"Two chairmen carry (left to right) a lady in a sedan chair. The roof is raised and through it projects an enormous ostrich feather, rising from an aigrette and curls, which also extend above the roof. To the second chairman's back is strapped the base of a long curving rod which supports an umbrella to protect the feather. Through the window of the chair appears the lady's profile. She holds a half-closed fan before her face. Behind (left) is a plain town house of three stories behind its area-railings; it is next a high curving wall (right). Probably from a design by an amateur."--British Museum online catalogue.

"The head and shoulders of a woman, caricatured, in profile to the right, singing with upturned eyes, holding up a paper in both hands. A wing, foreshortened, and very freely sketched, extends diagonally across her shoulder, and has some resemblance to a part of her dress; her hair is loosely arranged, but its contour is fashionable; her face is blotched with drink. Clouds and a ray of light are indicated in the background."--British Museum online catalogue.

"An elderly man in old-fashioned dress stands at his desk, his right hand on an open ledger, looking down with a calculating grimace. He wears a night-cap and slippers; a pen is behind his ear. His high stool is behind him. In the background another elderly man writes seated at a desk. Papers spiked on files hang from the wall, and lie on the floor, with folio volumes. An 'Invoice' is pasted on the wall. Above a high shelf is the date '1800' etched over '1787', with 'R. 1788'."--British Museum online catalogue.

"The instrumentalists are closely grouped round the armchair of the father of the family, a stout man in old-fashioned dress, who sits full face singing loudly, an open music book on his knees, his feet supported on the bar of his chair. His very fat wife sits beside him (right) blowing a trumpet to the grotesque inflation of cheek and neck. The eldest daughter (left) plays the double-bass; behind her stands a girl beating a tambourine. The younger children flank the design: a fat little girl (left) plays the triangle, looking up at her sister's tambourine. On the right a little boy sits at his mother's feet beating a large kettle-drum and shouting; he sits on two large volumes: 'Doctor Burneys Musical Travels [i.e., The Present State of Music in France and Italy ... 1771', and 'The Present State of Music in Germany . . . [etc.]', 2 v. 1773]. Mother and daughters are fashionably dressed; the daughters are comely. A howling dog seated on the extreme left adds to the impression of violent noise."--British Museum online catalogue.
