Manuscript on paper, composed of two segments, formerly separate books. Part I: 1) Letter from Inigo Lopez de Mendoza, Marques de Santillana (1398-1458), to his nephew Pedro de Mendoza, Senor de almacan. Santillana promises to send a copy of his own sonnets, some proverbs, and sayings of the philosophers and of Seneca which Mendoza had requested, and discusses a translation of a letter of Seneca sent to him by Mendoza. 2) Reply of Mendoza to Santillana, about Santillana's Sonnets. Artt. 3-25: sonnets by Santillana. Part II: 26) Pseudo-Seneca, Proverbia, Castilian tr. perhaps by Pedro Diaz de Toledo (d. 1499), Counsellor to Juan II of Castile, Chaplain to the Marques de Santillana, and later first bishop of Malaga. In Latin., Script: Written in a regular heavy hybrida formata script with features of bastarda by a single scribe who placed small circular flourishes above the letter u., 10-line illuminated initial on f. 5r, blue and mauve with white designs and highlights on gold cusped ground, a blue and gold bar border extending into the left-hand margin and terminating in acanthus leaves in the lower margin; interior of initial in orange, blue and gold checkered pattern. Fine red and blue divided initials, 8- to 7-line, with parchment designs and extensive pale purple flourishes, for major texts. Smaller plain initials in red or blue with parchment designs. Headings and initial strokes in red. Some instructions to rubricator in outer margins., and Binding: ca. 1500, Belgium. Covered in brown calf with corner tongues over wooden boards, a central panel diapered with blind-tooled triple fillets. Center and corner fittings and title written in a careful gothic bookhand under a brass-framed window on the upper board: "liber gloriose uirginis et martyris christi barbare". Lower board cut in for the straps which are attached with metal plates. Hasps of a chain on the lower board. Rebacked.

In Latin., Watermarks: similar to Briquet Tour 15909 and Piccard Turm II.617., Script: Written in gothic cursive with humanistic features by a single scribe, above top line., Illuminated initial, f. 1r, 8-line, blue with white highlights and burnished gold on gold ground with stylized foliage in green and dark red with yellow highlights. Terminals ending in foliage serifs, red, green with yellow highlights, and gold balls with hairline extensions. Numerous pen and ink initials, 3-line, alternate red and bright blue with penwork designs of the other color extending along margin., and Binding: Fifteenth century, Italy. Parchment stays are adhered to inner and outer conjugate leaves of quires. Original wound sewing on three tawed skin, slit straps laid in channels on the outside of beech boards. The endbands, which are wanting, were sewn on tawed skin cores laid in grooves and nailed or held in place by the bosses; they were tied down through a tawed skin spine lining. Covered in sheepskin, originally brick red, with the surface now badly rubbed and shedding. Corner tongues. Blind-tooled with an X in concentric frames. Four leaf-shaped catches with three flowers on each on the lower board, one wanting; the upper board cut in for two kermes pink straps attached with star-headed nails. Five flower-shaped bosses on each board and the trace of a chain attachment at the tail of the lower one.

Scribe 1) ff. 1r-156v; Scribe 2) ff. 157r-274r; Scribe 3, Laurence of Mechlin, wrote ff. 274r-317r and dated the codex 1452., Plain initials in red and rubrics throughout., and Binding: Fifteenth century. Original sewing on five slit, tawed straps laced into wooden boards. Endband cores laid in grooves. Covered with white, tawed skin, blind-tooled with a St. Andrew's cross within panel borders. The covering leather is sewn around the endbands, from spine to edges, with a back-stitch. Traces of round bosses, probably brass, and of two strap and pin fastenings, the pins on the upper board.
