"Fox and Sheridan (left) sit together at the head of a rectangular table on which is a punch-bowl, &c, looking with dismay at whigs (right), who advance to hurl their wigs at a large pile of wigs on the left (inscribed 'The Heads having Scratched out of the Club'), or retire, having already done so. Fox and Sheridan wear enormous wigs, the former says, "Brother: Brother: we are all in the wrong" ... Before Fox is a list with names scored through. Sheridan grasps a bottle of 'Sherry'. A couple advance together, in the act of hurling their large wigs at the pile; one says, "I will Scratch out my Name in hopes of getting in for the City" (probably Nathaniel Newnham, returned for the City 1784, but defeated in 1790, cf. British Museum satires no. 7162). The other is perhaps Windham. The only one of the retiring wigless Whigs who is characterized is Burke. All say: "We have erased our Names for ever from the Club, when the Artful & Ambitious designs of a Faction are carried on under a Mask of Prudential Reform & when the leading Members are Notoriously known to Carry on a secret Correspondence with the Avowed Enemies of the Constitution they Affect to Support & Defend it is high time for all prudent & real friends to that Constitution to leave them to their Just Punishment, the Contemp of all true Friends to their King and Constitution."--British Museum online catalogue

"Fox as Abdallah, captain of the thieves, leads his band towards the treasure-cave; he stands in profile to the right., facing the cave where a Chancellor's gown and a Chief Justice's gown are suspended. On a table decorated with the Royal Arms are three coronets; in front of it, two sacks of 'Cash', a mace, large rolls of parchment inscribed 'Places' and 'Pensions'. The thieves all wear jewelled turbans with aigrettes, Turkisn trousers tucked into boots, zouave jackets edged with fur over short sleeves. Each holds a sabre. Fox exclaims "Open Sesame." The thieves are crowded together behind Fox and Sheridan, who points to the cave, turning round to say: "Glorious spoils comrades in this Cavern of Ours, surely there is enoug to satisfy us all, I long to lead a sober steady Life." The other thieves are not characterized, and it is not clear to which speaker the different speeches belong. Behind and between Sheridan and Fox is Sidmouth saying: "Blister me [cf. BMSat 9849] if I dont think my exploits deserve that roll of Parchment." Windham (regarded as a war-monger, cf. BMSat 9871), says: "I should like a little cutting and slashing befor I left off Buisiness!" The Marquis of Buckingham, indicated by spectacles, says: "If the Cady will but make me a Viceroy ill give up this buisiness at once." This speech is also connected with Bedford's profile Next the head of the latter is that of the tall Moira. Erskine (1.) says: "I'll take the black gown trim'd with gold, and the valuble [the mace] that belongs to it. for my share". An unappropriated speech must belong to Ellenborough (not discoverable): "Well I'll take the one with the Fur upon it, and some thing to make up for the want of Gold trimming." Others of the band are little Lord Henry Petty looking up at Sheridan and the bulky Grenville with his sabre resting on his shoulder. "The Duke and Duchess of York face each other, a small table between them; he sits (left), with his hands clasped and resting on the table; she stands (right), a small jewel-box in her left hand, holding out to him a string of jewels. A paper inscribed '17,000 . . .' lies on the table beside the Duke, whose words are etched above his head: 'Henceforth my follies and neglects shall cease And all to come be penitence and peace, Vice shall no more atract me with her Charms, Nor pleasure reach me, but in those dear arms.' "The reduction of the Prince of Wales's establishment at Carlton House is represented as the auction scene in 'The School for Scandal' (iv. 1). 'Lot 1', a portrait of the King and Queen, as a farmer and his wife, a copy of BMSat 6934 reversed, is being held up for sale by (?) Sheridan. The Prince, as Charles Surface, stands in the middle of the room, legs apart, his cane raised above his head, right hand in his breeches-pocket, saying, "Careless, Knock down the Farmer". George Hanger as Careless stands in a high-backed arm-chair (right), his hammer raised above his head, saying, "Going for no more than One Crown". Weltje, a stout man, stands beside the rostrum, his arms folded, looking down at a pile of plate at his feet inscribed 'Lot 6'. On the left stand three men: the bidder, pencil and note-book in his hand, saying, "Five shillings for that Lot", and two military officers, one stout, the other slim and foppish, looking through an eye-glass at the picture. 'Lot 2' and 'Lot 3' are pictures still on the wall, Three quarter length portraits of Mrs. Fitzherbert, her hands in a muff, and a lady wearing a large feathered hat, perhaps the Duchess of Devonshire, cf. BMSat 6961, &c. 'Lot 5' is a saddle on the floor beside a pair of top-boots. "The Duke (left) and Duchess of St. Albans stand facing each other; the little Duke staggering under an ornamental basket which supports a side of bacon, inscribed Best Wiltshire. The Duchess holds on her shoulder a cutter in which are seated six oarsmen with oars held erect, and a helmsman. The Duke is dressed as Grand Falconer (see British Museum Satires No. 15596) and wears a hood with bells indicating both a fool's cap and the hood and bells of falconry. Two speeches float from his head: [1] "In love connubial, formed to live and last, This gift records a blissful twelvemonth past We claim, then boldly claim the flitch Dunmow First of the blest, who keep the marriag Vow". [2] I thought the flitch to small a present on this auspicious day so I have brought the Gammon with it Love. The Duchess answers: Thanks for your Bacon Duke well have you Saved it - and in return accept of this small Testimony of my affection. She wears Court dress, coronet, and feathers. The boatmen wear yellow and green liveries, and on the prow is a falcon's head; the back of the seat in the stern is decorated with a falcon perched on a melon resting on a heap of sovereigns. In the foreground are spectators: on the left the Dukes of Cumberland (wearing his hat) and Sussex stand together with Prince Leopold behind them; on the right is Sir Francis Burdett (son-in-law of Coutts), very thin, surprised, and displeased. In the background are other spectators, their heads concealed by the boat, and on the right a group of singers, some in Tyrolean costume, with (?) "George IV, dressed as Henry VIII and with cavalry boots decorated with rosettes, sits on the throne (right), shrinking angrily from oxen wearing civic gowns who bow, presenting petitions. All the horns of the oxen are tipped with tiny caps resembling caps of Liberty; a slightly larger pair protects the prongs of a fork held up on the extreme left above the massed heads of the beasts. On this a placard is speared: 'Petitions from every Part of the World--(Hole's and Corner's excepted) to Dismiss the Ministers-- signed by upwards of 999,999--Millions of the Brute Creation.' The petitions of the four beasts in the front row are headed: 'Petition of Lord Mayor & Citizens of London to Dismiss Ministers'; 'Petitions from every part of England & Wales to Dismiss Ministers &c &c &c'; '. . . ions from every Part of Scotland to Dismiss Ministers &c &c &c'; 'Petitions from every part of Ireland . . . [ut supra]'. Hooves rise from cattle behind holding more petitions: 'from Europe'; 'From Asia'; 'from Africa'; 'from America'; 'from every Honest Man'. The canopied throne is raised on a dais of three steps, the footstool is a cushion supported on a (carved) elephant; but the King's feet are drawn back. His right hand is on his hip; he holds an oddly shaped sceptre in the left hand. The back of the throne is framed by carved mannikins with shackled hands and feet; a large crown rests on the heads of the two uppermost. The back of the canopy has a pattern of writhing serpents. Ministers, much caricatured, stand on the right and left of the dais. In the foreground (right) and on the King's left, Wellington, with the apron and steel of a butcher (as in British Museum Satires No. 13288), with gauntlet gloves and with a star on his tunic, holds a blood-stained battle-axe. Sidmouth, as Court-fool, sits in profile to the left on an apothecary's mortar, wearing a double-peaked fool's cap and a star, and holding a bladder which is his clyster-pipe. Behind is Eldon, scowling savagely and holding the mace and the Purse of the Great Seal. A bishop holding a crosier stands on either side of the throne, behind the Ministers. A staff supports an emblematical cask which a naked Bacchus bestrides. On the King's right is Liverpool, holding a tall staff to which a green bag is tied (see British Museum Satires No. 13735). Next him is Castlereagh, blandly sinister, holding a scourge, and with a bunch of keys hanging from his belt; he stares at the petitioners. A tiny Vansittart is beside him, in his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown, with an 'X' on his breast above a chequered pattern, hung diamond-wise. Immensely fat and absurd beefeaters stand along the back of the room under quasi-Gothic windows of stained glass. All hold tridents and turn their eyes towards the petitioners, grinning grotesquely. Each window is centred by an escutcheon on which a decanter is the chief object. The upper part of each is filled by a design of three large peacock's feathers (see British Museum Satires No. 13299). The Gothic roof, caricaturing that at Carlton House (cf. British Museum Satires No. 11727), is filled with tracery in the form of antlers."--British Museum online catalogue

The Ministers are engaged on 'Plans for Divorce', a paper so inscribed is on the table; all register terror. The Archbishop of Canterbury says "The Lord have mercy on our vicked Souls," the pious Liverpool says "Amen." All are broadly burlesqued, with goggling eyes and large heads in the manner of Woodward's 'Long Heads' or 'Lilliputians' (cf. British Museum satires nos. 10604, 10889).
