A sailor sits on the ground outside a house from which a man (doctor) emerges to offer assistance. He has an amused look on his face as he holds his broken peg leg. One of his two companions puts up his hand to hold off the assistance of the doctor as his other companion beckons to a carpenter who carries a plank of wood and a saw in addition to his lunch pail. A woman stands at the window looking out on the scene, her finger to her nose and a slight smile on her face. A small dog walks along the road beside the approaching carpenter

"Six groups of three persons (wife, husband, and lover) arranged in two rows, their words (not transcribed) etched above their heads. [1] A pretty young woman walking with an ugly and elderly husband makes an assignation with a military officer. [2] A shoemaker with a strap interrupts a French barber making love to his wife. [3] A young woman points to her fat old husband asleep in a chair, saying to a barrister, "Take care or you'll wake him". He says: "Remember my dear Madam how well I pleaded your last cause". [5] A handsome young clergyman sits on a sofa with a young woman, their arms round each other's shoulders, eyes closed, while a fat elderly parson gapes at them with horror, saying, "Here's a pretty scandal to the Cloth!!" Abstract:
A scene from Tristram Shandy in which Susannah stands holdings her nose with her right hand while in her left she holds a candle over the cradle where the swaddled infant Tristram lies with a plaster on his nose. She addressed the doctor with obvious fury, her mouth agape. On the left Dr. Slop raises his left fist at her while in his right he holds a cataplasm in a ladle, ready to fling at her. His hat lies at his feet, and his wig is ablaze. Obadiah stands behind him carrying in his hands a chamber pot and a bowl, a medicine bottle tucked under his arm. The two men stand before a screen. The walls of the room are hung with portraits and a mirror; a grandfather's clock showing the time as 6:15 stands against the wall behind the cradle and Susannah. Two medicine bottles sit on a table partially hidden behind the screen. In the foreground lies an over-turned chair
