horn in hand, to say to the Duke: 'I say governor we've done em up at last, they will never recover themselves any more.' Wellington, looking over his shoulder, answers: 'No No, they are quite done up that post has smash'd them.' The inside passengers are George IV and Lady Conyngham; he leans out to watch the catastrophe, saying with a smile, 'Floored by George.' She says: 'Aye Aye George we've gotten a Coachman now vot is up to a thing or two, and knows vot is vot.' Brougham: 'Why the concern has been in a bad way some time they say that it is so rotten that all the Rats abandoned it.' The bishop: 'Its lucky they had few passengers.' Burdett: 'No wonder they upset they had too much rubbish on the roof'. The coach flies a flag inscribed 'True Patriotism Honor Truth Liberality'; it is decorated with the Royal Arms: shamrock and roses.
