A very fat woman on the left of the print faces her very thin counterpart on the right, in a room where long shadows indicate the morning hour. Both ladies wear the style of hat known as a calash (introduced in 1765), that on the left nearly round and the one on the right angular and ribbed. The woman on the left sits in an armchair with one foot on a stool as cats play in the bonnet dropped near her chair, while the woman on the right holds a fan and sits erect on a folding stool, her cork rump protruding behind her and a dog playing on her broad brimmed hat

Just inside the open door on the left a man in military coat, with sword in hand angrily confronts an old bewigged man who rests on one knee near a small table and holds a paper inscribed "Wm. Day bond 100". Another man restrains the first, while two women occupy the background, one, probably a servant, holding a pocket watch

In his right hand he holds a rod to each end of which is slung a fox's tail. A large fox's tail hangs from the back of his neck. A bell hangs outwards from the back of his waist. A ribbon flutters from his right arm. He wears a small cap with a tuft of feathers at the top. A young barmaid wearing a frilly dormeuse cap and a neckerchief with a breast knot, attends to a group of male customers gathered around the bar. An elderly military officer wearing a saber leans on the bar spooning custard from a glass, while three young men on his left ogle the barmaid. Two other men occupy the right side of the bar, and two dogs the center foreground, a poodle jumping up at the bar, and a pug urinating on a copy of "The Gazette extraordinary" which lies on the floor. Other newspapers are in the hands of the customers, the "Ledger" and the "Morning post". Bottles, glasses and bowls are arranged on shelves behind the girl
