Contemporary inscription, in gold, in upper margin of f. 2r was apparently added by Genevra Nogarola (1419-1465?). and Manuscript on parchment of Part I: Excerpts from Seneca, Phaedra. Part II: Justinus, Epitoma historiarum Pompei Trogi.

Acquired from L. C. Witten in 1954 by Thomas E. Marston., Binding: Nineteenth century, Italy. Rigid vellum binding, gold-tooled. Traces of turn-ins and bosses from earlier binding on f. 130 and possibly on f. 1., One large illuminated initial, f. 3r, 9-line, pink with white highlights on irregular angular ground, blue with white filigree and a thin white line outlining the ground. Filled with a stylized interlacing pattern of white vine-stem, white with green and yellow shading against gold ground. Numerous small initials, 3-line, yellow, on blue or blue and pink grounds with white filigree. Initial heading in gold; running headlines for book numbers in red., and Script: Part I (ff. 1-2, palimpsest): Written by several scribes in humanistic bookhand; for the passages from Seneca, the initial letter for each verse is set between vertical bounding lines. Part II (ff. 3-130): Written by a single scribe, below top line, in humanistic bookhand that sits somewhat above the ruled line; the conclusion of the text on ff. 129v-130r was added by a different hand.

Description:
Binding: 17th-18th centuries. Brown/red calf, gold-tooled. Paste decorated edges. On spine, stamped in gold but nearly effaced: "Ciceronis et aliorum varia. MSS 1465"., Initials, 5- to 2-line, ff. 1r, 39v, 71r (space for additional initials on ff. 105v and 149r), gold edged in black with white-vine ornament, against crimson, green and light blue; white-vine extensions in upper and inner margins. On f. 1r a coat of arms in lower margin surrounded by a wreath with a ribbon. 3-, 2-, and 1-line initials in red or blue. Rubrics throughout., Script: Written in humanistic bookhand below the top line by two persons: Scribe 1) ff. 1r-128r and 149r-191v; Scribe 2) ff. 129r-148v and 192r-207v., and Water damage has obliterated several words in the lower left of f. 1r.

In Latin., Script: Copied by various hands in Iberian Praegothica., The original sections (articles 1, 2, 7 and 8) have red headings and red decorative line-fillers; 1-line plain initials and numerous 2-line (sometimes 3- or 4-line) plain or flourished initials or litterae duplices intermingled. Many round initials such as C, D, O, Q are filled with a human face ("face initials"); in art. 7 some initials I are zoomorphic and take the shape of a fish (ff. 127r, 134r). Red and purple initials normally alternate. Art. 4 has red initials. The remaining articles are undecorated., Lower edge of many leaves damaged, with loss of text. The final pages worn and smudged., and Binding: ca. 1800. Limp parchment with remains of two leather ties. On the spine the hand-written title "Charta charitatis, liber usuum et institut. Ordinis S. Bernardi. M.S." At the bottom of the spine a label with the handwritten modern number "1280".

Binding: ca. 1500, Belgium. Covered in brown calf with corner tongues over wooden boards, a central panel diapered with blind-tooled triple fillets. Center and corner fittings and title written in a careful gothic bookhand under a brass-framed window on the upper board: "liber gloriose uirginis et martyris christi barbare". Lower board cut in for the straps which are attached with metal plates. Hasps of a chain on the lower board. Rebacked. and Script: Written in a regular heavy hybrida formata script with features of bastarda by a single scribe who placed small circular flourishes above the letter u.

Witten who sold it in the same year to Thomas E. Marston., Script: Written in round humanistic bookhand by two scribes who use somewhat different physical formats. Scribe I) ff. 1r-16r, written above top line, with initials for paragraphs set apart from the text between outer vertical bounding lines. Scribe 2) ff. 16v-26v, written below top line and leaving blank the final line of written space., and Two illuminated initials on ff. 1r and 2r, 5-line and 3-line, gold on blue, green and pale mauve ground with white vine-stem ornament and grey-green dots. On f. 1r vine-stem ornament on blue ground extends into inner margin (3-lines) to form partial border. Possibly by the same artist who executed the initials in Marston MS 257.

In Latin., Script: Copied by a group of scribes, all writing a more or less careful Italian Late Carolingian script. There are numerous and extensive alterations and corrections on erasure. Headings in a mixture of Capitals and Uncials., Headings in red. Initials of various styles: (1) plain Romanesque initials, sometimes with developed decoration, in red; (2) more or less large painted initials in various bright colours on coloured background and filled with white vinestem; the body of the letter often filled with various interlace and frets; the vinestem may be issuing from an animal's mouth. Special forms of these painted initials: ff. 88v (wheel-shape), 90r (a snake winding round the shafts of the letter), 126r (outline drawing of vinestem initial), 136v (zoomorphic: bird-shape), 186v (inhabited by two birds), 204v (zoomorphic: dragon-shape), 209r (idem, with head at both ends), 215v (zoomorphic: fish), 216r (zoomorphic: dragon with head at both ends), 222v (inhabited by two birds), 268v (partly zoomorphic: bird), 274v (historiated: head of St. Paul). Initials are lacking f. 197v, 201v., and Binding: Original doeskin over heavy unbevelled wooden boards. On each cover traces of five circular bosses; traces of two straps fixed to the rear cover and clutching over pins in the front cover. On the front cover an inscription largely worn off: "Remigius super epistolas sancti Pauli" (13th century?).

Acquired from E. Rossignol of Paris in 1958 by L. C. Witten, who sold it the same year to Thomas E. Marston., Binding: 1800-1810, Italy. Half bound in brown calf with bright pink paper sides. Three green gold-tooled labels on the spine of each volume: "Vol. I", "Vol. II"; "Hieronimi in XII Prophetas Manuscrip"; "Saecul XII". Title on black gold-tooled labels: "Hieronimi in XII Prophetas Manuscrip". Edges spattered blue-green. The same distinctive bindings also found on Marston MSS 50, 125, 128, 135, 151, 153, 158, and 159, all of Hautecombe provenance., Fine painted initials, 19- to 5-line, for major text divisions, monochrome red or polychrome in red, bright green, olive green and/or brown, with pale yellow washes. Preliminary sketches in lead often visible underneath; some bows appear to be drawn with compass. Smaller initials of similar design throughout. Initials are characterized by lattice work, acanthus scrolls and decorative empty spaces within initials. The opening initial on f. 1r is executed in red and blue. Headings in red throughout., and Script: Written and neatly corrected in early gothic bookhand by several scribes.

Binding: Fifteenth century, Italy. Parchment stays are adhered to inner and outer conjugate leaves of quires. Original wound sewing on three tawed skin, slit straps laid in channels on the outside of beech boards. The endbands, which are wanting, were sewn on tawed skin cores laid in grooves and nailed or held in place by the bosses; they were tied down through a tawed skin spine lining. Covered in sheepskin, originally brick red, with the surface now badly rubbed and shedding. Corner tongues. Blind-tooled with an X in concentric frames. Four leaf-shaped catches with three flowers on each on the lower board, one wanting; the upper board cut in for two kermes pink straps attached with star-headed nails. Five flower-shaped bosses on each board and the trace of a chain attachment at the tail of the lower one., Illuminated initial, f. 1r, 8-line, blue with white highlights and burnished gold on gold ground with stylized foliage in green and dark red with yellow highlights. Terminals ending in foliage serifs, red, green with yellow highlights, and gold balls with hairline extensions. Numerous pen and ink initials, 3-line, alternate red and bright blue with penwork designs of the other color extending along margin., Purchased from Enzo Ferrajoli through Nicolas Rauch of Geneva in 1958 by L.
