"A burlesqued tailor with a huge paunch and small legs stands in profile to the left, facing a gale and rain, encumbered with a little girl clinging to his neck, and by large roll of cloth under the right arm; he tries to open his umbrella, having placed his cane between his legs; tied to the handle in a handkerchief are books of patterns, which are blowing away, like his wig, hat, and the child's bonnet; his coat, with tape-measure, streams behind him ..." "In a bare room with a raftered roof couples are energetically dancing, holding hands behind their backs, or above their heads. The women, with one exception, are young and handsome, the men ugly and plebeian. A seated fiddler plays with closed eyes (right). Through a doorway partly covered with curtains the bride and bridegroom are seen embracing. On the wall is a placard: 'They dance in a round, cutting capers and ramping. A mercy the ground did not burst with their stamping.The floor is all wett, with leaps and with jumps, while the water and sweat, splish splash in their pumps'."--British Museum online catalogue, description of an earlier state

"A young woman walks mincingly (left to right), her left hand extended, in her right is a large closed fan. Check or tartan ribbons form the crown of her hat and the bows with which it is trimmed. A similar tartan is worn as a pelerine, crossed at the waist and tied in a bow, long voluminous ends hanging down the back of her dress. A tartan ribbon is tied to the handle of her fan. From the brim of her hat, in which is an erect ostrich feather, hangs a transparent curtain of gauze. Her hair, cut short across the forehead, hangs down her back in a long queue, tied up at the end with a bow. There is a landscape background."--British Museum online catalogue
