"The five chief members of the Cabinet sleep round a small round table on which are punch-bowl (decorated with the Royal Arms), bottles of 'Port' and 'Madeira', and glasses. Portland sits full face, above the others, in a Gothic chair, a crutch beside him, one gouty bandaged hand supported by his Garter ribbon; Hawkesbury (r.) leans against him in profile to the right. Perceval, in his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown, sits on Portland's r., leaning on the table. Facing each other sit Castlereagh (l.) and Canning (r.), leaning back in their chairs. From the former's coat-pocket hangs a long scroll, resting on the floor, headed 'Defence of the Country. Mr Speaker.' It is covered with meaningless arrangements of letters which dwindle into illegibility: 'aaaa, ccccc, iiiii [&c.]'. At the end: 'Nine Hours & a half long'. On the back of his chair and against his head is poised a squalling cat; under its paws is a piece of music: 'Air by Catalani' [see BMSat 10792, &c.]. Manning's legs are stretched out on the back of Melville [Mulgrave in W. & E. The profile and a tartan plaid indicate Melville.] who lies face downwards under the table, clutching a bottle. In his pocket is a paper: 'Secret Correspondence from Copenhagen' [cf. BMSat 11564]. All register delight at their entrancing dreams. On the floor (r.) used (gold) plates are stacked, all inscribed 'Treasury'. Two rats nibble at them; beside them lies a 'Bill of Fare - 1st Course Loaves & Fishes - 2d Course Loaves & Fishes [&c., &c.]'. Empty bottles are scattered about. Clouds rise from Canning's head and float above the other sleepers, supporting their vision, which, framed in clouds, fills the upper part of the design. Britannia rides in a triumphal car shaped like a boat with the British Lion as figure-head. She holds a trident and an olive branch. Behind the car, chained to the axles, walks a dejected Napoleon. Behind him is a huge polar bear (Russia), muzzled, and on a chain. Last come three captive sovereigns, some of the 'gingerbread kings', see BMSat 10518. They are followed by a cheering crowd with a flag inscribed 'Britannia rules the World'. From the car flies a Union flag, honourably tattered. The car is drawn by a huge bull (John Bull), led by a sailor, who is preceded by soldiers, one beating a drum another blowing a trumpet. They are part of a crowd of tiny figures which is disappearing under the gate of the Tower of London, whose buildings, with cheering crowds, form a background to the triumphal procession."--British Museum online catalogue

"Pitt is borne upwards (left to right) in a chariot of swirling clouds of flame drawn by four horses abreast, and snorting fire, while his eyes are fixed on a broad beam of light inscribed 'Immortality'. He flings down his mantle, which his disciples below hold up their arms to receive. The mantle is blue faced with red (the colours of the Windsor uniform); on it a flaming sword lies across a pair of balanced scales, symbolizing Justice. Rays from the mantle strike down on the disciples; thunderbolts radiate from it, against the 'Republican-Mantle' with which the ghost of Fox tries to shelter the Opposition, and also against a tiny Napoleon. The disciples are grouped on a cliff, 'The Rock of Ages', rising from the sea. They surround a rectangular altar, of quasi-classical shape: 'The Altar of the Constitution'. Its two pilasters are 'Prudence' and 'Fortitude'. On this is a book inscribed 'Truth' on which is a royal crown. At its base lies 'Magna Charta'. The central and most prominent of the disciples, in the place of Elisha, is Canning, as the pupil of Pitt (see BMSat 10972); he stands behind the altar. Before it kneel Eldon (left) in Chancellor's wig and gown with the Purse of the Great Seal, and Perceval (right) in the gown of the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Next to Eldon (left) kneels Portland. On each side of Canning stand Hawkesbury (left) and Castlereagh (right). Behind are (?) Camden (left) and Melville (right). The four peers wear peer's robes. On the right, and in the foreground, separated from the 'Rock of Ages' by a narrow chasm, is the 'Broad-Bottom-Dunghill' [cf. BMSat 10530]. On this are the Opposition fleeing in terror from the thunderbolts from the Mande despite the gigantic figure of Fox who flies over them, protectingly spreading his cloak. Fox is naked under his cloak, except for a bonnet rouge, and a shroud which floats back from his head. He has webbed wings and a cloven hoof, and he looks up at the Mantle in angry terror. His cloak is set on fire by a thunderbolt. The most prominent of the 'Priests of Baal' is Grenville, who stoops, clutching at his rent breeches; a cardinal's hat flies from his head (cf. "Canning, as Phaeton, drives his chariot with four horses abreast on a curving track across the heavens, slanting upwards across the design from left. to r. On this are signs of the zodiac; other constellations of the zodiac are on the darkened sky, above and below the path of Phaeton; all assail him. The base of the design is part of the northern hemisphere, showing the world in flames, and flanked by the ghosts of Pitt and Fox. In the lower left. corner is the ghost of Pitt as Apollo (half length); he weeps, dropping his lyre, and raises his shroud to gaze up at his son, Phaeton. He is surrounded by heavy clouds. In the opposite corner, the head and shoulders of Fox as 'Pluto', holding a pitchfork, emerge from flames: he looks up with sinister anxiety at the conflict in the heavens. Canning's head is the centre of an irradiated sun: 'The Sun of Anti-Jacobinism.' He is heroic, youthful, and naked, except for floating draperies. Above him (l.) is a crescent moon. His horses have human heads set behind equine jaws and nostrils which jet flame. They are (l. to r.): Hawkesbury, Perceval, Castlereagh (with a profile expressive of nobility), Eldon (sub-human). Flame streams backwards from the chariot wheels; the wheels pass over the (dismantled) scales, 'Libra-Britannicus' [British justice], one scale inscribed 'Copenhagen'. Close behind the chariot the British Lion, 'Leo Britannicus', rushes furiously; on the chariot's track, facing the horses, is the Ram (faintly sketched). Behind this is Taurus, a ferocious Irish bull, snorting fire at the horses. His collar is inscribed 'Erin go Bragh'; from it flies a rosary; to his tail is tied a pot inscribed 'Emancipation'. The most conspicuous assailant of the horses is 'Scorpio Broad-Bottom', with the head of Grenville, the words inscribed on the two ferocious claws, in which his arms terminate. (He is the Scorpion who 'bends out his arms into two bows, . . . [and] spreads over the space of two signs'.) The body spirals into a barbed tail, emitting names close to Fox. Smaller claws terminate in human heads (below, l. to r.): Temple, Spencer (both spitting fire), Bedford; (above, l. to r.): Moira, Tierney. Covering Grenville's posterior is an irregular circle. In its centre is an irradiated ring enclosing a chalice with the Host; round this are irradiated heads: Grafton, Stanhope, Derby, Carlisle, Norfolk, Holland. "A companion print to British Museum Satires No. 10763, representing Ministerial and Opposition leaders on platforms in front of their booths. On the extreme left. is Sheridan addressing the crowd below: 'Walk in Gentlemen and Ladies - here is no deception. Just going to begin.' He points to his back-cloth which hangs from a flagstaff: under a bottle and glass is the inscription 'Prime Sherry Gratis - The Comedy of A New Way to Pay Old Debts [Massinger] - with the Publicans Friend.' Harlequin, masked, with a blackened face, postures behind him. The flag is inscribed 'In vino Veritas'. On the adjacent booth Castlereagh stands with upraised arms, holding a tali long-bow with two strings. Beside him a pierrot bangs a salt-box. His back-cloth is inscribed 'The Genuine Booth - Two Strings to your Bow [a popular farce by R. Jephson, 1791] and a Trip to Down [see British Museum Satires No. 10715]'. His flag is inscribed 'Down Down Hey Derry Down.' The centre booth has a tattered back-cloth inscribed 'The Old Broad Bottomd Booth rather out of repair But Excellent Entertainment.' Its flag, also tattered, is 'Catholic Emancipation'. On the platform Grenville bows very low, hat in hand. Beside him is a pierrot holding up a steaming bowl and a placard: 'Treasury Soup Hot at all Hours'. The next booth is 'The Only True Constitutional Booth Persevere & Company' the flag is 'No Popery'. On this Perceval, his back to Grenville, bows, saying, "Dont mind what the Broad Bottoms say good people - mine is the only treue constitutional Booth." He has two attendants, one holding 'Magna Charta' besides a man blowing a trumpet to which is attached a banner with the royal arms. On the extreme right., a little apart from Perceval's booth, is that of Canning. The back-cloth is inscribed: 'A Collection of Sky Rockets Just arrived from Denmark very Curious.' Rockets rising from behind the cloth descend in golden streams on the crowd below. Canning is in full armour and holds a tilting-lance; he says: "Don't be afraid they won't hurt you." His pennant is 'Necessity has no Law.' A man in the crowd, looking up at the rockets, says: "To tell you the truth I don't admire Sky." On the ground-level are side-shows under two of the platforms. That of Grenville is the roof of a square stone building; its door is placarded 'Portland Stone moveable Kitchen, a great Curiosity' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 10718]. No ladder ascends to the top, as with all the other booths, so that Grenville can descend only by stepping on to an adjacent platform. Beneath Perceval's platform is inscribed: 'Underneath to be seen the Bed of Roses' [see British Museum Satires No. 10558, &c.]. Among the crowd of gaping spectators are men crying their wares. They hold out broadsides. One (left) shouts: "Who buys my rotten Burrows if I'd as much money as I could tell I never would cry rotten Burrows to sell." A yokel in a smock asks him: "What do you ax Master for a good snug thing in your way." A man cries: "Who wants to buy any New Taxes"; a fat farmer says: "Dang it we have got enough of that Article". A Highlander in a kilt cries "Places and Pensions at half Price". A man offers a similar Highlander: "Snug Sinecures Dirt Cheap." A corpulent parson addresses a stout woman whose arm a much shorter man is holding: "Any more Church livings than you make use of I'll buy them of you." On the extreme right a quack doctor offers money-bags: 'Delicate Consciences effectively cured - no cure no Pay'."--British Museum online catalogue

"Perceval, in back view, and in barrister's wig and gown, holds a magic lantern by which he displays the Pope in the guise of a ragged beggar, for the benefit of John Bull and the King. George III is seated on the throne and looks at the screen through a telescope held by Eldon, inscribed 'Ill-done's Patent Magnifying Papascope'. The King, much alarmed at what he sees, clutches the mace which Eldon holds, with the Purse of the Great Seal attached to it. Beside the King (right) stand a bishop in back view, and a man wearing academic cap and gown. Perceval' s lantern is inscribed 'Percev[al] Humbu[g]'. Canning stands in front of it; Castlereagh beside it, both pointing at John Bull, a yokel in a smock, who has fallen to the ground in terror at the lantern-display, guineas falling from his pocket. The figure on the screen is an old man with patched robes, two keys hanging from a girdle, a sack of 'Bulls' on his back. In place of his triple crown he wears three hats like a Jewish old clothes' man, and for a crosier he has a branching stick. Close to the screen and with his back to it, Portland sits on a block of stone (cf. British Museum Satires No. 10718), talking to Hawkesbury. On the stone is drawn a wig on a block with the inscription 'Retrospective View of Portland' [i.e. as a former Whig]. In the shadow, between and behind Canning and Castlereagh, stands Melville in Highland dress; on his sporran: 'Ex Privy' [Counsellor]. Three other figures are not characterized. In the foreground a dog, its collar inscribed 'John Bull', is biting the 'Union Bill 1800', where it is headed by an Irish harp; a fragment, with the Royal Arms, has been torn off. The dog befouls a 'Catholic Petition'. On the wall is a large playbill: 'Theatre Royal St Stephens By his Majesty's Servants Feby 1807 Horrid Tragedy of Raw Head and Bloody Bones in a Red Cloak Mesrs Percivall, Canning, H-b-y [Harrowby], Portland Castlereagh Wonderful Deceptions, Messrs Proteus & Ill-done.'"--British Museum online catalogue
