"Pushed by Knighton and pulled by Lady Conyngham, George IV, more corpulent than in other prints, walks in an ornate circular stand or support on castors (as used for toddling children, cf. British Museum satires no. 7497) towards Virginia Water (right), his fishing-rod against his shoulder. He wears a hat with a wide curving brim inscribed á la Townsend [cf. British Museum satires no. 10293], double-breasted tail-coat, breeches, and pumps; his right arm rests on the ring of the stand, in his hand is a small book: Old Izack [Walton]. From the stand dangles an ornate reticule: Fish Bag; the base is decorated with two fat squatting mandarins. Lady Conyngham looks over her right shoulder at the King, puffing from her effort, but singing Rule Britannia; the crossbar at which she tugs is a sceptre. She wears an enormous ribbon-trimmed bonnet and décolletée dress; the hook from the King's line has caught in her dress which strains across her vast posterior as she leans forward. Knighton wears a court-suit with bag-wig and sword. He pushes with both hands with great concentration, singing, Send him Victorious. In his coat-pocket are a clyster-pipe and a paper: Petition of the Unborn Babes. A signpost terminating in a realistic hand points To Virginia Water. "George IV as the 'Great Babe' lies asleep in his cradle rocked by Lady Conyngham, while Wellington, seated before a pier-glass, places the crown on his own head. The glass reflects the dark emaciated features of British Museum Satires No. 15520. The Duke wears a uniform with boots and sword. On a table below the glass the sceptre and orb lie on a cushion. Lady Conyngham, with a towering coiffure as in British Museum Satires No. 15508, croons: Oh slumber my darling | The time may soon come | When thy rest may be broken | By Trumpet & Drum [the last three words in large letters]. The infant sucks a thumb; a gouty foot projects from the coverlet. On the floor is a line of toys: a sailing boat on wheels, a model of Buckingham Palace reconstructed by Nash as in British Museum Satires No. 15668, a giraffe (see British Museum Satires No. 15425), a Life Guard on a toy horse, a Foot-Guard, a dismantled or unfinished ship resting on a prostrate toy soldier. "Probably based on G. Cruikshank's 'Boney's Meditations . . .', British Museum Satires No. 12593 (1815), an adaptation of Gillray's 'Gloria Mundi', British Museum Satires No. 6012. The place of Napoleon is taken by George IV (right) who stands on the globe, staggering back from the rays of the sun which contains (in place of his own head) a bust portrait of the Queen (left). He repeats a parody of Milton's lines from 'Paradise Lost': "--To Thee, To Thee, I call!!! but with no friendly Voice & add thy Name oh Queen!! To tell thee how I hate those beams that bring to my Rememberance from what state I'm fallen." On the globe is a map with lines of latitude and longitude; the King's left foot is on a frontier between 'England' and 'Hanover' (towards which he staggers), as if to suggest that he will retire to Germany, cf. British Museum Satires No. 13974. A cherub flies above the Queen holding up a ribbon inscribed 'Innocent', and frowning down at the King. "George IV drives Lady Conyngham in a four-wheeled pony-chaise. He is chubbily obese, in loose trousers and braided jacket, wearing a cap poised on his naturalistic curls (cf. British Museum Satires no. 14637). He turns to the enormously corpulent lady. Both overweight the little chaise, and the very small ponies strain desperately. Behind and on the extreme left is the head of the horse ridden by an attendant. They have just passed a gate with a small octagonal lodge. "George IV sits in an arm-chair, his gouty right leg in a bulky swathing rests on a cushion; the left leg is tightly bound between calf and ankle with a narrow bandage. He wears a loose fur-collared coat or gown over breeches and waistcoat. He leans back reflectively, an open book, Diversions of Purley [by Home Tooke, cf. British Museum Satires No. 9020], in his right hand. Phases of his past life are illustrated in a series of W.L. portraits on the wall behind him. [1] As a handsome young man he stands holding a long-bow, as if at an archery contest. [2] He stands, slightly obese, in his Light Horse uniform, see British Museum Satires No. 8800 (1796). [3] He stands in back view as in BM Satires 12803, facing a wall on which is a portrait of the Hottentot Venus [Saartjie Baartman], see British Museum Satires No. 11577, &c. [4] He stands in hussar uniform, with high curled wig and whiskers. [5] He stands directed to the right in Field Marshal's uniform (as 'especially in 1814). [6] He stands on the deck of a ship in yachting costume wearing loose jacket and trousers, his hands in his coat-pocket. The profile and paunch of Sir William Curtis are behind and on the extreme left. [7] The picture is partly concealed by a curtain, but the King sits near a chamber-pot. [8] He stands in coronation robes holding orb and sceptre (see British Museum Satires No. 14199). [9] He is in Highland costume (see British Museum Satires No. 14386). At the King's left hand is a small cheval-glass topped by a crown. His appearance has changed, he has no whiskers, and has a wig of lightly curled natural hair, parted in the middle, so that in place of the pear- or pineapple-shaped head resulting from a crest of curls and whiskers, as from c. 1811 [In caricature. An engraved H.L. portrait by Schiavonetti after T. Phillips, pub. Cadell & Davis, 11 Oct. 1809, has whiskers and crest of curls], his face seems rounder, and, in many prints, younger. "The Regent, seated sideways on his chair, is in back view, holding out his hand in an oratorical gesture towards a ragged and despairing John Bull, who stands hat in hand addressing him. He says: "Why you unatural Grumbler after I have done all I could to get rid of your Money you Still grumble did I not give you a Fète did I not Build you a Bridge did I not Treat you with a Smell of all the nice things at my Feast did I not sign the Corn Bill did I not refuse the [scored through] your Address have I not drank whole Pipes of Wine for fear it should be waste'd have I not spent all your money because you should not spend it your self have you not got the Income Tax to keep you sober, & as for your Dress the Thinner the better for the Sumer Season so Johnny go Home to work its all for the good of your Country." The Regent wears a powdered wig and whiskers, a tight-waisted coat with small pointed tails over very tight breeches, sleeves puffed at the shoulders. John has no coat, wears a tattered waistcoat, shirt, and breeches, has one ragged stocking with a pad over the knee, and one bare leg covered with a twisted straw rope, with dilapidated shoes, thus resembling a destitute day labourer instead of a 'cit' or farmer. Viewed from the back. Lady Conyngham, immensely fat, and her size increased by inflated sleeves and skirt. The King advances from the right and takes her right hand. The back of her head is covered by a large '5s.' piece, showing the reverse or "tail", with St. George and the 'Honi Soit' ... inscription. The King's face is covered with a sovereign, showing the obverse, with his own head, the profile towards the lady, and 'Georgius IV'... inscription. She wears an enormous high-crowned hat trimmed with loops of ribbon, the brim extending beyond her vast shoulders. He wears a top-hat and braided coat with fur collar, the ribbon of the Garter, and the Golden Fleece, with knee-breeches. Above the design: 'If thou be a King, where is thy Crown! "George IV, as Falstaff, sits in a high-backed chair with a grotesquely fat Doll Tearsheet (Lady Conyngham) on his knee. He holds a large glass of wine and looks at her with appraising melancholy. She pouts her lips to kiss. Their words are engraved below: Falstaff--hou dost give me flattering busses. Doll Nay, truly; I kiss thee with a constant heart. Fal-I am old, I am old. Doll-I love thee better than I love e'er a scurvy young boy of them all. --vide Shakspeare ['II Henry IV, II. iv.] Behind (right) stands Bardolph, with the head and nose of Curtis, talking to a lean Mrs. Quickly, who has the unmistakable profile of Lord Conyngham, behind whom a huge antlered stag's head looks down from the wall. Both women wear steeple-crowned hats, but the dress of one is flamboyant and ornate, of the other demure. A man looks in cautiously from the doorway.
