Abstract:: "Three men sit, singing a catch, with a round table between them. A British officer (perhaps Cotton), wearing a cocked hat, sits in profile to the right, facing Dalrymple who sits (right) with tightly closed mouth, his hands on his knees. Between them, but with his chair from Dalrymple, sits a man in Spanish (here Portuguese) dress, wearing a feathered hat. The British officer sings: T'was You Sir-Hew - Twas Hew. that let the French Escape, That makes you look so blue Sir-Hew Sir Hew! He and the Portuguese (perhaps Freire) point minatory hands at Dalrymple, whose face is painted lead colour. On the wall are two pictures: (above the Portuguese) 'A correct representation of the French Plunderers stopt in their progress by the Spanish Patriots.' [at Baylen] and (above Dalrymple): 'A Correct representation of the French Plunderers quitting Portugal for France - under a British Escort.' In one a long train of wagons is stopped by armed men, in the other are ships in full sail. On the table are glasses and decanters of 'Port and Calcavella'."--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:: "Bonaparte (left) and Cornwallis play chess. Bonaparte, not caricatured, alert and military, wearing his large plumed cocked hat, leans forward, pointing to his move; his left arm lies on the table and in his left hand is his sheathed sabre. He says: "Check to your King, remember it is not the first time, and I think a very few Manoeuvres more will completely convince you that I am better acquainted with the Game I am playing than you are aware of." Cornwallis, plump and civilian despite his regimentals and profession, sits without a hat, scratching his head apprehensively. He says: "Curse it I shall lose this Game; You are too much for me." He wears his ribbon and star, 'Honi soit' on his garter. The chairs are symbolical: that of Bonaparte has ormolu laurel wreaths, the legs are formed of fasces and axes; that of Cornwallis, with plain oval back, suggests an English drawing-room."--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:: "The interior of a tent. Duroc, in his shirt, lies supported by a soldier on a wooden bed, while Napoleon (right) holds his right hand, turning away (to the right) and covering his face with his left hand. An officer stands solicitously beside the Emperor, supporting his left elbow. Another officer stands (left) behind the head of the low bed. On the extreme left a soldier bends over a table compounding medicaments. Duroc's coat and sword lie on a camp-stool, beside his hat and boots. A glimpse of the distant camp is seen on the extreme right, where a Mameluke stands by the tent holding Napoleon's horse. Duroc is addressing the Emperor, with his left arm extended. Their words are etched below the title: "Duroc, "My whole life has been consecrated to your service, nor do I regret its loss, but for the use it still might have been of to your Buonaparte, "Duroc!" there is a life to come; it is there you are going to wait for me, and where we shall one day meet again!" Duroc, "Yes Sire! but that will not be these thirty years, when you will have triumphed over your enimies [sic], and realised all the hopes of your country, I have lived an honest man: I have nothing to reproach myself with, ah! Abstract:: "French soldiers are being cooked or drowned in a big round vat built of stone, under which a fire is burning. Blücher (left) and Wellington (right) stand over the vat, holding long-handled perforated ladles with which they skim the surface of the water, fishing out the soldiers. Blücher (left), saying "Mon cher Welington je commence a écumer j'espere que vous me Seconderez," holds on his level ladle a hussar in large busby, braided tunic, and boots. Wellington holds up on his (tilted) ladle a man hanging head downwards. Beside the vat (right) is a rocky cone from a fissure in which the flames of Hell emerge; Cerberus, a monster with three serpentine necks and webbed wings, reaches from the opening towards Wellington's captive, and devours his legs with two of his great jaws. Wellington answers: "mon ami Blucher je sais pret a vous suivre mais surtout travaille fort cette nuit." Other soldiers struggle to get out or sink back hopelessly. An eagle (standard) projects from the water, on which float many tricolour cockades. Wellington's victim, who has a moustache, is not Napoleon, who is a subordinate figure, struggling to get out, and extending his arms towards Wellington."--British Museum online catalogue
