"The 'Broad-Bottom Packet' sails through the mouth of a cave towards the distant shore, where the spirits of the departed stand waving a welcome. Its occupants, the defeated Ministers, are all naked. The torn sail is inscribed 'Catholic Emancipation'. To the top of the mast a cross, inscribed 'Ich dien', is bound with tricolour lashings, and is surmounted by the Prince's feathers, tied on with a tricolour ribbon inscribed 'Fitz[herbert]'. Moira stands with one hand on the mast, putting a cross to his lips; his eyes are fixed on the feathers (cf. BMSat 10253, &c.). In the stern (r.) sits St. Vincent, holding the tiller and shouting: "Avast - ! Trim ye Boat! or these damn'd Broad bottom'd Lubbers will overset us all." The boat is low on the port side where are the three vast Grenvilles, with the massive Sheridan beside them. Granule, waving a Cardinal's hat, holds a chalice, and addresses the posterior of his brother, all that appears, as he grovels at the bottom of the boat; this is marked with a cross and inscribed 'Ballast from Stow'. He says: "Courage Brother! - take Extreme Unction! & don't despair." Temple sits on the edge of the boat holding a paper: 'Stationary - Paymasr Office' [see BMSat 10721, &c]; his other papers trail in the water: 'Places', 'Pensions', 'Sinecures'; a bunch of pens floats away, as does a copy of the 'Morning Chronicle', the Whig newspaper. Next him, Erskine leans over the side vomiting 'Catholic Emetic'. In the water an open wig-box is floating inscribed 'Lord Double Bottoms his Wig Kings Bench': Lord Ellenborough's wig, inscribed on one side 'Loyalty', on the other 'Opposition', is falling into the water. Behind Erskine is the tall Howick standing with one foot on the gunwale and using a massive 'Whig Club' as a punt-pole. A cloak is attached to his shoulders by a tricolour ribbon. He says fiercely: "Better to Reign in Hell! - than Serve in Heaven!" In the bows stands little Lord Henry Petty, one simian foot on the gunwale, playing a dancing-master's fiddle or kit; under his foot is a paper, 'Dance Go to the Devil & shake Yourselves' [see BMSat 10589]. Below Howick is his brother-in-law, Whitbread, singing from a book of 'Wesleys Hyms', a frothing tankard of 'Whitbreads Entire' [cf. 10421] in his left hand. "Pitt is borne upwards (left to right) in a chariot of swirling clouds of flame drawn by four horses abreast, and snorting fire, while his eyes are fixed on a broad beam of light inscribed 'Immortality'. He flings down his mantle, which his disciples below hold up their arms to receive. The mantle is blue faced with red (the colours of the Windsor uniform); on it a flaming sword lies across a pair of balanced scales, symbolizing Justice. Rays from the mantle strike down on the disciples; thunderbolts radiate from it, against the 'Republican-Mantle' with which the ghost of Fox tries to shelter the Opposition, and also against a tiny Napoleon. The disciples are grouped on a cliff, 'The Rock of Ages', rising from the sea. They surround a rectangular altar, of quasi-classical shape: 'The Altar of the Constitution'. Its two pilasters are 'Prudence' and 'Fortitude'. On this is a book inscribed 'Truth' on which is a royal crown. At its base lies 'Magna Charta'. The central and most prominent of the disciples, in the place of Elisha, is Canning, as the pupil of Pitt (see BMSat 10972); he stands behind the altar. Before it kneel Eldon (left) in Chancellor's wig and gown with the Purse of the Great Seal, and Perceval (right) in the gown of the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Next to Eldon (left) kneels Portland. On each side of Canning stand Hawkesbury (left) and Castlereagh (right). Behind are (?) Camden (left) and Melville (right). The four peers wear peer's robes. On the right, and in the foreground, separated from the 'Rock of Ages' by a narrow chasm, is the 'Broad-Bottom-Dunghill' [cf. BMSat 10530]. On this are the Opposition fleeing in terror from the thunderbolts from the Mande despite the gigantic figure of Fox who flies over them, protectingly spreading his cloak. Fox is naked under his cloak, except for a bonnet rouge, and a shroud which floats back from his head. He has webbed wings and a cloven hoof, and he looks up at the Mantle in angry terror. His cloak is set on fire by a thunderbolt. The most prominent of the 'Priests of Baal' is Grenville, who stoops, clutching at his rent breeches; a cardinal's hat flies from his head (cf. "Canning, as Phaeton, drives his chariot with four horses abreast on a curving track across the heavens, slanting upwards across the design from left. to r. On this are signs of the zodiac; other constellations of the zodiac are on the darkened sky, above and below the path of Phaeton; all assail him. The base of the design is part of the northern hemisphere, showing the world in flames, and flanked by the ghosts of Pitt and Fox. In the lower left. corner is the ghost of Pitt as Apollo (half length); he weeps, dropping his lyre, and raises his shroud to gaze up at his son, Phaeton. He is surrounded by heavy clouds. In the opposite corner, the head and shoulders of Fox as 'Pluto', holding a pitchfork, emerge from flames: he looks up with sinister anxiety at the conflict in the heavens. Canning's head is the centre of an irradiated sun: 'The Sun of Anti-Jacobinism.' He is heroic, youthful, and naked, except for floating draperies. Above him (l.) is a crescent moon. His horses have human heads set behind equine jaws and nostrils which jet flame. They are (l. to r.): Hawkesbury, Perceval, Castlereagh (with a profile expressive of nobility), Eldon (sub-human). Flame streams backwards from the chariot wheels; the wheels pass over the (dismantled) scales, 'Libra-Britannicus' [British justice], one scale inscribed 'Copenhagen'. Close behind the chariot the British Lion, 'Leo Britannicus', rushes furiously; on the chariot's track, facing the horses, is the Ram (faintly sketched). Behind this is Taurus, a ferocious Irish bull, snorting fire at the horses. His collar is inscribed 'Erin go Bragh'; from it flies a rosary; to his tail is tied a pot inscribed 'Emancipation'. The most conspicuous assailant of the horses is 'Scorpio Broad-Bottom', with the head of Grenville, the words inscribed on the two ferocious claws, in which his arms terminate. (He is the Scorpion who 'bends out his arms into two bows, . . . [and] spreads over the space of two signs'.) The body spirals into a barbed tail, emitting names close to Fox. "A scene in the mouth of a cave with the sea in the background. The smuggler is Melville, in Highland dress, caught by Fox, Sheridan, and Whitbread, revenue officers wearing spurred top-boots. He kneels, with hands clasped, looking up at Whitbread (r.), who stands over him with a raised whip; he screams: "Marcy O' me wha can bear sick a lashing Indeed you shall ha it aw Gentlemen - ee'n to the last Baubee". Whitbread, his heavy lash inscribed 'Whitbreads Intire', answers: "Be quick then and dont trifle with us, we have got some more of your gang to look after!!" Fox (l.) is a spectator with his whip under his arm; he says: "I say lay it on well, remember he is an Old offender, we shall flog something out of him I am ready when you are tire'd." He stands by Sheridan, who holds Melville by the plaid, and raises a whip with a heavy lash inscribed 'Sherrys - Genuine - Stingo.' Sheridan says: "Aye! Aye! Whity and I will do his business, you are not quite active enough my Old friend - Come Sir where have you hid the rest of your Smuggled property?" In his pocket is a paper: 'The Forty Thieves desroy'd [sic] by . . .' On the extreme left., behind Fox, Pitt hastens forward with raised arms and alarmed expression; he exclaims: "O Lord! O Lord! what desperate hands my poor Friend has got into." In the middle distance (r.) Trotter, also in Highland dress, runs off to the right. with a large sack on his shoulders, inscribed 'Peculation Sack 50.000'; guineas fall from a rent in the sack. He looks over his shoulder, saying, "It will come to my turn Next so I'll trot off in time with this Triffle." "Melville (l.) stands by a pile of bricks, each marked with a coronet (except one with a mitre), and the words 'Not Guilty'. These he is hurling with great vigour at (some of) the managers of the impeachment who flee in disorder, to the right., putting up their arms to fend off the missiles. He wears Highland dress with a magnificently feathered bonnet; his plaid swirls out. He says, the words in a large label: '"Self-preservation's Heaven's eldest law. "Imprest upon our Nature with our life, "In Characters indelible, who shrinks "From this great cause is wanting to his righteason: "But when our Honor is traduc'd and stab'd at, "T'is Virtue, t'is heroic Fortitude, "Then to encounter violence with Force.' His bricks are stacked on a fringed carpet on which is the motto 'Dieu et m[on] Droit'. Sheridan, the hindmost, protects himself with his hat, and says: "Why Charley! I am afraid we have drank too much of this cursed Entire." Just in front of him is Whitbread, an 'Essay on Brewing' [cf. BMSat 10574] projecting from his coat-pocket. Fox, next, turns to protect himself; in front Howick (Whitbread's brother-in-law) grovels on the ground, grasping the edge of a large upright cask of 'Whitbread's Entire' [see BMSat 10421]. Into this Lord Temple, one of the Managers of the Impeachment, is plunging head first, displaying bulky breeches inscribed 'Temple of Hymen'. Behind stands a man in gown and bands, evidently Dr. Laurence. Beside Whitbread and Howick are overturned tankards of 'Whitbreads Entire' [a few letters only of the inscription being visible], spilling their contents. In the background, against the corner of Westminster Hall, whose doorway is behind Melville, is a rectangular tank: 'Brown Stout Cooler'; in this men are frantically splashing. The sun emerges from a gap in dark clouds irradiating Melville; in its disk is the profile head of George III. (An allusion to his father, Lord Holland, as the 'public defaulter of unaccounted millions', a gibe recurring over a long period, referring to the City Petition of 1769, cf. British Museum Satires No. 9739, &c.) Beside him a man in Highland dress, resembling Lauderdale, leans against the building, watching the outrage with frank pleasure. From a broken first-floor window leans Wilberforce, a sour sectary in a steeple-crowned hat inscribed 'Puritanism'. His hands are clasped; he says: "I say. Amen to all Cantwell." Above his head is a placard: 'Hymns & Spiritual Songs on the Slave Trade by St Wilber.' From his window projects a sign-board with a bust profile portrait of St. Vincent, hunch-backed and wearing a ribbon, inscribed 'System of Terror' and 'Hoc Signo non Vincent.' [Parodying the often-quoted in 'hoc signo vinces', the inscription on a vision of a fiery cross, to which legend attributed the conversion of Constantine. The 'non' is added inconspicuously with a caret.] On the building is a torn placard: 'performed The Tragedy Timon of [Athens] Lord Timon Mr Melville Lucullus a false friend & Kinsman Mr Kinhard [Kinnaird] little more than Kin and less than kind Scotch Reel &c.' Facing the ale-house, and on the extreme left, is the corner of the poop of a ship, the Romney. From this projects a hand aiming a blunderbuss inscribed 'Pophams Defence' at the sign-board; a blast of flame and smoke issues from it. On the ship is a board inscribed 'Wanted Supply of naval Stores Inquire within'.
