In French., Script: Written by Vincent Philippon in elegant upright batarde., One undistinguished miniature (f. 1r), a falconer standing on a shallow ground, with some blue tinting for sky, set between blue and red columns with gold highlights; a blue and red band above inscribed in gold: "VRAI LVI SERAI AMI." A large coat of arms on f. ii verso (possibly a later addition and now effaced) supported by two angels with a miter above, in brown ink. One blue and red initial (f. 1r), 3- line, against a gold ground. 6- to 1-line initials throughout, brushed gold against blue or red grounds; line-endings, blue or red with gold highlights. Rubrics throughout., and Binding: 16th-17th centuries. Original sewing on three tawed, slit straps laced in and out of the boards. The spine is square. Covered in brown calf, blind-tooled with vertical lines of square and diamond shaped tools in a border of flowers in squares. Two ribbon fastenings. The upper board is broken down the center and sewn together. Half the lower board, endbands, ties and leather around the edges of the boards wanting.

Description:
Iohannes Baers (Baersius), born in Ghent 1580, d. 1653, studied theology in Leiden, was minister in various places in the Northern Netherlands, was 1629 in Pernambuco (Brasil) and in 1632 back in the Netherlands minister in Soest. He is the author of two books in Dutch, published in 1648 and 1653 respectively, but his poetic paraphrase of Lamentations seems to be unrecorded. Whether this work was finished in 1601 or 1605 is not clear. This Carmelite monk in Ghent, named Paschasius Baers, became after his conversion minister in Zele (East Flanders) and from 1580 onwards in various places in the Netherlands; from 1590 to 1603 he was active in Leeuwarden., In Latin., Script: Written by a single scribe in careful Humanistica Cursiva. Titles and running titles are in a larger size of the same script., and Binding: Original limp vellum, both covers decorated with a simple blind-tooled frame and four small gilt fleurons in the corners. Remains of two green silk ties. Gold-tooled inscriptions in capitals, on front cover: ".SERO.SED.SERIO."; on rear cover "ANNO.1601." Inscription in ink on the spine: "Lamentationes ***********". Edges gilt.

Land grant, manuscript on parchment, originally made to Alonzo Prieto, and awarded after his death to his brother Gonzalo Prieto, following litigation. The grant, valued at 35,000 maravedis annually, was given to defray the costs of preparing land and naval forces to protect Spain and the Catholic Church, particularly from the "Gran Turco" ( Süleyman I). Four ships carrying gold and silver were to arrive from Peru to support this. The text refers to places and dates in the years 1535-1536. The end of the document, apparently written when the authorizing signatures were added, gives the location as Valladolid, and the date as 27 February 1537

In Latin., Script: Copied by one hand writing an imperfect Humanistica Textualis with a relatively large number of abbreviations, incomplete word separations, hesitations, errors and corrections making reading sometimes difficult in spite of the formal character of the writing., Spaces and guide-letters for initials (3-line on ff.1r and 2r, the others 2-line); the initials are not executed., and Binding: Of undetermined age. Half light brown leather over original (?) unbevelled wooden boards, the leather decorated with fillets in a geometrical checkered pattern. Spine with four raised bands. Modern parchment pastedowns covering the inner half of the boards.

In the middle section of the manuscript the chapter headings are marked by a pointing hand; in the final section (ff. 20r-22v) horse-headed (?) dividers are used. On f. 1r 11-line historiated initial on gold background containing a profile portrait of Jacopone da Todi with nimbus and holding medallion with the "Jesus"-monogram; the initial has floral extensions in the inner margin.
